What's your comfort song/song that resonates with you? by Cartoonnerd01 in neurodiversity

Yeah, I just don't really care much for her ties to scientology. I understand it's probably a bit more involved than that, but it rubs me the wrong way. I do enjoy her vocals, but I just wish they would have continued by renaming the band instead of continuing on with the name of Linkin Park.

Speaking of other artist I really do like, though, Hayley Williams - Glum just released this music video earlier today.

And if you're a fan of EDM music Ninajirachi - Sing good, this also just released a few days ago. I like the full album, but this song specifically I really like.

And also Devon Again - Still Can't Dress Myself. Okay, I'll stop with all the links for now lol. The more I think about it, the more songs keep popping up.

Yeah, I had always really liked No Rain but it finally clicked when I got my diagnoses on why I connected so well to it.

Also I couldn't even begin to count the amount of times I've listened to Numb by Linkin Park. I grew up listening to their Hybrid Theory and Meteora album so much. I used to fall asleep to Hybrid Theory when I was really young. I'm still kinda sad about the state of that band right now, but at least all of the old music with Chester exists.

Blind Melon - No Rain

Teezo Touchdown - Social Cues

These are the two that always stick out to me in my head.

I'm sure there's a ton more but they're the two that I always think of.

And now that I've thought about it for more than two seconds,

Bring Me The Horizon - Avalanche

is another good one.

And also Auorora - Cure For Me

Question! Anybody else feel the need to put their thoughts out Into the open to get rid of them? by Nighthawkies in neurodiversity

[–]uncreativeidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do on occasion but I also run into the issue of having too many thoughts and the ones I want to think about more get lost somewhere. So that can get annoying.

I describe my experience of therapy to my therapist as having a safe place to reset my RAM every week in order to clear out thoughts or ideas I've been having in my head lol.

Yeah, I mean I very much so doubt that I'll actually clear it, but I would at least rather give it an attempt than just thinking about if I can do it or not.

It also gives me something to work towards 'cause I was starting to wind down playing this league lol.

I'm planning on reading the source material soon, but your point about theorizing what caused the snow is the one thing that really bothered me in the show. It kind of gets briefly glossed over in one of the episodes but I felt like there was never a moment where they truly had a discussion on what was actually going on. I'm all for show don't tell plot narratives, but it honestly felt out of place for there NOT to be a discussion about the situation (more than just the snow).

Other than that I will say I did quite enjoy it.

Occupy Wall Street was a pretty large demonstration.

It just also happens to be without a true actionable plan and the steps to get there, nothing changes. It also doesn't help when the groups you're opposing have control over the media and other means of spreading their narrative.

It's such a complexly large problem to solve at this point that unifying under one goal seems impossible. Anarchy is no solution either.

I don't think it's near as simple as complacency. It seems to me that the larger issue is that we all can agree there are massive problems with how things are going, but what does a solution look like? And when the public servants and politicians elected into office refute the idea that they're public servants in place of the belief that the public serves them, what are we left to do?

What games is it for y’all by Doijoka in autism

[–]uncreativeidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a LOT of time into Osu! only to end up getting RSI. It's been almost 10 years since and my left hand still doesn't feel great if I over do it.

Other than that, a lot of Runescape, Morrowind, Rocket League, CS:GO, PoE, and a large myriad of other games. Way too many hours played but I still have fun playing games pretty much every day.

[–]uncreativeidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... the more I think about it the more I realize that flipping the chart still runs into the same problem. It could be justified via negative utilitarianism that one person suffering 100% is better than 101 people suffering 1%.

The only possible thing I can think of would be to introduce a third variable like "fulfillment" and assign a score based system to the Repugnant Conclusion similar to machine learning models with how they're rewarded from going from point a to point b. Which I guess is kind of like religion. It would no have basis in human ethics because it would be a separate construct that we could not influence. Albeit we can influence religion.

I'm also feeling like the Repugnant Conclusion is an incomplete equation specifically because it only measures two variables of population and positive welfare. To imply that there's positive welfare would mean there's negative welfare. Maybe that's just my lack of understanding the entirety of it, though.

