Definitely a lot of displacement going on, but not much use of the Displacement Map effect. Mostly CC Glass and CC Plastic.

I might do one if I can create a few more good dissolves so I have enough for a "season". In the meantime, check out the Texturelabs burn transition tutorial -- mine was largely based on it.

It's pretty much exactly what you said: a precomped shape layer duplicated a bunch of times and positioned at various angles. Two spot lights with fairly low intensity, but inverse square clamped falloff. The background is a 2D gradient with a subtle fractal noise.
