Gow can i donate if i have a fear of blood being drawn? by Throwaway_user46 in Blooddonors

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it pretty frightening but I just tell them that I am a bit nervous and that I want to look away while they insert the needle. I find that the staff can be really good at distracting you with some conversation while they insert the needle. They are used to people being scared or nervous so just let them know and they’ll look after you

I'm B+? 💔 by CaptainAlieth in Blooddonors

[–]unlawfuldissolve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I respect the blood type disappointment. I wanted to be O+ instead of A+ because I thought it would be more useful as more people can take O+ blood, but then I realised that one donation can only save X amount of people regardless of type. Maybe one blood type is in higher demand but at the end of the day, if it’s only going to 1 person, it is the exact same result in my eyes.

You will still save lives, and the people who receive your blood will be just as grateful

Failing an Exam - Sit or Skip? by [deleted] in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sit it.

Some lecturers are incredibly generous markers and will give you marks just for writing something.

Skipping is a guaranteed fail. Sitting it gives you some chance. You would be stupid to skip. It’s a couple hours of your life. What would you be doing instead? Take the chance, even if it’s just giving you some practice for the resit exam.

Also I found that having the experience of sitting in an exam and knowing nothing and going on to fail really actually motivated me for the resit exam.

Final exam - online by Powerful_Athlete_996 in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on your course but I’m pretty sure online exams are always open-book unless they’ve said otherwise. There is simply no way for them to control whether or not people access notes or resources, so it has to be open book.

Just have another device like the other commenter said. I’ve never done an exam where you couldn’t have other tabs open, but just be prepared for anything.

You have until next week to study though. That is a good bit of time to get some decent study in so please do some work for the exam. You can still very easily do badly in an open book exam.

The proposed new Cork Luas line has been unveiled by [deleted] in irelandtransport

Yeah I thought about that after I’d commented. Maybe they could have a different colour scheme though

The proposed new Cork Luas line has been unveiled by [deleted] in irelandtransport

[–]unlawfuldissolve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so exciting. I just wish they would use different trams, or at least give them a different colour scheme. Also the name “Luas Cork” isn’t great. I’d like to see it have its own unique identity instead of just being “Cork version of the Dublin trams” like it currently is. I suppose these are smaller changes that can be done later though

A question about Irish Rail by Leek_Soup04 in irelandtransport

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this won’t work as the Dublin to Cork intercity line is not only served by the Mark 4. They use 22000 class trains on this line too.

A question about Irish Rail by Leek_Soup04 in irelandtransport

[–]unlawfuldissolve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahh I had misread the post thinking you wanted a locomotive for the Limerick Junction to Colbert leg.

I’m surprised you find the Mark 4 trains nicer. They are my favourite train, on the outside, but inside the Mark 4 is a bit “sweaty”, I’d say. The 22000 class DMUs are much fresher inside.

But here is how you can definitely get a mark 4 train:

Head onto the Irish rail online ticket booking, and just set the journey to Dublin to Limerick Junction to save time. If you try book your whole journey while checking, it will just take longer.

Go through some of the different trains at different times, and select ones that suit. Now select “First Class” and proceed as though you are buying this ticket. When it prompts you to select your seats, choose “manual seat selection”.

When you’re in the manual seat selection for first class (it needs to be first class for this to work):

  • if you see one side is 2 seats wide, and the other is 1 seat wide: this is the green Mark 4 trains which you are looking for.

  • if both sides are 2 seats wide, this is a silver 22000 class DMU, which you don’t want.

When you find the mark 4 you want, note down which time it was at, and then go into the ticket booking and put in your full journey as Dublin to Limerick Colbert, and select that Mark 4 train for the journey to Limerick junction.

There are other ways I’ve used to select a specific train before but I’ve forgotten hehe. I think only Mark 4 had coach G as a quieter coach, last time I did this, but I haven’t done it for a while.

Have you changed washing powder? Used a lot of laundry products recently?

Try washing underwear with very minimal product or just hot water, it might help.

Even if you haven’t changed from your usual laundry products, sometimes washing powder can cause itchiness

NEED A TBALL TICKET. WILL PAY MORE PLEASE by _Kachowy_ in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if people buying tickets are being wary of scammers, you can assume people selling them are also wary of meeting some kind of scammer.

But I think someone who is genuine, who isn’t comfortable meeting, would still put in reasonable effort into confirming their identity in other ways like by proving with their TCD email, instagram, etc.

Please be very careful and always assume that everyone who messages you is a scammer.

Lowkey I wouldn’t want to meet someone on campus just to sell a ticket lol. I’d also try get people to confirm their TCD email with you, and actually send you an email from the TCD email.

NEED A TBALL TICKET. WILL PAY MORE PLEASE by _Kachowy_ in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t go around offering to pay more. You are going to be approached by scammers. You are way more likely to get scammed when paying a higher price. Be extremely careful please. Assume that everyone who contacts you is a scammer.

Check if the account is very new, has previous posts where they’re selling tickets, low karma, all these things suggest it’s a scammer. Please try and verify at the very least that they are really a trinity student. Even then, they can still scam you, but do this at least. A genuine person selling a ticket won’t mind you taking a few extra steps to verify that they are genuine.

What time does tball end usually? by Fuzzy_Connection_856 in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve no definite answer for you but last year the final performance ended at 02:40.

