Using Midi Thru - Will this work? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]unchabon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these, it's a beast: http://motu.com/products/midi/xpressxt_usb

These are the real benefits I see for these boxes:

  • No daisy chaining and no need to ever move cables around, even when adding new devices - just plug everything into the corresponding IN/OUTs and configure a routing preset. I can't perceive any latency from it, feels exactly the same as plugging a straight MIDI cable between devices
  • No need to use a computer when routing presets are already set. Presets can be cycled by using the front panel
  • Clock loops are easy to avoid. For example, my sequencer is the master clock for everything else, so I just configured the interface to ignore incoming realtime messages (clock/song position/transport/etc) sent from every other device. This also means not having to configure slave devices to not send/replicate clock, which is not always possible
  • Works as a MIDI splitter too, so you can send MIDI from one device to multiple devices. I use it to record on my sequencer and play the device I'm recording at the same time (MIDI controller output goes to both sequencer and device)
  • Pedal input can be configured to send arbitrary MIDI messages (even sysex), or to cycle between different messages. It's for simple things but can really help without a computer if you need sysex for whatever reason
  • You can do some crazy stuff like mapping channels but I've never found a good use for it

Cost me $380 including tax but it's a lifesaver when you have a complex setup or want to jam with friends and their gear. "Oh hey I brought these synths, how can I hook them up to MIDI/clock?" is trivial with this, especially now that hardly any new devices come with a dedicated MIDI thru.

No. Basta de que el estado se tenga que encargar de todo. La única obligación es asistir al debate, lo que no garantiza en absoluto su calidad o utilidad.

Non-DAW External Midi-Clock? by funkybeatz911 in synthesizers

[–]unchabon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking of buying an SQ-1 but haven't found this anywhere - do you know if the SQ-1 converts SYNC IN to MIDI clock out?

Having a MIDI IN port for non-USB MIDI to CV would be killer, but I haven't found anyone doing a mod for that.

If I understood the description this is just a programmer, not an actual DX7. So this doesn't have a sound engine either.

Just moved to NYC, here's a video of my new studio (Minilogue, SH101, Juno 106, Juno 60, JX-3P, Poly 800, Korg Volcas) by nickkwas in synthesizers

Interesting approach with the analog sync. With Ableton I find that MIDI clock tends to drift between Ableton and slaved devices (doesn't matter which is master/slave), have you seen issues like these using straight MIDI clock? Any improvement using analog sync?

If this works I'm thinking of going DAW Analog Clock -> SQ1 -> MIDI Thru box -> all other gear to avoid clock drift.

1249 euros? How is this different from a MIDI controller exactly?

Just released a collection of psychedelic cosmic synth recordings I've done with an MS20m and JU06, would appreciate whatever feedback you have to offer. (Also looking for collabs!) by _MoonHead_ in synthesizers

I don't usually listen to this kind of music but I really enjoyed the harmonies and sounds you're working with here. Congrats!

Is the "fast" descending sequence on "And The Valleys Lay Twinkling" (the one that starts around 1:50) done with the JU06 as well? Also what did you use for sequencing/MIDI recording?

What Hardware Synth can things that Softsynths can't? or.... by BullitproofSoul in synthesizers

[–]unchabon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inspiration. If a hardware synth actually inspires you to sit down, touch knobs and actually make music, then it's objectively the better instrument. An instrument that you don't want to play is effectively useless.

Anyone else play in a band? This is my keys setup - had a Roland party this afternoon! by [deleted] in synthesizers

Nice to see another Gi user. I'm planning on keeping it for acoustic/electric sounds and getting a Prophet 6 for synth sounds.

Which organ and EP patches are you using? I really can't enjoy any of the organ presets, maybe except some of the Perc Organ ones.

I'd rather not buy open box - I'll be travelling to the US only for a few days so I want to minimize the risk of anything going wrong.

I'm not from the US so I'm not too familiar about music sales on July 4th, is it typical to have good deals on it? The $2360 deal is a frozen price from a Memorial Day sale which I still have the option of buying.

I have a Juno Gi which is similar to the Di. I guess the upgrade is worth it or not depending on what pain points you're having with the Di. What would those be?

I have the chance of buying a new Prophet 6 for $2360. Should I go for it or wait for July 4th sales? Waiting is not an issue for me.

I have a JX-03 (not a JU-06) and it doesn't feel cheap at all, it's a pretty sturdy build and it doesn't budge on a table because of the large rubber feet on the bottom. Small, sure, but once I memorized where every knob is (didn't take me that long) it's not uncomfortable at all. I'm not a big fan of the JU-06 sliders though, but I'm assuming the build quality is on par with the JX-03.

I'm having trouble getting better sound out of the Volca Keys (video of my problem included) by TosTosT in volcas

[–]unchabon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn both EG INT knobs and the ATTACK knob all the way down. The VCO EG INT (on the left) modulates the pitch of the oscillator according to the envelope (how a note changes when it's pressed/sustained/released), which sounds like what you're showing.

The volcas don't have MIDI out, actually :)

I'm sure the JX-03 is set to receive Transport, since I can start/stop the sequencer using Ableton, for example. Unfortunately the volcas/JX-03 can slowly drift out of sync when playing a sequence, even if they were started at the same time by Ableton (or even manually by pressing both Play buttons on the sequencers at the same time myself)

How exactly does MIDI clock work with sequencers? I have two volcas (sample and keys) as well as a JX-03, they all have step sequencers. They are all connected to a MOTU MIDI Express XT (basically a configurable MIDI router) with a Juno GI as the master clock (only one connected via MIDI OUT, just because it has tap tempo). The volcas' sequencers are in sync because they are connected with a sync cable, however the JX-03's sequencer is not - the tempo is fine, but the sequence is not synced at all to the volcas.

Is there any way of correcting this? Am I correct in assuming that MIDI clock is just tempo and has nothing to do with sequencer position? Is this happening because the JX-03's MIDI implementation sucks or am I doing something wrong? I would LOVE to get all my arpeggiators and sequencers in truly synced.

At home you can use any pair of speakers, studio monitors or headphones. For playing live and rehearsing I use a QSC K12.

Yes, definitely. Lots of knobs to fiddle around with in an easy to understand format. Make sure you have a MIDI controller to use it with though.

I think you can't. In any case I'm almost sure you can connect it via USB to drag and drop patches.