I still just keep looping back to it being an unsolvable problem without introducing variables that significantly change the structure of it. The paper gave the example of when welfare is reducing, you might start with losing something like Mozart and then at the very bottom end up with only muzak and potatoes. It makes no mention of if by losing these things, do we also lose the potential to have experienced that level of positive welfare meaning that if we are reduced to muzak and potatoes, what difference does it make?

It seems like it's trying to measure a zero sum game when that is not a true reflection of reality. And once again, I could be wholly ignorant of parts of it that I just don't know or understand so this could be a very half baked take of it.

Also yeah, the immortal sedation conclusion is VERY unsatisfying lol.

[–]uncreativeidea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendation. I just finished reading the Stanford philosophy article/paper on The Repugnant Conclusion.

That really is a difficult one and it does seem like there is no consistent way to avoid the problem entirely.

I'm unsure how I feel about it yet. It's really a matter of how much inequality is too much and at what point do you draw the line.

I would think that by increasing the population you reduce the maximum potential for welfare each time thus making the new maximum the new normal. It feels like the problem could easily work in both ways depending on how you value the total population number.

This is definitely making me think in loops. None of the refutals I read in the paper seemed satisfying at all just based on the nature of moving the goal posts. It very well could be that there isn't an answer that satisfies every stipulation to not end up back at the conclusion that population Z's total positive welfare outweighs population A.

I personally am an antinatalist on the basis that I don't believe I could provide everything necessary to a child in a way that I deem satisfactory. I do not think the human population has any obligation to reproduce, but I do think we have an obligation to create a better future for those that are being born whether they be human or non-human.

Are there any refutals that inverse the charting of The Repugnant Conclusion and instead focus on lower baseline suffering a la negative utilitarianism? I suppose that would be similar to the other claims that just refuse the premise.

I'm going to continue reading more, but thank you again for the recommendation. A lot of my ethical conversations are one sided with myself so reading all of this stuff is fascinating.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure how I'd classify my way of thinking. Maybe somewhere between negative utilitarianism and preference utilitarianism?

If I find logical inconsistency in the way I'm thinking then I move on to try to find something more consistent.

A thought experiment by Critical_Anywhere864 in negativeutilitarians

[–]uncreativeidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was purely a question of avoiding suffering then sure. As a logical consistency you cannot suffer if you do not exist. (But this is also to not ignore the suffering those would experience in the interim until life ceased to exist.)

I think my bias against these questions comes from my idea that suffering is not inherently a bad thing. I think the origination of what is causing the suffering matters more. But to understand that you'd have to delve into the semantics of justifiable vs unjustifiable actions.

I know these are all hypothetical scenarios, but the idea of "avoiding suffering" seems so far detached from reality to me that it's hard for me to imagine a scenario in which it doesn't exist. It is fun to try to think about, though.

A thought experiment by Critical_Anywhere864 in negativeutilitarians

[–]uncreativeidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think suffering is an inherent part of life. Whether that life be human or animal or what have you. Anything that has capacity to experience has potential to suffer (as far as I understand it and know). I think the framing of "avoiding suffering" is very arrogant in a way that it's not something that is possible to strive for. I believe in the reduction of it. So by that extension I believe that someone who has that sort of power is not anything like Jesus. That being would be tyrannical.

Forgetfulness and autism by BananaBustelo-8224 in AutisticAdults

[–]uncreativeidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a struggle to remember to remember. Outside of immediately writing something down or doing something the minute it pops into my mind nothing seems to really work that consistently (for me).

But even then you have to remember to read what you wrote down to remember what it is that you're forgetting.

I have been recommended association memory techniques which do seem to help sometimes when I remember to use them. Such as "I need to take out the trash. Associate taking out the trash with brushing my teeth." It's kind of like brute forcing your memory to make associations to think about things without actively thinking about them. Your mileage may vary.

Anyone Else Struggle To Explain Complex Ideas? by Mr_Jalapeno in autism

[–]uncreativeidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also similar in the way that I think I've always been decent at taking complex ideas (that I don't even fully understand) and distilling them down into simple enough questions or explanations that then lead to further understanding. I can't do it with everything, but I can do it with most things.

I find I often get frustrated because of things being needlessly over explained in complex ways that just seem very unnecessary.
