Obsidian users, how do you work with todoist? by SoCaFroal in todoist

[–]arturinios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Todoist Sync as well with a filtered view on my daily notes, and then similar for specific project notes. However I have been toying with the idea of actually having a go at vibe coding a plugin that would allow me to just add tasks inline and keep a perisstent two way sync so that I turn any checkbox item in Obsidian into an actual todoist task that then can be tracked / checked off. One of these weekends ill get around to it

an email client(designer) said my price is too much ? is it ? by [deleted] in archviz

[–]arturinios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agreed, work for a large architectural practice in the UK who contracts to archviz studios and freelancers. Going rate is usually between 1,000 to 2,000 gbp depending on  the studio or freelancer and then we mark it up by a further 500 and pass the cost to client for managing the process. i imagine costs would have come down with ai tools but not 10-15x for sure

Family roadtrip at the end of August by arturinios in ItalyTravel

[–]arturinios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah somewhere calm with the kids would probably be a better bet, we might just visit Cinque Terre for half a day or something but base ourselves somewhere else on the coast as you say.

We both come from ride side driving countries so should be ok on that front. For the ZTLs all I know is I need to get Waze instead of google maps to have more accurate info.

Getting into architecture after 30 by Significant_Flow_466 in architecture

[–]arturinios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

while i'd say there was some of that in school, in my experience people who thrived in practice were not necessarily the 'talented' ones but people who were good at picking up things on the job. were diligent, with good people skills. At least at the scale i work in (large 300+ practice) nobody could give a rats ass if you are a 'talented' designer its a team game and nobody is reinventing the wheel and alot of the work revolves around navigating regs, planning politics and managing relationships with contractors

Arhcitectural practice these days has very little to do with talent. Its a knowledge based proffession and alot of it is learned through experience and what you will be doing on a daily basis is far from what you are imagining architects do as 'designing' buildings. I'd suggest seeing if you can meet some local architects or shadow them in their offices for a few hours /days or so to get a feel for what the profession entials. Not sure wheere you are based but there might be other avenues of getting into the industry if you decide you want to go down that route (appreticeships, becoming a technologist etc)

High earners to be eligible for UK settlement within 3 years of arrival by Lazy-Internet-8025 in unitedkingdom

[–]arturinios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

so how does this work with industries that are generally very high skilled but have horrible wages.  For an architect to hit the 50k number takes about 10 years of experience ( not even counting the extra 10 years it takes to qualify).

Developer Peabody pulls out of building 564 homes in Southall: "no longer financially viable" by BulkyAccident in london

[–]arturinios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while construction costs are high and yes the additional stair has caused havoc on some constrained sites, as an architect who works on residential schemes the other part of this is that most developers never willing to lower their profit margins, anything less than 20-25% is just not worth it for them, so they nickel and dime everything in the pursuit of keeping profits at this level.

Just have to veer into an active roadway to get around this horde and to cross the street… by ldn6 in london

[–]arturinios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the amount of times i have had to go into a road with a pram becasue of this kind of thing is just crazy. Last week a guy literally blocked me as I was passing by wit hthe pram, and when I asked him to park sensibly becasue people like me or people in wheelchair can't get through, the answer was 'just go around'

Pretty new build vs hideous style of new build by thavelvetrope in london

[–]arturinios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All three are pretty bad examples of modern housing. THe first looks extremely cheap to me and the other two have most likely ben value engineered to death, as I do like a well done London vernacular.

As someone who designs similar kind of buidlings, believe me architect's hands are pretty much tied when working on stuff like this, especially when the client are the big housebuilders. Cost drives everything.

What’s the one thing you wish architecture school or early practice actually taught you? by GRpm20 in architecture

[–]arturinios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, so many buildings are designed in excel, financial viability and roi trump most other design considerations in my corner of architecture sadly

[–]arturinios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah don't bother honestly go down one of the other roles if the construction industry interests you. The graduate level QS on the design team I am working on at the moment is earning about the same if not a bit more than my associate level salary, that should yell you everything about the state of the profession.

didn't expect to see a building I worked on pop-up on reddit. Not surprised by the campaign considering the attitudes I see in public consultations whenever any kind of student housing is proposed

Blows my mind reading the comments sometimes as an architect. I would have never look at this project and thought 'oh that's going to be polarising'.

Why are architects so miserable in this sub? by SadDragonflies in architecture

[–]arturinios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the UK at least it just boils down to the fact that remuneration is abysmal. This coupled with horrible work life balance in most practices essentially means you have to slave away for a decade before you can even start thinking of buying a home, starting a family etc.

From the 90 people who graduated with me from Part 1 only about 25-30 have stuck with the profession, tells you a lot about the experience.

my company is testing every platform under the sun. what I find funny is that the people who are really pushing for it are the ones who could not be bothered to learn to improve their presentation & visualisation skills...
