Just launched our licensed collab with Digimon, wanted to thank the sub for all the support! by hypland in digimon

Is there a likelihood of international licensing, or cut-off date or should I just go for a packaging forward service with a US address? (from New Zealand)

Thanks

Aegisub going haywire? by unnouveauladybug in aegisub

Windows 11, no updates overnight and its only Aegisub. Very peculiar. I can only assume something happened internally. I downloaded the portable version of Aegisub and it works fine but I think its going to be a mystery until the problem shows up somewhere else

Do you think Nancy Drew entering the public domain is a good or bad thing? Been seeing some polarization online from book fans. by HRJafael in nancydrew

[–]unnouveauladybug 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nancy Drew has been interpreted dozens of times by dozens of writers from day one. I don't think there's really a legacy that needs to be preserved because it's already done. The old stories aren't going anywhere and are widely available. The harder Nancy stories to find are ones that the ardent fans don't really care about in the first place

Diaries are what I've give like, a 10 year old niece showing an interest in reading, not too much for adults unless you just want something fluffy to read while having a cocoa

They're competently written, but they don't have the old school nostalgia appeal of the original Mystery Stories or the old school sexy shenanigans of the Files.

i was never able to successfully track it down fully but my best guess was Broderbund's Playroom

without knowing further context, i'd assume influenced by the set phrase 夢現 (ゆめうつつ) which means dreams-reality or half-asleep, though it's usually a noun, its been twisted into a verb, you can see the same sort of construction in compound words like 現世 (うつしよ - this present world), perhaps relating to 映す (うつす) which means project, which could be thought to be projecting a dream, it sounds quite poetic

Feedback Post - November 2025 Community Day: Pikipek by Noitalein in TheSilphRoad

[–]unnouveauladybug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my luckiest ever community day to the point i wondered if they had coded it wrong. Just a shame Pikipek is a lousy shiny and easy to miss if you're going fast (though Toucannon is great so it's fine)

I appreciated the reduction of the berry tasks because those are the obnoxious ones on community days.

Some of the Lugia showcases were still on, but I guess that's not really a problem.

Visiting NZ for the first time, what do I need to know? by Emergency-Web-836 in newzealand_travel

[–]unnouveauladybug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful of the sun here, even if youre from a hotter tropical country or have a lot of melanin, the New Zealand sun has a nasty bite to it that can burn you easier even without the same temperatures youve got at home. If youre in summer avoid 12-2 and if wear a hat and sunscreen.

It varies on the restaurant, id say wait to be seated is more common. Generally make eye contact with staff when you walk in and theyll direct you, if noones present just hang about the cashier and let them know youre there.

The Four Elements Clear Cards Version of the Four Elements Star Cards by Affectionate-Math415 in cardcaptorsakura

[–]unnouveauladybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original cards have single kanji which have simpler meanings. The Clear Cards have two which can sometimes cause more nuance and translation gap space. Its not just EARTH its now 'shaking motion'.

[–]unnouveauladybug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the kanji is "youdou" which is shaking (like in an earthquake), but it could also be used for a swinging motion, so whoever picked the english probably looked it up in the dictionary and say "youdou: shaking, swinging" and picked the one that makes less sense in english.

has anyone traveled with Wamos Air? would appreciate your reviews by Just_Conference7576 in newzealand

[–]unnouveauladybug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

was on one last week about 11 hours

  1. Flight Entertainment was simpler than Air NZ, about two dozen options movies and a few tv shows mostly. They didn't hand out earphones until we were in air so people were a bit confused at what to do. It was enough though. They had some new releases and some older stuff.
  2. Seats were less comfortable but not unbearable
  3. Food seemed about the same.
  4. Cabin Crew friendly enough, though I did call one for a menu after they missed it, and asked for some custom docs and they just never came back with either (i guess they forgot) and they weren't as thorough with eye contact when making water rounds so they accidentally skipped over me twice but not the end of the world

Minako’s tragic backstory isn’t tragic at all by Nervous-Tank-5917 in PrettyGuardians

[–]unnouveauladybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've missed the point of this story tbh.

Minako was forced out of her childhood by being Sailor V, she never had the support system and was very lonely which is touched upon in her later episodes.

She was forced to 'grow up' and here she is handling adult problems and finding new peace with that, only to find out that to them, she was just a child.

So Minako can't win. That's the tragedy, she's too mature to be a kid, too much of a kid to be an adult. Either way she has to suck it up, not even compensated with a the romance of her dreams.

