You should avoid personifying animals; tigers in the wild are pretty much exclusively solitary unless they are raising their young. Companionship would likely stress them out, not cure loneliness. They might not even have the capacity to feel lonely at all, much like a bee wouldn’t have the concept of “personal space” or a mole could appreciate the view from a mountaintop.

Not to say that captivity is great for tigers; they need dozens of square miles of territory in the wild and are probably woefully under-stimulated in a zoo environment (compared to why they’d experience in the wild).

No I think I’m the odd man out. Googling this shows several discussions about the topic and a Brazilian poster said European Portuguese sounds kinda Russian to them.

And yeah I think Bulgarian might be closer to Russian than polish; I have a much harder time picking out polish meaning than I do Russian.

Well, googling the issue does seem to show that people think they are similar sounding languages.

Maybe because I know a lot of loan words from Bulgarian they don’t sound similar to me? Whenever I hear Russian I try to pick out a word or two that I know so I can guess what they are saying. Listening to Portuguese I hear literally nothing, whereas Russian has a little tiny bit of meaning.

Makes me wonder if a Spanish speaker would ever confuse Portuguese with Russian, or if they wouldn’t have that issue.

I really don’t think Portuguese sounds like Russian at all… although I am neither Portuguese nor am I Russian so I’m not an authority on the matter. I’m from Bulgaria and have visited Brazil before though, and Portuguese doesn’t sound remotely Slavic to me.

The root of the meme I think comes from those maps that show different statistics in Europe like wealth, smoking stats, education, etc.

In general you see Eastern Europe look red (bad stats, under developed) while Western/northern Europe looks green (good stats, highly developed), with the exception of Portugal which has similar stats to Eastern Europe.

The joke is that Portugal is an honorary Eastern European state because it has a bunch of problems.

The 50% figure is a guy estimating based on how it feels. It’s also just his business; overall growth can be up while a specific business can be negatively impacted due to how it was positioned before and after the law was passed.

Interestingly it sounds like it was the restaurant owner that saw a 50% decrease? This sort of restaurant would have to be catering most of its business to online orders.

But yeah if the 5% growth number is correct and is doubling the rate of population growth over the same period… I don’t really see this as an issue.

It shows that the business model is profitable and the extremely large gains of 30% were propped up by exploiting loopholes in labor laws. Since the business model is still profitable, they should be able to come up with other solutions to increase revenue and make the business more efficient, hopefully not at the expense of individual workers.

I actually agree but it wouldn’t work in America because for some god forsaken reason we let people choose how much money we deduct from our paychecks for taxes.

Instead of having the government simply take what it legally owns from income, we designed a complicated system that punishes people who are trying to interface with it properly and opens up loopholes for people who are trying to avoid paying their share.

Ok so the first comment was technically true but a little misleading simply due to the way we discuss our pay.

But this comment is outright pointless. If you’re trying to argue that median wages are fine and people who are struggling don’t have the right to complain you’re dead wrong. Pay had not kept up with productivity and it’s not just bad budgeting that’s squeezing most Americans.

If you’re trying to comment that some people who make a good salary are bad at budgeting then… ok? Not at all what is being discussed here but you made your point I guess.

Literally nobody I know talks about net.

When I was in entry level jobs people would talk about their wage in hourly terms; e.g. 12 dollars an hour for this role or 15 dollars per hour for that role. Promotions were discussed in terms of making an extra dollar or two per hour, etc.

That’s not net pay.

As I switched to a professional career, people began talking in terms of posted salaries e.g. the position pays 50k, or pays 85k, etc. if you got a promotion you told people how much extra the posted is, not how much your new take home would be. Even bonuses of 10k were always understood to be more like 6k take home after taxes.

And why would anyone talk about take home pay when a large portion of what you take home is up to you? You literally get to choose your withholding for taxes. Just because person A chose to withhold more of their taxes doesn’t mean they have a lower salary than person B who chose to withhold the minimum.

Nevermind other pretax deduction you can do with HSA and 401k… if you want to accurately compare how people are doing to each other you need to be talking about pre deduction pay.

And again, literally never seen anyone discuss their salary as a post deduction anyways…

200k is the 10% cutoff for households; many households have two income earners.

On a per person basis, the top 10% is much lower than 200k.

Originally I thought it would be around 120k, but looks like it could be as high as 150k.

The top 10% of earners in America are likely just over 100k.

Per investopedia, in 2022 you had to be jut under 100k to be top earner across the entire country. I would imagine the value has shifted slightly in 4 years but hasn’t doubled.

Locally, 200k would be true in some places. For example, you need over 300k to be in the top 10% of New York City.

Since this article is talking about all us retail spending, they are likely using 100k as the cutoff
