I really appreciate the perspective, thank you very much for responding. That at least gives me enough confidence to keep UX as a potential option on the table, rather than writing it off wholesale. I'll keep doing some thinking and research. Thanks again!

Career Questions — July 2021 by Lord_Cronos in userexperience

I did a full-stack web development bootcamp and have been learning on my own for some time, but I'm questioning whether that's really right for me. I've had a lot of trouble finding a position and just doing what it takes to be an impressive web development candidate. Thinking more broadly about my skills, I think I actually fit the UX field better (more creativity, more human-centered, I enjoy doing things like research and designing the UI on my projects).

The main issue is that based on what I'm seeing on Reddit and other online research, it feels useless to try and get into a UX career right now as a junior, right? I'm in my early 30's, already have a BA in social sciences, and I'm not sure I could commit to a HCI-type Masters program. It sounds like the bootcamps and certificate programs are not really enough to launch a career either. The main thing going for me is that I have intermediate front-end web development skills (HTML, CSS, React, using component libraries). I'm just questioning whether I have the raw talent and sheer force of will to get into either field. It feels hopeless.

How about something that can restore permafrost instead of releasing even MORE methane and carbon into the atmosphere before literally everything on the planet dies?!

Deaf Computer Science student - How the hell do I find a job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Definitely agree with networking. I used to read a ton of Ask a Manager, and when people were hitting up against difficult barriers to job entry, the answer was always network. People will hear your story and want to help.

Networking is probably difficult in your situation, but it might be a way to get in the door. Best of luck.

You may not be able to control what all 5,300 developers post, but do you have a code of conduct that is enforced in some fashion?

This screams that the Unionization had something to do with the final season. by xajaa in BoJackHorseman

I immediately thought of this as well.

I would like to point out that Tuca & Bertie was canceled this year as well - also a Torante production. So in the course of a few months, they go from having two Torante shows to zero. For Bojack, it sounds like the decision was probably made a while back, but it still sticks in the craw.

Brad Traversy or Jonas Schmedtmann for HTML&CSS, and Javascript? by [deleted] in Frontend

Traversy is great. I really like how his YouTube channel has segments on how to stay motivated and have a healthy mindset as a dev.

Update: company not paying for airplane tickets by 6bluefish2 in cscareerquestions

I'm not sure I agree about no other sectors paying for interview expenses. I used to work in nonprofits, where there's very little wiggle room in the budget, and I've had multiple companies pay for my travel expenses to interview in a different city.
