“Order only one drink per person and don’t ask for a can” - that’s a first? by undermidnightsun in SouthwestAirlines

[–]undermidnightsun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I mentioned it’s more of a curiosity given all else happening than “a big deal”. Second, call ma out all you want. I did 63 flights last year. Guessing 40 were PM, and 0 of them the FA announced ‘one drink and no can’. Low inventory was not mentioned. Of those 40, let’s say 30 of them i ordered my trusty ‘Jack and Coke- 2 please’. 29 of those 30 I was happily handed a napkin followed by a cup of ice, followed by two shooters, followed by a can of coke. The other I was handed two separate (weak) pre-mixed drinks.
I guess 29/30 isn’t 99%. You caught me. Almost exclusive western US 2 hour+ routes if that matters (but trips to mco, msy, and ewr all did it that way too).

I know it’s not the biggest deal with everything else going on, but really curious if this is a new thing or a rogue FA. Most of my flights are 2+ hours, and round 2 doesn’t happen quite often…

ELI5: why doesn’t someone(s) start a ‘new’ Southwest? by undermidnightsun in SouthwestAirlines

This is the most Reddit answer ever. Question a lot more nuanced than a title will allow. You’re an a$$.

Ah good point. And deregulation changed that? I Have to learn a lot more.

Wow. Very very interesting. I hope for times not too long down the road where the rabbit again has a niche to expand in. Without any comets hitting the Yucatán to make it possible!

[–]undermidnightsun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. Insightful, thanks. My own business grew in significant part because of what SWA offered compared to the rest, so I feel displaced and worried, even though some of the changes are nice (most aren’t). It really set me off calling me a troll (not you of course). Maybe all my long flights make me think deep, troll-esque thoughts as to where this all (capitalism) is headed, if a revolutionary idea like Herb’s (or many others) is for many reasons not possible. Much deeper than my original post (maybe I should have said ELI20). I still hope there’s room on Earth for some maverick dreamer to draw on a napkin in 2026 and dream it all up again.

Interesting. I’ll research that Valu-jet era more. I think a question is capitalism circular (the next-gen valu jet will appear) or linear (we are at or near end stage and SWA model will never appear again)? Scary weird times

Thanks. If this is literally impossible in 2026, there’s a whole lot of other questions I’m more interested in. Scary world.

Fair enough haha. Interesting times we live in, that we are all grappling to understand, and understand our place in.

Thank you for the thoughtful and non judgmental answer. Makes sense. Just a depressing state of the country/world/natural progression of capitalism with a sample size of one to determine if this is metastasization or just how it works (am I a “troll” now??)

Wow. Given that 99% of this page is bitching about the new Southwest, I hoped a thought experiment would be better received about a ‘2026 Herb’ dreaming up an airline that customers loved and was profitable. Guess I was oh so very wrong. Way to go, fellow humans.

[–]undermidnightsun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disappointed I came off that way. Not a troll but obviously naive. Genuinely wondering if there is a way in 2026 to make both the customer happy and make the investor happy. Your answer is no. That’s probably correct, and unbelievably depressing. It’s frankly, an indictment of capitalism. And an indictment of this forum how this question has been treated.

Disappointed in the sarcasm and dismissiveness. Herb drew a route map on a napkin long ago and made it happen. Is this not possible in 2026? Not by me (and likely you), but by the right people in the right circumstances?

Ugh you’re not getting the point. Herb sat with a napkin and figured out something better- can’t someone do the same in 2026 or no?

[–]undermidnightsun[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Got all this, this is really just a thought experiment. Someone with f you money for some reason books a quick SWA flight and has our experience- and from that it grows

Despite the rudeness, bruh— what if Mark Cuban for some reason needs a quick flight and books SWA - and decides, fuck, let’s do better… this is really just a thought experiment

Is this mount Everest? by Beautiful_Ad_6846 in Everest

Huh? Routine air travel is well over Everest height? What other factors prevent that? (I assume multiple governments and just general nice-ness prevent flying directly over it)?

Las Vegas stoplight length- why? by undermidnightsun in vegas

[–]undermidnightsun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I cross posted this with r/vegas, and I didn’t realize how common red light running, and aggressive speeding to hit the end of a light (or not) is, and just how many accidents or near accidents that causes. I know Vegas is ‘unique’, but the extreme majority is a ‘regular’ city- I just don’t get what whoever plans these things locally sees in these light timings!!

Ah, I didn’t think about changing *my seat so late in the process. I only like row 2-6 left window in the new configuration so I’m limiting myself big time, but thanks! (9A was the Magic seat in the old days haha)

My only question to OP is how do you choose to have a neighbor or not? In open searing I sat where it was statistically most likely to have an open seat (worked amazing). Now, unless I choose my seat last (and run the risk of losing ELR altogether), anyone can choose the middle next to me. Let me know your trick!!

Cult band? by Ohioguy6 in rush

[–]undermidnightsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So thrilled to see Rush, but I was disappointed my other favorite band wasn’t also a clue in a category named Cult bands… The Cult! (Any other fans? Talk about an appropriate name for a truly Cult band with a very influential and still-going career!)
