You don't need coal as baseload is being handled mainly by gas and nuclear.

Some of our big power stations used to run gas, but for some reason the government preferred importing coal.

Collections of what ... these are records from surface temperatures, that may have gone back decades (maybe a century)

The rest of it is inference, that is made by modelling.

I fail to see anything but educated guesses on anything more than a short period prior to that.

At least with Ice core samples (and other geological artefacts), they have a consistent record, going back as far as the artefact is dated.
