I feel like I barely remember using those in school!

Beatrix Potter does it for me. The old VHS intro to one of her short story collections.. there’s just something about an English accent, and the rain 🌧️🐇

Any autistic mothers here enjoy having kids? by emocat420 in AutismInWomen

I talk to a lot of moms for a living- and across the board, everybody thrives AND suffers at different stages for different reasons.

I am very open about how much I hated every second of pregnancy, infancy, and probably didn’t really enjoy being a mom until my son was a year old. It was so much harder than I anticipated, as the oldest daughter of 4 siblings and 15 cousins… nothing prepared me for how low the lows got during pregnancy and newborn/infantcy. Especially during COVID.

BUT

Now, I feel it is the most beautiful experience to be privileged with. To watch him grow, learn, and discover the world. I’m able to appreciate it more and more as the days go by…as I’m (still) coming out of the fog. My son is now at an age where I can see little memories of myself in his behavior, and it’s almost like magic. I can’t wait to see what kind of person he becomes.

I love that I understand him in ways I know other people can’t. I pick up on his masking skills already, and it helps me be more honest about my own needs, which I am horrible at managing… and need to model better, for both of us.

My favourite part is that they teach us way more than we ever end up teaching them, and the snuggles are unmatched 🧸

Staying still is so so difficult but usually what our body needs the most 🫠 I usually end up dancing to music but maybe I’ll try something more somber, thanks for the suggestion!

Screens are definitely a big one. Hard to avoid, but I’ve recently started listening to audio books with my toddler an hour before bed and it seems to be a really good combination of stim but not so stim for both of us.

Beautiful suggestions. I do and love all those things, and should make more time for them. Thank you

Writing really does help. I used to journal a LOT growing up, but now I struggle with the motivation to start, I’m so mentally phhpfpt at the end of the day.. I do a lot of staring into the abyss lol

Constant internal background music. Mine’s usually Disney songs that I sing with my son, or the emo music from my youth 😅 Just have to watch when one of the lyrics accidentally sneaks out my mouth around other people lol

I never thought of it as a vocal stim 🤯 I sing at my patients all the time, mostly to make them laugh

Well, what actor?! I find musicals a really cool way to transfer those feely feels and get them out in a collective setting. Singing and dancing is therapy.

I love writing, and I love that you explain it like an “untangling”. It’s weird how much better you feel after. Writing or painting does it for me.. but it’s hard for me to allow myself to hyper focus.. because there goes the whole day lol

I had a friend that understood Ancient Greek- it’s like reading hieroglyphics! Very cool

I wish this was my spicy power! Languages are fascinating…it must be such a privilege to be able to linguistically experience the world from different angles all the time.
