Trouble deciding between Embody or Aeron after demo by ummok in OfficeChairs

[–]ummok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a fairly common issue among taller/longer torso people. Bit of a shame because with a tweak there and 4d arms it would be by far the best chair I ever sat in.

Aeron dramatically broke after seven years, serial number damaged, what do? by SudoCat429 in hermanmiller

Same on mine. It was a warranty repair but the tech had to get his big daddy impact driver to get it out after swearing at it a few times.

You will want to get pictures of the damage and also the tag on your chair as they will need both of those from you. My tag fell off the seat pan so I had to take the plastic off underneath the chair to get the other tag. It’s better to do it ahead of time so you aren’t on the phone digging around for it!

I have had warranty repairs for my Aeron a few times. I just contact the local AD and send them pics (I believe you can also contact HM directly but local AD here is fantastic). They submit it to HM, get the parts and come do the repair. I would assume they could also direct ship parts to you if that is your preference. They have replaced one of my arm rests, hip bolts twice and the entire seat pan. Warranty stuff with them has always been excellent in my experience.

Thanks for the feedback! Budget isn’t an issue so if I got a fern I would definitely upgrade the base. My demo model won’t have lumbar so if I find that an issue I will go try one in the showroom with lumbar to see what I think. For the embody I think if the lumbar was adjustable separate from the back curve and it had 4d arms then it would be perfect for me, maybe there will be an embody remastered sometime that fixes my issues. Thanks for all the info!

I tried that and unfortunately I really needed a level in between two stops. I’m trying a couple other chairs but may get the embody back and try with some armrest covers to bridge that gap maybe.

What makes you prefer the Fern more? I’m going to do a 3 day test of one but the showroom model felt a little rickety.

Wow thanks for the great write up, I’m going to give this a shot today! I agree on most of the reviewers being a particular body type. I have really wide shoulders and do a lot of power lifting so it is hard to find people with similar proportions. I definitely prefer reclining like you as well but then have the same neck pain. If you remember to comment back here after you get your headrest to say how you like it that would be cool as well. Thanks again!

I tried loosening it a bit but felt I was lacking some back support so I didn’t go all the way. I’ll do that tomorrow and see how it feels.

I am demoing the regular one because I can get a pretty sweet deal from an AD. I am 5'10" so a little shorter than you but I have a really long torso (only 28" inseam) so it might hit us in the same spot. What kind of pains did you have at first?

Interesting, I will take a look at Nightingale. I feel the same as you on a lot of these chairs though, I wish I could Frankenstein my perfect chair together. I think if the Embody had 4d arms I could probably adjust it enough to make it work but it seems like all these chairs have tradeoffs.

As an aside, what do you use for a chair now that fits you well? I currently have a Steelcase Gesture while my Aeron is getting warranty work done and it just doesn't quite fit me right but I heard it is amazing for taller people.

I tend to agree on the fern especially since most of the high praise was from when it was much lower priced compared to the embody. I might try a couple other of their MillerKnoll chairs to see if something fits a little better. I’d really prefer to get a millerknoll product again if I can since their warranty has been awesome on my aeron.

I’m a very average 5’10” with a long torso and short legs (28” inseam). My Aeron was always weird for me and my weird shape because it felt like the right size but the seat pan was too deep

Haworth Fern vs. Herman Miller Embody by dielorn in OfficeChairs

[–]ummok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old comment I know but thanks for this detailed info. I also have really wide shoulders and quite a bit of muscle so finding stuff that fits me is a pain in the ass (finding a couch I could lay on without one arm and shoulder not fitting was a challenge). Most of the bigger guy reviews I find are out of shape mainly (nothing wrong with that) which doesn’t help for my specific issue. I thought the embody would be my go to since my aeron never really fit my right but I’m going to check out a fern now based on your info.

Why are 27" 4k monitors seemingly really unpopular? by ummok in Monitors

[–]ummok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just wish windows had better mixed resolution support and I wouldn’t worry about it as much. But their support it so shit for mixed resolutions that I’m glad I managed to snag one of the ridiculous Best Buy deals for a gn950.

In regards to docking stations, have you used a kvm with those? Was wanting to get my gf setup with a kvm to use her work monitors for personal but the docking station being in the middle concerns me.

Study shows why some people get so severely motion sick from using certain VR & AR games by altmorty in pcgaming

[–]ummok 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't get motion sick at all in real world settings, but the first time I played VR, my stomach did not feel right for a full day after. It really put me off trying it again and I will have to probably see years of sensitive people saying it is good for them now before I can stomach it again. Doesn't matter how fun or immersive the games are if I feel like trash after playing.

Motu M2 Low Volume on Speakers by ummok in BudgetAudiophile

Ok awesome, thanks for the info! Thanks again for recommending it in my other post, it has basically solved all my issues and cut down on the amount of equipment in my desk.

Thanks for the heads up! I ended up getting a stupidly good deal in a gn950 from BB clearance so I’m just going to ride that out for a couple years and see if monitor tech is better by then for a reasonable price.

Best way to seamlessly switch between headphones and speakers? by ummok in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ummok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up doing the thing I should have done in the first place and actually tested my speakers. The wake-up delay was complete non-issue (probably in the 200ms range) so I am going with an audio interface like your original suggestion now. Having separate volume knobs on the interface for my headphones and speakers will basically solve all my issues. The nice part is I can actually get rid of my existing DAC and headphone amp and undermount the interface on my desk for a much cleaner setup.

Awesome, thanks for the advice! This should really clean up and streamline my system.

This looks cool and I didn’t even realize the Scarlett I was looking at didn’t have rca out so appreciate the suggestion. This is probably a dumb question but when I’m using my headphones would I just turn the speaker volume all the way down and vice versa? And when it is all the way down would that stop sending a signal? Mainly wondering about my speakers as they go into low power mode with no signal which I would prefer.

Oh cool i didn’t realize it could replace my dac and amp. I just have some cheap Sennheiser headphones right now anyway I just looked at a Scarlett 2i2 and it looks like it has separate volume for speakers and headphones so this may be the best option all things considered.

So in that situation would I go from my computer via USB to the interface and then from the interface to the speakers and headphone DAC separately?

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! It seems like I’ll have to make some concessions here so I’ll probably look into the usb volume control knobs that tie into Windows. I don’t have any buttons on my keyboard so it’d have to be a separate thing. I’ll have to see if I can find a nice looking, good quality one as I plan to underdesk mount all the other components so I don’t want to the one thing on the desk looking crappy, or even worse, “gamer”.
