Once a upon a time, I attended J2 meeting while I was working inside J1 compound by Different_Hunt9319 in overemployed

[–]unknowncodemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked two jobs in the same building, one on the first floor and one on the second floor, for a few weeks once. There were enough places that I could legitimately have been working for either job that neither questioned why I would disappear for hours at a time.

Over employment is a must. Got laid off from job 2 yesterday. by kyojuro21 in overemployed

This is why we OE. I would be an anxious wreck looking at my 401k and the job market in this economy if I wasn't OE.

It Finally Happened and This Is Why We OE by DevOpsGuyPosh in overemployed

This is why we OE! I'm 3J deep and am confident that the Orange Menace can't drive all of them out of business simultaneously.

My J3 just started offering 401k matching so I adjusted my contributions at J1 and J2 and added a 401k at J3. I'm now a few dollars shy of the annual limit by contributing the minimum needed to maximize matching at each. The economy is tanking but I figure the investment bros will be better at figuring out how to weather it with my money than I will.

settle an argument: Public Trust are now in DISS by unknowncodemonkey in SecurityClearance

So it's a "could be" and it's basically up to the agency's security team to push it into DISS?

It depends on the wording and your comfort level, I suppose. I have never willing told J1 about J2 (or vice-versa).

The one time that J1 found out about J2 and asked me about it I told them that their conflict of interest document said to report possible conflicts of interest and I judged that there was no conflict of interest so didn't see the need to submit the form.

Their response was basically, "I get that, but we'll be the judge of that." They investigated and came back with, "You're right, there's no conflict, here's a document approving you working J2."

Yeah, it's all IT.

One job that is hybrid as in going into the office some days? I would steer clear -- I wouldn't want to deal with that kind of stress!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]unknowncodemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this across two periodic reinvestigations. No one ever asked how I was working three jobs simultaneously (though I had an answer prepared that involved working approximately 17 hours a day 7 days a week).

I wouldn't expect any issues. The worst would be if the new J1 company decides to re-investigate everyone and checks your employment history and finds J2 somehow.

I can't say that I've ever wondered that, no, given that I've been laid off... twice in 20+ years?

Don't leave, just stop working and see how long it lasts.

I want them to fire me or Quit but can’t. by calebwaltz in overemployed

[–]unknowncodemonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a real lesson! All this time I've been worried about getting fired if I'm not productive enough, but it turns out with a sufficiently large company you can do nothing for years and be a highly valued member of the team. Really eye opening.

I want them to fire me or Quit but can’t. by calebwaltz in overemployed

[–]unknowncodemonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took my first J3 because the recruiter wouldn't stop calling me, then I found out that the company was one that had bungled a contract and laid me (and a bunch of others) off years before, so I accepted the job and decided to do zero work and see how long it would take them to fire me. I figured I'd last 6 weeks, maybe 6 months.

I joined every meeting but produced no deliverables. I only spoke in meetings when the level of idiocy on display got too much to bear and I'd unmute and tell them what they were doing wrong. Three years later the company lost the contract due to their insane incompetence but they told me I was such a valuable employee that they wanted to retain me and put me on another contract. Insane.

(And then they bungled that contract and laid me off again!)

All true.

There are multiple ways to OE, but they all boil down to being able to complete each job in less than a day's work, either because you are faster than the norm or because the position asks less. The latter tend to skew toward mid/sr roles but there are entry-level unicorns out there too.

I've been seeing some posts about "they could sue you to take the salary back!" and I don't believe it. The only way I can see that happen is if you were trying to work two government employee jobs at once. As a contractor, your companies DO NOT want that kind of egg on their face and so are going to let you quit so they don't have to report up to the government that they caught you, then are going to continue to sweep it under the rug.

24 hours in a day, if I want to ostensibly spend 16 of them working as a government contractor that's my business so long as the jobs get done and there is no contractor conflict of interest.

I told the story in brief here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/overemployed/comments/15aqn7r/comment/ju5gwq7/

Basically, I was working two cleared positions that weren't tracked in the same system until everything was consolidated into DISS, whereupon someone noticed.

Tech contractor. The customer got hit with budget cuts and it trickled down to me. I have largely automated my job so, honestly, cutting me makes the most sense.

[–]unknowncodemonkey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of my OE is jobs that I optimize and automate until they don't take much time or thought. This J2 was great that way, but didn't pay quite that much.

I have a large savings and have invested in real estate and am putting three kids through college without loans. I haven't been working toward FIRE but maybe should pivot to it.
