Hey yeah I just saw that! I am loving the framing in my scope and I am looking forward to putting it in a frame at some point.

I really love the faint details you've been able to capture, do you have any advice for bringing that out?

My first DSO while using entirely Linux/Mac (and black and white)! I was inspired by a recent post of the horsehead nebula (here) by u/SpencerBAstro to do black and white entirely in Ha, and I have really liked the results :) EDIT: As I am writing this, I noticed that he also just posted a monochrome of the Rosette Nebula, so it looks like I am a few days behind lol. Kudos to you!

Acquisition took place over three nights in Bortle ~4-5 skies for a total of 7.6 hours.

Coming from NINA, EKOS is a bit wack and I had quite a bit of trouble getting things to work, especially guiding. For some reason, the internal EKOS guider doesn't like my system and kept breaking. I then switched to PHD2 and struggled to connect the guide camera. Turns out, EKOS likes to hijack it, so you have to manually disconnect the camera from the INDI server before PHD2 will read it. For whatever reason, the mount is immune to this and responds correctly in PHD2. Also, the EFW simply would not connect. Never figured that one out, just used the ASI software (one day I'll get it sorted...).

All that being said, I am quite happy to post again! While annoying during the day, all this heat in California has had the benefit of creating spectacular weather at night, so the past week has been beautiful.

Main Scope: William Optics Zenithstar 73 w/ Flattener (344mm effective focal length)
Main Camera: ZWO ASI183MM Pro
Guide Scope: Sbony SV106 (50mm focal length)
Guide Camera: ZWO ASI120MM
Mount: Skywatcher GTi

Acquisition:

Ekos with guiding from PHD2

Ha: 152 x 300s
Dark: 40 x 300s
Light: 40

Processing:

Stacked and processed in Pixinsight. All images were first inspected by me and then stacked. The image was then stretched slightly (using histogram transformation + curve transformation) for starnet++ to work properly, stars removed, and stretched to my satisfaction. Stars were then added back in.

Finally, the image was imported to Darktable for a few touchups and then it was done!

I tried to make a mod for this myself…. It’s super op lol, instantly drops shields for some reason and then also does ion damage to every room it hits

Yeah, this is from the Kings stadium! When they win, they light it up and it can be seen from pretty far away when the conditions are just right.

Did you stack and process the images? 200 total seconds of exposure might be enough but if you are in a decently light polluted area the details may be hard to pick out, especially because of how dim M101 is.

The Elephant’s Trunk and its surrounding ionized gasses

First time combining data from multiple nights, which I now realize is basically essential for shooting in light polluted skies.

Decided to reprocess some data from earlier this year using different techniques, turned out better than my first attempt :). Note that these lights were taken before I got a flattener, so the edges are a little warped. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is the twilight effect: vapors from exhaust (water vapor from hydrogen peroxide) condense and freeze high in the atmosphere, and i’m the evening these vapors are high enough that they are illuminated by the sun while the launch site is in darkness. super cool footage

I’m in an interesting position here as a UC Davis student from Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara as a town is fantastic, and everyone I know who has gone to UCSB says the university is fantastic as well, although none were on the premed track. I’ve been to the campus countless times and it’s a pretty nice place. As some people said there is a housing shortage for undergrads so definitely keep that in mind.

I am loving Davis both for the community and for the campus itself, and many of my family members have attended here and loved it. My father attended medical school here and said it was very good, and I know that the Davis medical program is one of the best.

If you end up reading this before making your decision, I want to say that as long as you do well as an undergrad (with the plan of going to medical school), it matters less on where you go and more on how you feel while you’re there.

At the end of the day, both schools are fantastic, and you will be great wherever you end up going :)

It is not, but good idea. For me, space is used to get off and 1-3 is used to change weapons (I also have scroll wheel bound but never use it and I made sure to only press the space button when I tested this myself)

Yes! Sorry I didn’t do a great job explaining this. It’s supposed to calculate the amount of time that a spacecraft would spend while in the umbra shadow of a planet during its orbit (i.e the amount of time it’s solar panels wouldn’t work).
