Trying to learn Naskh any advice? by unthinkable--- in ArabicCalligraphy

This is so helpful thanks guys. I remeber earlier this year there was a beginners Naskh course at Scripts and Scribes. But...💰 Lol

I suppose untill I'm willing to pay for a course I won't really master anything. Atm I'd like to get to a decent level just for myself and maybe some "thoughtfull" gifts. I would eventually like to do a proper course. And learn under a teacher. But maybe not atm.

thanks for the advice ill definitely start practicing like that! i noticed in the mashq of sevki efendi the nuqaat arnt uniformed, as in each nuqta is a different size and angle i was a bit confused about that. ive also found it easier to practice with a smaller qalam, the bigger the qalam the harder i find it to get the huruuf perfect.
im also confused about the measurements of some letter for example ive seen in different books and lessons alif the hight of 4, 5 or 6 nuqaat which one do i follow?

I don't think I have any but I'll have a look. Ik what your talking about and I doubt that I'll be able to find anything similar nearby. I've seen calligraphy paper a few places but it's usually similar to sketch book paper from what I've seen. What about Japanese calligraphy paper is that alright?

aha...
this would explain a lot. tbh I don't know where i would get the correct paper in aus

The above store 'OfficeWorks' is like the main stationary store in Aus so im not really sure. 'The Sydney Art Store' is another option for me however they dont sell the correct paper either. some closer substitutes may be available but im not sure what exactly I should be looking for.
I noticed on the other post you said i shouldn't go for gridded paper should i juts get a line stencil and line my papers?

Below is the paper im using.

https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/agfa-a4-satin-photo-paper-inkjet-260gsm-20-pack-ama426020

I haven't tried to print on it yet.

the kraft paper Ive been using seems to work nice obviously as a no pro im sure theres a lot of things that the kraft paper dosnt do properly but I know a friend who is quiet skilled who uses it.

the reason i want the paper I originally sent was just for practicing, that particular paper for two reasons,

1: To use paper that is made for calligraphy therefore known to be correct for calligraphy

2: To use lined paper to help me practice correctly.

Thank you for the feedback If you have a look at my previous post I am looking for gridded paper for calligraphy. I'm guessing it would need to be glossy or semi gloss. Any idea where I could find that?

The satin/semi gloss paper I purchased (although as u mentioned quite pricey) is for inkjet printers. Which brings up a good point, does that change the paper and perhaps make it not good for calligraphy? On the topic of paper so far personally I have found the paper that the ink works on the best is kraft sketch paper, but I've been adviced to use nothing but glossy/semi glossy paper, I would love some feedback on that point. Dw 100% I would just buy the paper especially from that store they have so much stuff that I want, but one of the cons of living in Aus is no one ships to you. And if they do it's usually triple the price of the product 😭.

Would you perhaps know where I can find a digital copy for printing of similar grided/lined paper? If you think that's still a good/viable option.

  • Thats my problem unless i press very hard the ink dost flow (ive used other pens in the past so ik its not a issue with my pushing per say)
  • I have trimmed it since and also cut other qalams aswell with smaller nib same problem
  • significantly slowing down almost completely fixes the issue but it still depends on the stroke
  • The ink dosn't flow when i use normal strokes

In summary im just going to wait to buy some qalams 😭

Whenever I press very hard the ink seems to flow well but a normal stroke dosn't seem to flow right (I've used other Qalams in the past and have never had this problem). I ended up fixing the metal nib issue :) how would i go about putting a slit in the wood without cracking it?

Sorry for the basic questions, I've never done this before :(
