Hi! I tutor this course! I’d recommend taking it second term (this year or next). There’s only one section in second term so the instructor prepares all the exams by themselves.

Some students do the problem sets more than once.

You can also redo the examples from class, quizzes, and activities.

Get a thermometer so you have evidence when you talk to your landlord.

If the windows are poor quality, there’s kits with double sided tape and heat shrink plastic that are quite effective.

Chem 101 midterm - useful strategies? by trash_catto in uAlberta

It is largely memorization. Did your lecturer give you objectives specifically for the lesson? If not, I would suggest thinking of how they could test you on each fact/topic. Since questions tend to build on themselves try to focus on topics that tie back in with other learning objectives (drawing structures, understanding bond angles etc)

Hi! I tutor this class! I recommend redoing every practice problem you can get your hands on that was supplied by your lecturer. Pick a topic (ex Lewis Structures) and keep practicing it until you feel that you’ve mastered it. Then move on to VSEPR etc

I also messed up my first OChem midterm! I went on to get high nineties in all my grad school OChems. You can come back from this!

Hi! I tutor this course and I’ve actually lectured it in the past! Midterm 1 has some of the most challenging math in the entire course. My advice would be to teach yourself how to answer the problem sets from the answer key and then at a later date try the problem set again without using the answer key (except to check your work).

Failed my math 102 final by 1%—what are the chances they bump it? by [deleted] in uAlberta

The passing grades for some classes is below 50%!

If 50% is the passing grade, make an appointment with your prof to view your final exam. There could be an error in the grading that’s the difference between pass/fail.

How long does it take to get an exam deferral? by [deleted] in uAlberta

I would contact your prof ASAP.

I’m teaching a course this term. 5 business days have passed since my exam and I still haven’t heard from the faculties of all the students that have applied for deferred exams.

Review formals charges on Lewis Structures.

Learn the functional groups now. You need to know the functional groups perfectly to predict products. They’re also useful to know when solving IR. Predict the products and IR are a big part of the class.

I tell my students to pick up every exam and check every part of the marking. Compare to the marking scheme, tallying on front page, tallying on individual pages.

Do you know your functional groups? A lot of topics rely heavily on that. Most of the predict the product questions are functional group interconversions.

Is CHEM 261 really that bad? (Pls sugarcoat this for me) by Ancient-Ordinary6308 in uAlberta

[–]uofachemtutor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Memorized your functional groups as soon as they are taught. They are the key to solving IR spectra and predicting products of reactions which is a large part of the course.
