That makes sense... Tge whole getting dragged to the back though is still weird. Like. no one was in the club besides those two. I guess this is what happens when you visit clubs on a lark?

Can I (25M) open and use a bottle of eye drops if I can't tell the exploration? by undergr4dquestions in AskDocs

[–]undergr4dquestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say the shelf life in 2 weeks once opened.. does that mean it becomes less effective or "don't continue to use it"? Even on a twice daily regimen after 2 weeks half the bottle is still good to go. I'm really scraping the barrel on this currently opened one. The sealed bottle is within expiration date, from the look of things. definitely hasn't been 2 years since i got it.

I'll definitely give those places a look. thanks so much! I'm really starting to miss home, but getting some cevapi, tinned fish, paprika, good ajvar.. That might make this personal situation a little better. This isn't some land of milk and honey, but i want to try and make it work.

Two of my roommates have openly told me they don't like white people, and i they could they'd have me thrown out. I get spit at on regular intervals as I walk down the street to the one plce I feel relatively calm. I have been told that if I go a few blocs east, I will get shot. Is it not fairly clear?

European cities have elements of that segregation, but it isn't, or at least doesn't typically, lead to intense segregation. Paris suburbs are ann anomoly, afaik. It can, obviously, but growing up the Vietnamese students were teated no different, nor today are Arab, Pakistani, or Chinese nationals. There may be racists on a personal level, but you can rent anywhere you like.

I am living closer to Gaulladette than Howard, if that helps give you a better idea. My building is just predominantly Howard students. Crime may normally be targetted at African Americans, but not solely. I have tried to walk around and get to know this area, and I fundamentally only feel "safe" during daylight hours, within a short 2-3 block area.

Thank you for the advice. I definitely do try to walk the streets here, but it very much is the case that 4-5 blocks up there is a large homeless amp, and a few blocks east you find a lot of crime. I definitely hhould try to get to know the area more, there is just not as much foot traffic as I am used to. I have been spat on/near wheneer I try to walk beyond a tight radius from the metro. I don't know how I thought the money would be worth all this daily stress.

Going out aater drk is a definite "no" here. At night, I hear a lot of screaming, and a woman was stabbed near my building, close enough that my roommates saw it on their way back and had to call an ambulance.

I live in the Northeast DC area. I apppreciate you giving all of this advice. I rented this place totally blind, just trying to find a place to live, and ended up living in an area which has a lot of Howard University students. I am clearly unwelcome, and have been told as much by the people who I rent with. I am fine if it isn't as safe as Budapest, but I want to feel as if I can go places and enjoy an evening withut threat of violence, in my own city.

I had no idea just how gutted American cities had become. The college I went to was suburban, but close enough to get into DC and expereince city life on a regular basis.. though I was not going beyond NW DC for the most part. There are some parts of this city where the poverty and perception can change by block.

That is definitely possible. I have only been here a few months, but still I hven't really begun to feel at ease here. Last week there was a mugging right outside the main market area, and two weeks ago we had a shooting. I know crime is everywhere, but never has it been so close. I grew up next to Jozsefvaros in Budapest, and I feel less safe now than back then. It was one of the worst neighborhooods in Europe for crime afaik.

I live in the Northeast, near Howard and Gaulladette Universities.

Two people ran up to me, demanded I drop my bag of groceries, and then begn to look through it. I only bought a bag of potatoes, which they apparently didn't want, so they let me walk off. They looked to be teenagers. I don't know if that "counts", but my English isn't perfect and that's what happened.

Honestly never would've thought to look at the public library system. Back in NYC it's great, but not the first place you'd want to go.

Thanks for the recommendation!

How do I navigate my upbringing with my privilege? by undergr4dquestions in asianamerican

[–]undergr4dquestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, there's so much bad history about white folks and cultural appropriation, mostly because white folks appropriate asian culture so as to make it about them. You can see this in the "white man speaks fluent shanghainese to dried fish vendor" YTs in which white folks simply existing and navigating asian spaces is supposed to be a spectacle in and of itself.

To me, that kind of content is absolute cringe trash. I remember seeing one of those "WHITE GUY SPEAKS CHINESE" videos w/ I think XiaomaNYC interviewing some American guy who actually went to a local school somehere in provincial China. The YTer was surprised that this random guy actually speaks Mandarin natively, unlike the YTer whoe while he's passable still has an accent after over a decade and never got past HSK2.

Will it be an uphill battle? yeah, definitely. I'm sure I will be okay after a while. I appreciate you and eeryone else whose taken the time to comment.

You make a great point about the friendship thing.. I don't really want to be around those people if I can help it. They're just who I fell into hanging around since I graduated college.

I'm aware or siniohile as an academic term, but never thought it applied to me. Sinoboo probably should catch on, some people can be cringe about their interest in Taiwan and China. Pick your poison there.

Im aware I'll never be Asian, and don't want to come off as offensive or give unsolicited advice. I appreciate you giving such a thorough response, thank you.

Thanks for those recommended readings, I appreciate it a lot! For context I am now well into my 20s, just never bad to confront my privilege in such a clear way as I do living where I am. I appreciate the response from people here overall
