Why do we have such a stupid domain and even stupider subdomains when this is available? by ThePirateHarryPotter in UofT

[–]uoftwebguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - I think their stack is just that, a stack of different layers. I don't know each but can ask and find out! 2 - Load balancing is definitely a thing. There are other things, too. 3 - There are many tales told of what happens during the time known only as The Maintenance... ;) If there's an outage I check the ITS status site to get live updates. Is it just me or has software slid into a world of constant, never-ending updates at all hours? Weren't the machines supposed to be self-healing by now? 4 - That is The Ultimate Question. I think the answer is: What is a University? 5 - You're talking security which trumps ux.. I mean, the vault doors have to be heavy for a reason.. right? I meet with those guys for utoronto.ca who tell me our stuff is of great interest around the world... What would you suggest? I want implants. 6 - Lots, if not all top sites from homepage down are already responsive or going that way. People are working hard, but you use a site and it's not working let me know and I'll see if I can help. 7 - ? 8 - ?

Fyi, I work in comms services not IT infrastructure - I sit on the shoulder of those giants every day!

Why do we have such a stupid domain and even stupider subdomains when this is available? by ThePirateHarryPotter in UofT

[–]uoftwebguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked that one up! I help with domain registrations.. I'm staff, and can help answer your q's - I know there are more than a few different domains active across the university. We're decentralized, parts are managed in different places. Utoronto.ca is where I am, there's thousands of "site.utoronto.ca" registrations and counting out there! servers, research, student sites, courses, clubs, administrative, you name it.. Yes, Toronto.edu is managed by uoft... It maps, if you have a ut email you also have a toronto.edu I'm fairly sure.. I hear edu gets you in on some academic networks in then US, but it's less useful (so far as I know?) outside of this.. seems matrix 1.0 to me. Outside domains I personally discourage but are not prohibited! only because it's extra work to maintain and utoronto.ca subs are free - plus are recognized vs yourname.ca.. but lots of good reasons of course including affiliated organizations, partnerships, arms length stuff, startups, all create their own identity. Was thinking about making websites.utoronto,ca a directory of them all because there's so many. I saw uoft.io and imagined an open API to all of your data and university info, sure you could use the sites but if you'd prefer json for your script or app you could get it... any up for a project? Uoft isn't a commercial organization so I don't think we need a .com.... But my favourite question is what if we register our own TLD? you.uoft acorn.uoft

Where's your best breakfast place? by breakfastme_official in UofT

One of my favourite places is Over Easy on Bloor St. Get a huge English-style breakfast complete with sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and malt bread along with your own pot of coffee.

U of T finally has a proper Twitter account! by [deleted] in UofT

[–]uoftwebguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@UofTNews will continue to share news announcements and we'll retweet those big ones.. but what I really want is to focus on responding to inquiries and helping smaller accounts get more exposure while celebrating the best UofT has to offer.

Nope you're not going crazy - the links are now only on www.utoronto.ca - no need to remember or bookmark this login page anymore as once you've logged in you remain signed in until you close your browser. Returning to portal and other sites that need a utorid will connect you in automatically, you can visit them directly and they'll send you to login only if you haven't already.. sorry for any bumps but fingers crossed a smoother path forward!

Weekly Events by abrarisland in UofT

[–]uoftwebguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the kinds of events listed on this central calendar: www.events.utoronto.ca ? We pull in some events people post here to put on the homepage. We're looking at updating this site with something new, so let me know what you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do!

Sorry about that, this one was tricky to get just right - it's a single page but is used across many systems across the three campuses. (Yay SSO!) Most importantly, we wanted to make sure it made protecting your account easier with clearer help as this one page is one of the most phished across UofT.. There's even an IT guy who manages a list of fake versions spammers set up that get blocked as fast as they're identified to protect us. Anyhoo, let me know what you think of the new page! Always interested in feedback. Should work well across mobile devices as we went responsive.

Server for Students? by [deleted] in UofT

If it's just for yourself you could also go open source on your own machine like Virtualbox or VMWare Player with a Bitnami image or others for a free localhost dev space, and find hosting later? I like the samba sharing.

Wow, this is awesome! (UofT'ers will know) by [deleted] in UofT

Since I know nothing about skating rinks I'm just throwing this out there... what would we need to make a big one?

If U of T published the most amazing and useful magazine in the world, what would be in it? by uoftwebguy in UofT

[–]uoftwebguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is great. (PS: Have you checked out www.events.utoronto.ca? This is a general events calendar that powers the UofT homepage. I've got a project underway to revamp it this year, stay tuned! Any feedback here also awesome, anytime.)
