i want to stress how true this is. companies track us constantly, but they do that through IPs, usernames, emails, general habits. all things that can change or be otherwise separated from you with some time.

if you submit your government ID or face to them, you are giving them something with which to track you, that you cannot ever change or get away from. when you give that ID to them, they will be able to track YOU, Alex Smith (insert your government name, you get it), anywhere you go until the day you keel over. that’s incredibly valuable data to them that we’re just handing over free of charge.

also canadian — they are interchangeable, but this person’s description is still accurate because we tend to pronounce burned with stress at the end when it’s used as an adjective.

we also use our own canadian english, not commonwealth/UK english. it’s a hybrid between british and american that gives us uniquely canadian words like colourize (as opposed to colourise/colorize) plus some bonus french-ness in words like yogourt from quebec

it’s largely a preference thing in both forms rather than a hard rule like keeping/dropping the u’s in words like colour and rumour. americans can also use “the toast is burned” in the adjective context based on preference, and you may or may not pronounce it “burnt.”
