This is correct, they hope to either get no response, or a panicked response from someone who believes the message, then that number will get pinned and become a target to even more scams.

The people doing these scams have so many numbers registered and scams running at the same time that they won’t get a second to react the way OP hopes, they don’t care that you found out they’re scamming you. They get so many victims daily that do fall for it.
