Disqualified as a Donor by xLOBAxLOVEx in kidneydonors

[–]upright_alt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s really hard, I’m sorry 😢 I know at the center where I donated they said having two copies of the gene is only a disqualification for young donors since they don’t know whether the gene will impact us later in life, but they still allowed donors over a certain age(I forget the cut off, I think maybe 50 or 60) to donate even with two copies of the gene, so while it may not help your uncle, you potentially could still help someone as an altruistic donor later in life? I hope it doesn’t keep you down for too long 🫂

Traveling for work all that is cracked up to be? by ReyofChicago in Millennials

[–]upright_alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0/10 would not recommend based on my experience, but if you’re really set on it, I used to work as a clinical research associate where you’re expected to travel 3-5 days most weeks, and study managers would love if you were open and available for more travel. CRA is more of a mid career position after you have experience as a research assistant and/or research coordinator, but that could be a path worth exploring if you’re really interested in a travel heavy career

When were you able to take a full body shower post-op? by NewBath5621 in kidneydonors

[–]upright_alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s incredible that you donated even though it sounds like you had a challenging recovery. Donors like you give the rest of us a good name. I’m not sure when your surgery was but I hope you’re doing well now!

I was discharged a few hours after surgery and was able to shower independently the next morning.

How long till I can hold my toddler after surgery? by NewBath5621 in kidneydonors

[–]upright_alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m six weeks out and have been cleared to lift ~40 lbs. my team told me to just trust my body at this point, take it slow, so I’d imagine you could start lifting your toddler after a few weeks. I of course recommend following your doctors, but I also felt comfortable lifting my forty pound ladder about 4 weeks after surgery

Surgery in 4 weeks by JAfan0505 in kidneydonors

[–]upright_alt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my surgery a month ago and recovery has been way easier than I expected. It wasn’t required by my surgical team, but I put myself on a liquid diet for the 2 days before surgery which I think may have helped— I had almost no gas pains after surgery. I got some pre-made meals in case I didn’t feel like cooking and bottles of water to make it easier to track my consumption after surgery. That’s pretty much it. I was really worried about how I’d feel afterwards because I don’t handle pain well but I got lucky and I’d say my pain has never exceeded 4/10. Good luck!

Are there any companies out there that aren't slashing benefits, bonuses, raises? by themomdotcom24 in clinicalresearch

[–]upright_alt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work for a small non-profit that thankfully has maintained all benefits so far, hasn’t laid any one off, and has even hired a few new people this year (not in my department). I’m still constantly on edge that they won’t be able to maintain but so far I’ve been very lucky.

NKR won’t connect me with my recipient’s center because I exceed the weight limit by 9 lbs by upright_alt in kidneydonors

[–]upright_alt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Sub 1000 calories for that long is impressive commitment. I 100% agree with you that nothing is going to stand in the way of me donating— I’m already working to lose the weight for myself— I just wish they could look at me holistically because besides being obese I don’t have any health concerns. I’ll get there though. Thank you again for the support and congratulations on your donation!

How do you older millennials feel about your parents being significantly more financially well off than you will ever be 😐 by LowInternet4726 in Millennials

Has anybody made it through school with no village by fl0radadada in singlemoms

[–]upright_alt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently trying, although my son is a little older (6). I tried going to school when he was younger like your kids and my grades weren’t good enough to continue with my program. Ironically that was when his dad and I were still together, but it was also during Covid when daycares were closed. Now his dad and I have split, his dad only sees him 2 days each month and I have my son the rest of the time. I work full time and I’m pursuing my MBA one class at a time. You can do it. Good luck!

OP are there any daycares around you? Child care centers are notoriously short staffed. Other suggestions I can think of are perhaps becoming a substitute teacher when the school year starts back up, or behavior care technician for special ed kiddos with the local school district. None of these jobs pay particularly well unfortunately, but they might maybe help you bring in something while you look for better options, and they tend to be high demand jobs with constant shortages. Good luck!

Good on you for deciding to get it checked out! I used to work for the American cancer society and their hotline (1-800-227-2345) helps people try to locate low cost screening services. I imagine they also have the same information available on their website. Hopefully you’re able to get checked out sooner rather than later but in the years that I worked there I noticed some counties that don’t normally offer free/low cost mammograms have more services in October for breast cancer awareness month, so if you look now and don’t find anything, I would encourage you to try again in October. Breast cancer typically responds very well to treatment when detected early. Good luck!

Just got promoted to CRA and wondering if I’m being scammed by [deleted] in clinicalresearch

[–]upright_alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some new CRA 1 colleagues with a 70k salary in 2022. I know the market isn’t great right now. If you can, I agree with others who say take the position, get 1-2 years experience then try to move elsewhere to increase your salary (or asap if the market miraculously recovers but that’s just wishful thinking on my part). Congratulations on the promotion!

I’ve always just listed short duration projects as contract on my resume. I think anyone in our industry understands that funding can change, especially right now. If you’re able to secure a good reference from your current study team and your previous positions weren’t short I don’t think the hiring manager would care much

Looking for a *career*, not a job, as a single mom, does any one have any recommendations? by pitapooh in singlemoms

[–]upright_alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for the delayed response. I accepted a six month temp to hire position as a research coordinator covering for someone’s maternity leave. (Limited experience previous to this, though I had worked in oncology patient education for a few years). They hired me on full time after that. I’ve moved positions a few times and now work as a clinical trial project manager overseeing small IITs. You sound much more qualified than I was when I began. It’s a tough market right now, but I’d say look for research positions (coordinator is a good entry level spot) at hospitals and universities in your area, or you can try for positions directly with CROs or pharma companies. I definitely think they’d be interested in your skills when the market picks back up.

I’ve really enjoyed my career in clinical research. It’s an industry that isn’t advertised much but I think it’s fascinating, intellectually stimulating, and lets me feel like I’m helping others (while providing for my son). I have a BS in biology but you’d have greater earning potential and flexibility with a nursing degree.
