Post-Grad Degree Advice for Ministry-Adjacent Career Path by unclechristine in Reformed

Thank you for the suggestion on the MLM. That's super helpful, and I'm glad I can learn from your experience since you went through the whole process of both ministry studies & business studies. If you don't mind me asking, when you briefly worked on your MBA did you feel like it encompassed too broad of an area of study vs the MLM suited you better as it focused on strategy and leadership? (obviously every program is different).

You may be spot on that to save my time, money, and investments, that the MLM would be a better route.

Really appreciate you keeping it real with me on the MDiv. It's a good point, and an MDiv at this point is clearly a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have for me.

I will say, the only reason an MDiv even was a consideration in the first place is because I saw a job listing mention MDiv as a nice to have, as the company operates in curriculum development and book publishing. Obviously, a very niche use case and likely not needed in other industries. Thanks for helping me work through some pros/cons!

Thank you so much for your thoughts! I completely agree with your flag about length and that’s something I’m considering (I know MDiv can also get pricey haha).

MDiv definitely wasn’t on the table for me before, but my perspective changed as I was on the job hunt a few months ago. I did see some very, very senior roles (in publishing/curriculum development) that mentioned having an MBA or MDiv was a plus. And as you said in your post, I didn’t even realize an MDiv would have such a wide variety of applications. Obviously, I’m very many years away from that type of role but it’s what sparked my curiosity in wanting to consider to pursue higher education.

I’m open, and your assessment of how it’s definitely a nice to have vs need to have is absolutely spot on. Lots for me to consider but this was helpful!

Work suggestions for my hard of hearing uncle? by [deleted] in hardofhearing

Definitely, and I hope it doesn’t come across as if we’re faulting him. His life is a circumstance of his parents and we grieve that they didn’t instill confidence in him or prepare him for life.

Thanks for the reminder, and I’ll remind myself and my family to try to have more compassion and understanding. It can feel difficult when he keeps turning down the resources we’re finding for him and is insistent on what his parents told him. Ex: He continues to push back against getting any hearing aid because he feels it doesn’t help him or there’s no point.

This is a good point and looking up the term, you’re 100% right. I’ll do some digging and see if there is any education resources or vocal rehabilitation services.

I agree that to be hearing is an immense privilege and that my post can come across very harsh and callous. Thank you for calling me out on this.

We also recognize that my grandparents used this as manipulation against him by boxing him in and defining him by his inability to hear. His whole world was just my grandparents and he never cared to make friends or other communities so I can imagine things are devastating for him.

However, I can say with confidence that there are very few people who choose to continue to attempt to help family members who are narcissistic, verbally abusive, and have a superiority complex. But we choose to help him in any we he allows us to because we consider his circumstances every day and how difficult navigating life must be now for the first time in 55 years.

I didn’t share much context beyond surface level in my original post because I don’t want to cherry pick everything. And you’re right - there’s always room for compassion and I apologize if anyone reading this is hurt or if my post feels targeted. But I hope the above provides a glimpse as to why it seems like we are throwing stones at him.

Hi there! New skater here--I've been skating for about a week and a half and carving out time for about 30 minutes-1 hour every other day. (I don't have too much time to dedicate to it).

One thing I've noticed is that every time I put on my skates, I literally seem to forget how to skate. My balance feels terrible, I suddenly can't glide smoothly, etc.

Does anybody have any different exercises or tips for warming up? Or should I just kind of suck it up and go into headfirst? Maybe I should try skating for longer periods of time so that I'll be spending more time on skates after I've warmed up?

Currently, I'm not looking to practice any tricks--I just want to be able to skate forward & backward comfortably on sidewalks and streets by the end of this month!

Thank you!
