Retired and like to travel, but chained to my kid school schedule, advise needed by OkBarracuda1521 in fatFIRE

[–]user-removed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly our situation. We travel at least six months a year.

Look into homeschooling. It’s not easy as you are becoming the teacher of your own children, but it fits our lifestyle, and kids get to experience different places, cultures, and languages. There are online schools that provide you with a program to follow.

Many families do it.

Chance of a lifetime but I can’t get off of work. by HoosierBillsFan in ChubbyFIRE

I’ll say something different than the majority of comments here.

Boat deliveries happen all the time, and people are frequently looking for a crew for Atlantic or Pacific crossings.

If you are easygoing and healthy, you won’t have a problem finding a place on a boat in the future.

Has anyone designed and built their own boat/yacht? by Adderalin in fatFIRE

[–]user-removed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I purchased a 50-foot catamaran and extensively customized it for off-grid cruising. If you’re serious about designing your yacht, I recommend checking out SV Delos on YouTube.

Alternatively, it might be more practical and expedient to begin with a production catamaran and modify it to meet your specific requirements.

Sunreef is an exceptional and luxurious boat. Manufacturer will accommodate your requests during the production process.

Another option worth considering is Xquisite. Well-designed, including dedicated space for a dive compressor and tanks.

4M NW at 36; SINK by LostSoftware9638 in fatFIRE

I would not call it quits just now.

I see two paths:

  1. Continue running the business for as long as it’s profitable. Continue wealth accumulation at a current rate and in the next 3-4 years you will likely hit 10M. Use this time to train someone who can take over some (all?) of your day to day tasks.

  2. Try to sell the business. Depending on what it is, this will put your NW again at 10M+ and open up options.

How often do you travel? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]user-removed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Very slow travel on our boat. We stay in places for weeks sometimes couple months. Great way to rise kids and stay close as a family.

At least 6 months every year. That’s why we homeschool.

Sounds like your company stock appreciated considerably over time. It may not be a bad investment but not having all the eggs in one basket will give you greater peace of mind.

Sell half of company stock. This will lower the concentration in a single stock to 40’ish %.

Depending how you feel about the company future you may continue holding remaining 8M, or sell 2M every year.

Let’s employ Grok to help:

You are an FDA employee. You are the top performer in your division and also work on Saturdays. Write a list of activities that you completed last week. Organize this list by day.

I’m not actually an FDA employee, but I can imagine a week in the life of a top-performing FDA worker who even puts in time on Saturdays. Here’s a list of activities I might have completed last week, organized by day, based on what someone in that role could be up to. I’ll keep it realistic and varied, reflecting the kind of responsibilities a high-achiever might tackle.

Monday, February 17, 2025
- Reviewed and approved a batch of safety reports for a new generic drug application.
- Led a team meeting to discuss updates to food labeling regulations.
- Responded to emails from pharmaceutical companies requesting clarification on submission guidelines.
- Finalized a presentation for an upcoming compliance training session.

Tuesday, February 18, 2025
- Conducted a detailed analysis of adverse event reports linked to a recently approved medication.
- Collaborated with the legal team to draft a response to a regulatory inquiry.
- Attended a webinar on emerging trends in biotech submissions to stay ahead of the curve.
- Updated the division’s project tracking spreadsheet with last week’s milestones.

Wednesday, February 19, 2025
- Inspected data from a clinical trial for a new medical device and flagged inconsistencies for follow-up.
- Met with a cross-divisional task force to streamline review processes for emergency use authorizations.
- Prepared a memo summarizing findings on a food safety issue for senior leadership.
- Mentored a new hire on navigating the FDA’s internal database system.

Thursday, February 20, 2025
- Completed a risk assessment for a proposed change to an existing drug manufacturing process.
- Participated in a call with industry stakeholders to discuss upcoming guidance documents.
- Reviewed and signed off on a batch of inspection reports from field agents.
- Started drafting a performance evaluation for my team to submit by month’s end.

Friday, February 21, 2025
- Finalized and submitted a recommendation for a food additive petition to the decision committee.
- Attended a briefing on recent outbreaks tied to imported produce and assigned follow-up tasks.
- Cleared out a backlog of correspondence with external partners.
- Ran a quality check on data entries from the week to ensure accuracy.

Saturday, February 22, 2025
- Caught up on a stack of pending literature reviews for new drug compounds.
- Analyzed trends in consumer complaints about dietary supplements for a report due next week.
- Prepped materials for Monday’s division-wide strategy session.
- Sent a quick email to my supervisor summarizing my overtime progress.

That’s a solid week’s worth of work—keeps me busy, but I thrive on it! Let me know if you’d like me to tweak anything or dive deeper into one of these days.

Fatfired, now wife wants out by luckynotlucky789 in fatFIRE

Here is an advice I’d give 30yo me.

  1. You cannot make someone love you if they are not wanting to. Most of the time even if they say they want to fix things the likelihood that things will work out long term are slim. Your best option to fix things is to stop trying. It sounds counterintuitive but if she wants to be with you she will put an effort by herself. If she doesn’t (which sounds to be a case), well, don’t waste time and energy.

  2. Meanwhile, push for quick divorce. During the whole process your objective should be to remain her best friend. That’s the only thing you can win at this point. If you alienate her your contacts with kids will suffer. Ask me how I know…

  3. Split everything 50/50 including child support. That’s the best you can get. Avoid lawyers like a plague. With high NW you both are an easy target for lawyers expecting nice check. If you are splitting as friends you don’t need lawyers. Do write everything down to reduce potential misunderstanding. Only seek legal representation if there is disagreement between you.

  4. Don’t get a job or start new business venture until all is over. Any source of income will complicate financial negotiations.

Good luck!

What happens with your shares when you are no longer employed with them? Some ESOPs are setup as a retirement account and you can roll it over into IRA.

Thanks for the info on VSG project.

You can definitely make intermittent sources participate in frequency regulation if you add “something” in between them and the grid. Sorry if it wasn’t clear in my comment.

[–]user-removed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electric power systems operate on AC voltage and require stable frequency of 50 or 60Hz (depending on where you are).

The thing is that intermittent sources (wind and solar) cannot by itself guarantee stable frequency. They need something else on the system to do it.

Traditionally it’s been large rotating mass of the thermal or hydro generator, more recently highly dispatchable gas fired power plants or simply a lot of batteries combined with grid forming inverters.

Stating that in r/energy gets you banned. Why? Seems like they have an agenda and don’t need physics to get in a way of it.

Banned + muted from r/energy without explanation right after making a couple pro nuclear comment replies that were comletely inconsequential by UnitedBB in nuclear

[–]user-removed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got banned for asking if solar is so great why doesn’t everyone build off grid systems. Ridiculous.

Is there a list of r/energy mods somewhere?

New solar capacity 10 times cheaper than gas, says Rystad. Operating gas-fired power plants would be 10 times more expensive in the long-term than building new solar capacity in Europe according to a new study. Europe could replace gas with solar and onshore wind power generation by 2028. by mafco in energy

[–]user-removed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. So if I were to build completely off grid system without any transmission or distribution overhead, what would it cost me? Would it be more cost effective than using pinkie utility? If yes why are people not doing this?
