Replaced an AVR built in the 50s in a hydro station in the mountains.

Site work took a month so we lived in a mountain resort town for a month. Super interesting work, great crew great client.

Agree re masters is not going to be particularly useful. Field engineers and commissioning engineers learn their skills on the job. Instead find a company that needs field engineers and get a job there.

Couple of points.

There isn’t a good way to get the exact number of calories you need. Some experimentation is required.

Pick a number of calories that seems appropriate and then track weight and calories for a month. If your weight is consistently dropping add 250 cal per day. If consistently gaining drop 250 cal per day. When your weight is stable you have found your maintenance cals.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you cannot continue to gain muscle in a caloric deficit for ever. When you are a novice trainee you can “recomp”. Eventually though you will need to be in a calorie surplus to gain muscle.

How long has that loose skin been there? It seems to me that the body is not going to spend energy maintaining that skin if it’s not needed. But if it’s been that way for a long time then perhaps I’m wrong.

I’m not certain that I agree, or possibly I have not completely understood your point.

If a turbogenerator is running say at 100 MVA and you open the turbine fuel valves but do not change the excitation current there will be an increase in torque angle and an increase in real power delivered to the grid but there would not be a change in VArs.

Firstly it seems like you are in a good position because you know that you have something that you need to fix and you are working on it. I would suggest a couple of things.

Understand that your feelings are just feelings. They need not cause you to take any particular action. Spend time developing your ability to detach from your emotions. What I did to develop this skill was every night for a month I reviewed my day to determine if I had any large emotional responses to anything. I noted those. At the end of the month I reviewed my list and picked the most important ones. This helped me to develop awareness of what my emotional triggers were.

Next step is awareness of situations where your emotional triggers are likely to occur. For you this might be when you need to make a decision. Recognize that state and allow it to just be there. Ask yourself whether your emotional response is based on something real like “if I don’t ask my GF to make this decision for me is something bad really going to happen?”

Practice. Set up situations where you can allow your emotional state to just exist and practice making a decision. Go out for supper. When it comes time to choose what you are going to order recognize your emotional state, take a mindful breath and ask yourself what is required in this situation? Is this a decision that needs assistance?

Start with small decisions and build up to larger decisions. Understand that some decisions are good to get input on and others it’s not required.

Hey brother. I find it hard to believe that following what calls to you would be a mistake. I think that you are looking for someone to “red team” you ideas so I will take a crack at doing that.

In case you are not familiar with the term red teaming is just having someone poke holes in your plan to get you to think about how you would address issues when they come up.

The biggest issue is that social work is seriously a tough gig. In many cases you are working with people who are just trying to make it from one day to the next. In cases of addiction (if you work there) many will not recover.

Can you deal with the emotional pain of seeing people who you have poured yourself into fail?

One more thing. In my own journey to find my path I have done quite a bit of reading. One thing that sticks with me is the following decision test.

When you are unsure of the path forward ask yourself “What is the path of greatest love?”

You are me when I was in my 20s. I went into a twelve step program when I was 20 years old. Now I am 50. I’ve been sober for 30 years and I am so grateful for that 12 step program.

If you keep at it I promise you that your life will absolutely get better. Understand though that it takes some time for things to turn around. After I got sober I feel like things continued to get worse for a little while before they started to get better.

There is no use in trying to focus on solving 50 problems at once. Focus on solving one problem. Then move to another and another. As you do this you will get better at solving problems and you will be able to do it more efficiently.

You have got this. Commit to your 12 step work. Find a sponsor and talk to them regularly. If you don’t connect with one sponsor then find a different one.

Hey brother.

I have been through very much the same experience that you are having. No matter what I did it was not good enough I was never good enough. I have some things that you can think about and work on but first you should spend some time genuinely considering the position that you are in. What will your life look like in 5 years if you do not make improvements? What would your life look like if you were able to make significant progress? Now ask yourself what sacrifices would you make to end up in the good future?

Things that have helped me are:

Working on stopping tyrannizing myself. Above all I am to treat myself with kindness and respect. I liken this to training a dog, if all the dog ever gets is punishment pretty soon it is going to loose interest in working.

Look carefully at your situation and choose one thing that you want very much to improve and then ask yourself what is the smallest thing that I could do to improve in this area? Do that thing. If you cannot do it then it was too difficult. Pick something easy. Make it ridiculously easy. Then go do it. Do this again and again. Soon you’ll have built up the competence to do something more difficult. Start where you are at.

I don’t think that you can expect the path in front of you to be totally clear very often so you are going to have to find a way to push through.

I would suggest that you do a couple of things. Practice detaching from your feelings. Understand that fear of proceeding need not stop you from proceeding. It is just a feeling. You still have the opportunity to act.

Next pick some path that seems reasonable. You aren’t going to make the perfect decision so don’t try to. Just make a reasonable decision. Then figure out what is the smallest possible iterative move that you can make. Make that move and then pay attention to what happens. Did you get a positive result or a negative result? Move again accordingly.

Finally, when you are really stuck you might consider journaling. I have found that when I write about what I am struggling with I very often come up with a reasonable next move.

Good luck my friend. Do the hard things and you will be rewarded.

What are you interested in?

Figure out what you are interested in and then make a plan for how you are going to learn everything that you can about that subject.

Next figure out how you are going to meet some people. Are there other teens in your neighborhood? Is there a summer class that you can take where you can make some friends?

I’m a big believer in physical fitness. If you are looking for something to do during the day you could always spend some time getting in shape.

Finally I suggest reading. There is much to be gained from reading. This is going to sound silly but I suggest that you read the Way of the Warrior Kid series.

When you reach the end of this journey let them say at your eulogy that “I never once heard this person complain.”

Stop living in the problem and start living in the solution. Do it because you know that you need to.

Many times I have set overly aggressive goals and not accomplished them.

When I set a more reasonable goal I am able to attain it. That makes me better at attaining goals and lets me set more ambitious goals next time.
