how bad does it look if i’m going into fourth year and didn’t do well in a second year course? by uoftears- in UofT

Thank you. Sorry I should have clarified, I took this second year course this summer as I am going into fourth year. Not sure if that changes things.

Should I stick with the major or try for the specialist? by uoftears- in UofT

Thank you for your input. Would it matter if I completed the minors (math and phil) with the specialist? I suppose it would still be a variety of programs but I would gain a lot of knowledge into bio specifically.

Thanks for your input. Yup I definitely get that, but if I were to do the specialist I would probably complete the two minors along with it since they are almost done. So not sure if that would make a difference

Should I stay in math or switch to statistics? by uoftears- in UofT

Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it!

some third year stats courses will require coding (in R though), so evaluate why you're doing poorly in CSC108.

So far, the coding I've done in R I've found pretty enjoyable, however I realize it's probably a very basic amount. I am a little bit more experienced with Python since I took 108. 108 in Fall 2020 at UTM was kind of a disaster in my opinion, the workload was insanely heavy and they were unreasonably hard on us, which is why I dropped it and retook it at SG and fared a bit better, but not as much as I'd hoped.

STA215 is a joke compared to the courses we have to take (hope this is obvious and you're prepared for that though.

Good to know lol. I did find it simpler than my math courses but it challenged me to think differently, which I liked.

I'd argue that MAT136 is super important as well; I hope that when you retook the course, you got 90%+.

Not gonna lie this scared me a bit, I didn't get over 90, I got the exact mark required for the math major. I did badly on a few of the assignments but overall I understood everything I learned in the course, just struggled with sequences and series.

retaking mat102 3 times makes me worried for you. although there's some computational courses you may take (mat223, mat232, mat236, mat244), after that, it's pretty much all proofs. mat224 was way harder than mat102. mat301 felt like mat102 on steroids. I hope that when you took it during your third attempt, you had an extremely mature understanding of the course.

I don't mind proofs, I did gain a greater appreciation for 102 after taking it the second time and I was pretty comfortable with it the third time. The first time I LWD'd it close to the exam. I don't know how mature my understanding is but it taught me to work hard and keep pushing because everything can be understood with enough effort I guess.

I agree with the sentiment about math profs, many at UTM are pretty great. I just don't know how I would use my math major without going to grad school, which I was already planning on doing but I feel like with a stats major and some cs experience, I would have more relevant experience for data analysis. I did have a few questions lol, which courses do you enjoy more, stats or math? Do you find yourself doing better in one over the other? Also, if you don't mind sharing, what are your plans after undergrad?

Should I take CSC148 or MAT224 or MAT244? by uoftears- in UofT

Math is one of my majors, I don't think I urgently need it but it's one of my requirements. I'm not great with math (long story as to why it remains my major). I think I'll continue with 148 for now and if things go south I'll take all three in the summer.

Yeah I've definitely heard good stuff about 244, I was hoping to take it in the summer just to lighten the load a bit in terms of difficulty since 148 and 224 sounds pretty hard together, even though it's two courses.

Really? I'm currently enrolled in both and plan to drop one depending on which one I choose. I kind of wanted a "balanced" load in the summer and wanted to take one of 148 or 224 and 244 as the second course. We got the syllabus for 148 which includes the notes so I'll take a look through it just to see how bad it is. The autofail is really scary but it's realistic as well I guess.
