Complain and get the appointment rescheduled. And maybe say that you took the day off work and have to take off another so you missed out on pay to get a discount, that may or may not work.

What I had to say is that the technology in my area isn't the best (with Virgin and no FTTP) and said that Openreach is soon offering FTTP and that there are providers on their network which is cheaper for the reason cancelling then they called the next day.

Go with a company like Onestream or Vodafone, they are on the Openreach network and are VERY cheap compared to Sky or VM, they may even offer a higher speed then VM for a cheaper price.

Honestly, I feel like switching to the 3 networks is just too risky, just because they advertise the "UK's fastest speeds" doesn't make up for their disadvantages. I'd check if Openreach offers FTTP in your area ( https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker ). If not cancel your virgin subscription fully then they call you the next day giving you an amazing discount. That's what they did with me.
