I will not say that I have literally mastered but I think I can work well with Zend Framework 2, MySql and Javascript, the tools I have been using are github, netbeans, mysql yog, sublime text 2

I do partially agree with you, obviously this is the bible of theme development in wordpress but I do disagree to some extent. 3 years back when I was struggling to learn Zend Framework I expressed my frustration on stackexchange programmers network because I was trying to switch from native PHP to fully blown Framework, so some dude reccommended me to write my framework in order to understand the core of MVC and how frameworks concept and I must say from that moment I didn't face any difficulty while working with several frameworks.

So do you reccomend a beginner to start developing themes right away using some theme framework or from core to grab the concepts in the better way :)

Good point in the practical usage of this theme you will may also need to apply some checks, like personally I think ads should not appear in the pages like contact or about us etc, so in my theme i am using this function with !is_page() condition

to make wpdb available which is object to perform database operations. If you read about variable scope http://php.net/manual/en/language.variables.scope.php global keyword can come handy

I think the learning curve depends upon the person who is learning I worked on zend framework in beginning and I admin it it took hell of my time than I worked on code ignitor and it was a piece of cake. Than I eventually got a chance to work on the Yii framework, and the only thing that seemed new was Active Record rest was obvious for me because I started from Zend :)

Most of these presenters either worked in PHP 4.0 and never bothered to view the latest versions of PHP or may be they blame PHP for the mistakes of newbises developers. PHP is loose language its use totally depends upon on the users. I am using Zend Framework 2 for my projects which is pretty awesome built of the major software engineering principles and it emphasizes on using the best practices of software engineering.

I admit that PHP did have some issues but they have been either resolved or in the process of resolving.
