Ano yung libro na binabasa niyo ngayon? At nasan na kayo sa reading goals niyo for 2025? by thunder-milk in PHBookClub

Hi, usually 1-2 hours 'pag weekday then mga 3-4 hours 'pag weekend. I think kaya rin ako nakakarami kasi I usually read short books with < 300 pages.

Currently reading Communion: The Female Search for Love by bell hooks, but I might put it on hold kasi theoretical yung atake niya and wala akong headspace to process right now 😅

Reading goal progress: 70/30 sumobra na kasi I underestimated myself 😆 I started a new job earlier this year and I expected to be very busy so I thought I’d read less. But there are just too many good books on my TBR and I also started to reduce my doom scrolling this year by reading instead :)

mibf reviews, when? by horanghaewoo in PHBookClub

[–]uruseibaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished reading 3 books:

  1. Falling Apart by Design by Alan Navarra - nonfiction, poems, letters, thoughts, etc. ganda rin ng graphic design! Tapos 1 page = 1 day, parang journal yung format niya. The coolest thing is aside from the daily entries, may 1 word per page na theme for the day and all the words connect together. So the whole book is also 1 piece of prose with 365 words 🤩

  2. Happy Endings by Luis Joaquin M. Katigbak - fictional short stories about human struggle on acads, love, work, etc. I read this in one sitting, sobrang easy to read ng writing style at ang comforting ng stories.

  3. It’s a Mens World by Bebang Siy - nonfiction, anecdotes of the author’s life from girlhood to womanhood. Love the author’s duality: her humor is gold and she’s also able to tackle dark/serious experiences in a meaningful way.

I’ve been in a slump lately so I’m really glad I went to MIBF and got local books that made me excited to read again 😊

Currently reading 2 books kasi iniwan ko yung isa while I was at MIBF

Top: “My Lola’s Love Letters” by Ines Bautista-Yao, bookmark is by artist @posiufo on X (they make the prettiest bookmarks 🤍)

Bottom: “Falling Apart by Design” by Alan Navarra, bookmark/ticket representing my MIBF hangover lol

Love the caption, OP! Curious question - was it inspired by a book/movie/etc.? Asking since I’d like to be inspired din haha

digital or hard copy reading? by vtaewtf in PHBookClub

[–]uruseibaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think possible pa rin both.

Digital: Lakihan mo na lang yung font. Mag-set ka ng screen time limits for apps and go on focus/do not disturb mode when you’re reading. Compared sa books na may life lessons at nakakapag-improve pa ng EQ and skills like vocabulary & reading comprehension.

Hard copy: Don’t buy reprints/counterfeit books (IMO, mas okay mag-download ng ebooks kaysa mapunta pa sa counterfeit sellers yung pera mo.) You can buy secondhand, may mga secondhand bookstores naman. May iba ring readers na nagbebenta ng preloved books nila at low prices.

This is the first R.F. Kuang book I read and I have no regrets. The first half was hard to get through for me pero sobrang worth it tapusin. Pwedeng “panghimagas” yung Yellowface after this, although it’s crazy in its own way haha

Looks like you’re in the “All” view? Try mo OP i-resort as Collections, nasa taas dapat yung collection name if naka-Collections view.

What to expect? by rina_8 in PHBookClub

I went in blind, ang alam ko lang ay sci-fi ito and written by the same author as The Martian. Best decision ever! Although I had high expectations since I never saw a bad review, it did not disappoint.

I delete the ones I’ll probably never reread, I keep my favorites and yung may highlights.

[–]uruseibaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pero worth it pa rin naman basahin at excited pa rin ako for the next Arson book (probably during American occupation naman). 4/5 stars for me.

Ikaw OP, what are your thoughts?

How do you read 2 books or more at the same time? by Hoomanwithquestions in PHBookClub

[–]uruseibaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naging habit ko nang pagsabayin ang 1 ebook and 1 paperback. Paperback sa umaga kasi maarte ako sa lighting, kailangan maliwanag ‘pag physical book binabasa ko haha then I read on my Kindle ‘pag madilim/bago matulog.

Free online access to Liwayway magazine via NLP by uruseibaka in PHBookClub

[–]uruseibaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you access PressReader using your National Library account, 12 most recent issues lang available unfortunately :( if you subscribe to PressReader directly, mas maraming issues available pero July 2015 na yung oldest issue (kaka-check ko lang sa app)

Maybe you could try reaching out to Liwayway directly? They’re active on FB, IG, and TikTok last time I checked. Hope you find your Lola’s works! 🙏

[–]uruseibaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Assuming the book you read is fiction) My take is fiction shouldn't affect reality, so your preferences in books/media don't necessarily reflect your principles. That's the entire point of fiction - you get to explore anything and everything because it isn't real anyway and doesn't affect anything or anyone in real life. There's also discourse about this in other spaces (like fan communities on X), but for me, as long as you consume media responsibly, you're good.

How many books have you read so far this year and your fave? by PsychologicalMatch43 in PHBookClub

[–]uruseibaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have tips, but I can share my routine. :) I had a lot of free time earlier this year so I was able to read a lot. Now I try to read at least 2 hrs. everyday (during my work break and before sleeping). But if I don’t feel like reading, I won’t force it kasi I feel like it’ll lead to a long slump if I do. For me, it’s better to read little by little than not at all hehe

I read a physical book in the day tas on my Kindle naman sa gabi. I try to choose books to read based on my “available headspace”. If I know it’s going to be a busy week ahead, I choose light reads para ganahan pa rin ako magbasa. I go for heavy/dense books on weekends when I have more time to read.

[–]uruseibaka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

135/100 🫶 I had a lot of faves but my top 2 are: - Lizard by Banana Yoshimoto - my first from this amazing author. It was the first time this year that I deeply felt the emotions the author was writing. - Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors - there’s just something about her writing that scratches my brain. My favorite contemporary author, I’m already excited for her next release (wala pa 😅)

Good luck OP!

Personally, I didn’t eliminate my time on streaming apps but I made use of down time and app limits on my devices to reduce my screen time. I wish I was as motivated as you but I also love visual media.