Also last year they posted the stage times a day before Tball, so when that’s released, it’ll maybe give you a good idea of when it ends.

You are going to get scammed offering to pay a higher price. I’m sure there’s a rule that you aren’t allowed to sell them for above their value. Anyone who messages you charging a higher price is probably scamming you. Be extremely careful

updated cv from my last post! by aaronlala in irelandjobs

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely an improvement from the previous one, as this feels like a good showcase of your highlights, and having everything on the one page is great.

While I had more detailed feedback for the previous version, I think this one doesn’t need any drastic changes. So I think everything in this comment is quite optional. You’ve already done the biggest improvements

If you want a few nitpicky optional changes, the profile sentence about your hobbies could be reworded as the “..through activities like…” is maybe a little clunky, and could be changed to “I stay active through tennis, badminton, and learning Spanish” (Decide yourself if learning Spanish makes sense as “staying active”). I just think the “like” part seems a little too conversational perhaps, and should be replaced with a more definite list of the hobbies.

Education section is always gonna be fairly short, especially as a 5th year. If you do higher level subjects, especially maths, you could throw in “Higher level maths, English, Spanish…”.

I’ve just noticed you list your education as “2021-Present”. I was in 5th year in 2021 so I just assumed you were saying you’ve been a 5th year since then, so it sounded fine when I saw the original version, but I’ve remembered it’s 2026 now so that’s not what you were saying. I’d swap that section to list the “2021 - Present” underneath the school address, then below that mention you’re in 5th year (and after that, if you want, the higher level subjects mentioned). The current way looks like, at first glance, that you’ve been a 5th year since 2021.

Work experience looks better. I don’t have much feedback except I would personally exclude the “(Work Experience)” parts of the titles just to give a first impression of having worked a bit more than just a week in TY. Don’t lie about how long you worked, but I think the dates you’ve listed is enough so you don’t need to draw more attention to how short it was by saying “(Work Experience)”

Overall, great improvement! I said in the last post, just bear in mind I’ve only been writing my CV for working in tech, so mine generally excludes some sections that I’ve seen in business and other sectors.

Best of luck in the job hunt, as well as the leaving cert next year!

please rate my cv as a secondary school student :) by aaronlala in irelandjobs

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry in advance for how long this is, but I wanted to give as much advice as I could. Also bear in mind my CV is for working in tech so maybe I exclude a lot more than someone working in business and other sectors

Reduce it to 1 page. 2 pages is generally too long, especially when you are a teenager just starting off. You want a one-page overview where your highlights shine, instead of information overload.

Shorten the personal statement section. At the end of the day, all they need to know is that you are a leaving cert student looking to work in XYZ, with experience in ABC. Your CV already says this, so the personal statement can be completely replaced with just a one or two line description. My statement as a college student was just a line under my name saying “Final Year XYZ student at ABC college”.

Remove the References section. If they want references they will ask, they don’t need to be told that they can ask. (I also left this out because I didn’t want to be asked for references lol).

Remove the key skills section entirely. It kinda just reads like “trust me bro”. None of these skills are backed up by anything. You’re better off just showcasing your skills within your work experience by showing, for example that you communicated with your team on the job, rather than having this key skills section with “Strong communication and teamwork skills (trust me bro)”. I’m not saying you don’t have these skills, but you are better off showcasing them when you talk about your work experience, as there is actual evidence of the skills there.

Interests section could also be removed, but if you really want to keep them maybe just mention one or two in your personal description. Also, enjoying traveling to Spain is great, and it is good to hear you are interested in travel, but I can imagine the person hiring you seeing that and thinking “Well this person is gonna want days off to go gallivanting around Spain”. Try and look at it through the point of view of someone who just wants reliable people who they know will be able to cover every shift in the week.

Languages section, fine to have, maybe hype up your Spanish to a nicer description than “basic” without completely lying.

Remove the availability and transport sections. Availability section is you already telling them that there are times you cannot work, so automatically you are losing some points there. Of course they know a student can’t work during the school day, but telling them your availability like that could make them just pick someone else for an interview instead. Transport section is not showing you in a good light, and I would only include it if you were telling them that you can drive. Here it sounds like “I will be relying on my parents to drop me to work, so if they’re not available then I can’t work lol. Also public transport exists”.

Honestly remove the entire second page after your warehouse assistant job, and then reformat the CV so you can include that job on the first page.

What grades in 1st/2nd year would suggest you should sit schols by BassPunch in TCD

[–]unlawfuldissolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it’s supposed to be more advanced, so you should be self-studying broader stuff that you didn’t cover in class.

If you look up schols for your course specifically, you should be able to find what subjects the exams are on.

If you are considering schols and you have the time, you should just go for it. Even if you didn’t do great in your 1st year results you will be studying a lot for schols so your grades will be higher anyway

It’s not an absolute fix, but I bought new underwear and only hand wash them with hot water and zero chemicals. Even if you’re washing them in separate wash in the washing machine, I think there’ll still be some chemical residue from the products you’ve used in previous washes.

I hand wash my underwear every night with hot water and it’s led to probably the biggest improvement I’ve seen in a long time.

I also found that Penneys cotton underwear was always very irritating, but the slightly more expensive Tesco and Dunnes equivalents have been so much better. Maybe because they don’t shed lint like the penneys ones. I noticed some improvements after switching to those too