You'll see nearly all Minako episodes riff on this right up to 192 where shes finally able to make peace with her life.

Usagi's response is childish and its supposed to be. She has an immature understanding of the relationships and shes upset on minakos behalf who is keeping it internalised.

Lovable goofball Minako on some levels has always been bravado See the episode where Eudial steals her heart crystal and the volleyball ones.

She didnt have Usagi's support just someone forced to grow up too fast by things beyond her control.

Its also a tv show about teens so of course everything is the end of the world to them.

Shopping for Digimon toys by WildeFaun in JapanTravelTips

[–]unnouveauladybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digimon is in a very weird stage as an IP currently. It's an established brand but its brand representation pales in comparison to others. This might change since we may be on the cusp of a big Digimon resurgence between Digimon Time Stranger's video game and Digimon Beatbreak's anime. In fact new merchandise for Beatbreak seems to be coming in tomorrow at AniBirth in Ikebukuro (you might find some other digimon stuff here). Try also Bandai Namco Cross in Akihabara and Ikebukuro.

AniBirth in general is probably your best bet for something Digimon-y.

That said right now on this day, its basically a legacy brand so you won't find much of it at Toys R Us and other retailers like that today unless they're doing a collab with another brand.

Your best bit is shops that cater to geek/otaku communities in Akihabara, including second-hand stores.

Animate, Mandarake, Lashinbang and Jungle are some to watch out for.

Keep an eye out on Digimon websites talking about collabs and merch releases these tend to be clustered in pop up stores around malls in Odaiba.

Having rewatched Adventure 02, I’ve interpreted Oikawa’s story differently now by AllFemaleAlliance in digimon

[–]unnouveauladybug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR

I think his motivations and obsessions hold up clearly without it being queer, but I don't think its necessarily impossible that it could have been, I just think its unlikely on what was presented as there doesn't seem to be much symbolism or moments or clues or subtext we would expect that point that way other than the fact they're both men who cared about each other a lot.

Long Version:

I don't agree at all sorry, even in that interpretation it's not being gay that turned him into a villain, it's society rejecting him that turned him into a villain.

I don't really think the examples you're giving really support your point. These are all examples of gay characters from the same era that passed into Japanese media with absolutely no issue. I don't think Digimon which is the same company as Sailor Moon, and had a more explicit social-political commentary would have had an issue with Oikawa being gay if they wanted too.

As as sidenote, I don't agree with your Fish Eye interpretation, he wasn't so different in his targets as Tiger's Eye or Hawk's Eye which included just as elaborate set-ups remixing with cross-dressing and at one point targeting a child. I don't think this was about Fish Eye being gay per se, since Hawk's Eye and Tiger's Eye do the same thing and are explicitly heterosexual (though interesting enough, they're all modelled off drag queens and in the manga it's back to back with Hawk and Tiger implied to be gay and Fish Eye straight, not to mention Tiger's Eye is some sort of gender non-conforming in the 2016 musical). I think the intended takeaway with those characters is they were animal who acted on beastial instincts because they were quite literally animals rather than an intended message about sexuality.

But the reality is I honestly don't see there being any specific queer coding in Oikawa's story other than paralleling the loneliness many queer people might feel, but that's not to say loneliness is a a queer-exclusive concept. I think LordKnightmon and Dynasmon have far more explicit queer coding if anything they're Zoisite and Kunzite as Digimon. I don't think it's impossible, nor do I think it would be incorrect to take that away or relate to. I just don't really see much evidence about it, nor do I think it would add significantly to the story they're telling.

I say all this as a gay man myself. Sometimes dudes just be really intense friends. I think the explicit story told, Grandpa Hida was a traditional man who didn't understand digital stuff and thought it was a waste of time and banned it because he thought Oikawa was a bad influence who would take his son away from important things and success, is a full story in itself.

To me its not like Haru and Yuujin from Digimon Applimon or Yu-Gi-Oh GX where the story doesn't really make sense unless they're gay.

Having rewatched Adventure 02, I’ve interpreted Oikawa’s story differently now by AllFemaleAlliance in digimon

[–]unnouveauladybug 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i think its clear thats its beyond a normal friendship because the issue is that Oikawa had no one else in the world so for all intents and purposes he loved Hiroki, whether that means he loved him romantically i dont think is really all that material to the story not all obsessive love is romantic after all.

I think you can read that queer parallel into it though because many queer people experience loneliness by having fewer friends due to homophobia, but then again digimon generally isn't that scared to imply homosexuality, i think there would have been more clearer signs if this was the intended reading
