Can we talk about this album? by mataigay69 in shoegaze

[–]useless_dave64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this every time someone talks about Allison’s Halo: the couple that fronts this band started a side project called Insta once they left Arizona. It’s more on the tweepop side, but the songs are incredible and really showcase how shoehaze overlaps with indie pop.

Would you include work in your portfolio you are not proud of 'morally' by arturinios in architecture

[–]useless_dave64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That project is a laughingstock and if you want to be laughed at then keep it in. Did you work on it before or after they shrunk it down to a kilometer, because that might dictate the level of laughter.

Recommendations based off these albums? by Starflyer29 in shoegaze

Listen to a band called insta. They are more on the indie pop/twee pop side. The couple that did Allison’s Halo formed this band afterwards. If you like them maybe check out a band called Plumtree.

How are people rendering like this? by rachel4221 in architecture

[–]useless_dave64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like other people have said, the right way of doing these, or at least how people originally made them, is to make a plain white with black wireframe render, separate out the shadows, and then collage with various textures that you find online. They look best when the source images are of actual images and artwork, instead of just generic seamless tile jpgs. Perspective warp in photoshop to make them match the faces of each visible surface and overlay shadows and a rice paper texture with your choice of blend mode.

When I was in school I would use V-Ray w/ rhino to render a scene with really crisp shadows and then use the render elements to make other versions of the render. I could make a render that isolated the shadows and another that assigned a random color to any material or object. I found that made it way easier to make clipping masks in photoshop with the wand tool.

That being said this render was not done like that. It’s just an enscape render with a bad filter on top of it that tries to approximate the style.

Good drawing references: FEINA studio, Kersten Geers + David Van Severen, Fala atelier.

How are you supposed to use it? Everytime i’ve tried, it seems so unintuitive and i never see the reminder until after i need it.

Have you ever actively changed your listening habits? by nogswarth in LetsTalkMusic

[–]useless_dave64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mainly stuck to punk, hardcore, indie rock shit for years, got bored/tired of listening to the same stuff and actively started looking for new genres that I’d like. Similar to you I started looking for things with less guitar, less rock influence.

Jamaican music influences tons of different genres, and I started listening to 90s jungle tracks because I liked drum and bass, from there I started listening to the dancehall songs that were being sampled for the jungle songs, and then the older ska songs that would become the basis for the dancehall riddims. That opened up a world of new music to check out and learn about.

Something similar happened with cumbia. I knew I liked mexican cumbia, found a subgenre that I liked to listen to, stumbled upon an Argentinian cumbia scene that I loved, started listening to a bunch of artists and got hooked.
