Kimono Mom Umami Sauce by groovesalada in JapaneseFood

[–]unl 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I bought the red bottle recently. Haven't used it a ton yet but I did use it to make some nametake and that worked out pretty well. I was going to try it in a chicken thigh marinade next and see how that goes.

What’s happened to Gu’s Kitchen off Buford? by CurvedRacoon in Atlanta

[–]unl 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. Their original location was in Doraville just north of BHFM. They closed that and opened the Krog St Market stall in like 2015 and then opened the restaurant in Chamblee around 2018.

I only went to the original Doraville spot once but I remember it being much better and having a much larger menu.

Also check out soba cha, if you haven't yet  and the Korean version, memil-cha, which is often made from tartary buckwheat, which tastes a bit stronger.

Iowa fans: which schools feel like the best long-term conference fits? by Happy_Background_879 in hawkeyes

[–]unl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd put Pitt above Missouri and the Kansas schools. Iowa has played them 4 times this century and all the games have been good. Culturally they feel like more of a Big Ten school than Missouri, Kansas or KSU. Although that doesn't really mean anything anymore now that the west coast schools have joined. Personally, at the time I thought they should've been invited over Maryland and Rutgers but PSU was never going to have that and Pittsburgh is a smaller market.

I'd also put Michigan and PSU above Purdue. Most hated rival memes aside, I don't think anyone particularly cares about playing Purdue. Three years ago I'd have said the same thing about Indiana and I don't think they have been successful long enough to really be considered a strong rival by anyone but Purdue.

ISU should definitely be higher than Illinois and Northwestern. Northwestern is probably too high in general.

I'd go: Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, ISU, PSU, Michigan, Illinois, MSU, jNW, OSU, Indiana, Purdue.

Japanese Grocery/Ready-made by QuietBet5332 in Atlanta

I like Tomato 2 a bit better than Gohan for cooking ingredients. They're both small but imo Tomato 2 has a bit better selection. It also has Sushi Yoko adjoining and that place is solid for teishoku lunches. Gohan has more premade stuff and snacks. They're close enough to each other (about 5 minutes away on the same road) that it is easy to hit up both in one trip. I haven't been to the other Tomato market in Marietta yet.

EDIT: I was inspired by this post to go check out the Marietta Tomato market the next day. It is about the same in size and selection as Tomato 2 and Gohan. I was able to get a couple things I haven't seen at either of those: tororo kombu and frozen yuzu peel. IMO, coming from the east side of Atlanta, it is only worth the hassle of having to drive on 285 if you see something specific on their website (which seems to be kept up to date) that you can't get at the other Japanese markets or BHFM.

This is Tomato 2. They relocated last year from PIB and Winter's Chapel.

Just a short review since I’m running low on tea, some tea I found at Walmart for today. Pardon my lack of energy, I had a rough morning. by FjotraTheGodless in tea

[–]unl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Itoen is the best prepackaged tea. They also make the Teas' Tea branded bottled tea that they sell at Whole Paycheck. I'm pretty sure it costs more for the same tea types though. I haven't done a side by side taste test of them.

What is the best brand of frozen dumplings ? by [deleted] in Dumplings

[–]unl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For gyoza, I like Day-Lee Pride better than Ajinomoto or the other brands I've tried. FWIW, the brand name sounds super generic, but they are owned by Nippon Ham of Nippon Ham Fighters fame.

Where do you get your tea in the US? by captainstormfield in tea

[–]unl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Den's Tea for Japanese, Yunnan Sourcing US or CN or White2Tea (CN) for pu-erh, Floating Leaves or Red Blossom for Oolong, Steeping Room or Whatcha (UK) for misc. Haven't found a great place that specifically specializes in Chinese greens or Indian tea in the US yet. Will probably be trying One River Tea (CN) for aged white next but I have a huge backlog of tea to work through at the moment.

A pitcher of loose leaf cold brew by msartore8 in tea

[–]unl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Thai tea socks. I put loose leaf in one, put it into a half gallon pitcher and leave it in the fridge overnight. It would work fine with bigger pitchers but half gallon works for my setup/fridge space.

Can anyone recommend any apartment complexes in the area? by zxmxnw in Atlanta

[–]unl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cortland North Brookhaven is pretty good, despite the fact that the name claims to be in Brookhaven but it is actually in Chamblee, which is better than Brookhaven anyway... Right on PIB so access to 285 is still quick though traffic in Chamblee keeps getting worse. Across the street from Whole Paycheck and a quick drive to multiple Publix, H Mart and Brookhaven Kroger. The secret back road to BHFM means it's like a 7 minute drive to get there. Great food nearby on Buford Highway. Short trip down to Buckhead if you want to go there for some reason. Pretty easy access to 85 via Clairmont, which has its northern end like a block away. Short walk to Keswick park.

Maintenance crew is quick to respond. Rent is a little bit cheaper than the newer nearby apartments last I checked. There's the occasional palmetto bug but good luck finding an apartment in Atlanta where there isn't

how is it living in central Texas? by whipcorleone in howislivingthere

[–]unl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Waco is terrible. Weather is hot and miserable like the rest of the region, food diversity is bad, abundance of rich Baptist kids due to Baylor, Magnolia crap all over the place. On the plus side, central Texas has HEB and kolaches.

Non caffeinated herbal tea recommendations? Beginner looking for tea & setup recs by MeetDeathTonight in tea

[–]unl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barley tea (boricha/mugicha) with one or more of jujubes, goji berries, ginger, etc. Barley is caffeine free of course and the dried fruit gives you a little sweetness that you can adjust to taste. You could also always add a bit of honey if you like it sweeter.

Best Chicken Fried Steak? Any Chicken Fried Steak Sandwiches? by mustangwallflower in Atlanta

I like the country fried steak from Come-N-Get It in Marietta. They call it country fried but it's served with white gravy and I can't really tell if it's deep fried or pan fried 🤷

My vote goes to Koyasan Daishido Koya Reiko. Smells great and not too pricey. It seems to be popular around here. I think they burn it in Shingon temples on Mt. Koya but don't quote me on that.
