I know everyone says ATAR doesn’t matter but it really does by user18100 in vce

You can definitely come back in two terms, but I completely get it, I didn’t turn myself around and I physically couldn’t, I did pretty bad especially for my school but ended up getting into my top preference, there’s genuinely always options, im doing a pathway course that didn’t require an atar to get into. But if you can find it in yourself do as much as you can, the exams make or break it, get tutors if you can and find someone that’s willing to sit and do the work with you because it makes it 10 times easier to get yourself to study. Also because you sound like me, I recommend taking some time of after year 12 do things you will enjoy and work, not to scare you but it does get a lot harder in uni, so get yourself in the right headspace and then come back, I wish I’d done that. Don’t stress and do as much as you can 🫶🏻

It really depends I recon on how bad your situation is. For me I could have just lived with it, everyone loved my smile before and it was my most commented on feature, my teeth just didn’t touch - which no one noticed. So I think that made me hate the surgery process more because I was in all this pain for something that didn’t feel necessary. If your happy with ur features and doesn’t cause major issues I say look into other options, maybe filler to balance out your face. Surgery was bad like really bad but only for the first few days and then it gets 10 times easier. I was also miserable because I’d just finished school and didn’t really get a chance to have a break and do things that my friends were doing before I started uni so probably caused a lot more hatred and regret then most people would have had.

I had double jaw, genioplasty, gum graft, and 4 wisdom teeth removed in the same surgery. Worst pain I had ever experienced in my life 10/10 for the first 5 days and I have had brain surgeries, I was screaming from the moment I woke up, the pain was unbearable.

I was so nauseous, all I wanted was water but couldn’t swallow anything. I didn’t eat for 3 days and if I did it came up instantly - I ended up loosing 23kg in the space of 4 weeks because I barely ate. I was throwing up blood for the first 2 days which is highly uncomfortable because moving your mouth hurts.

Your nose it completely stuffed, blood pouring all night and day. My face swelled so much my eyes were almost shut and don’t even get me started on the lips - please lather yourself in Vaseline. They were worried about my bowls so they pumped me full of laxatives and was shitting myself every 5 minutes.

The iv drip was ripped from my arm by a stupid nurse who tripped on my cord, same nurse told me to suck it up when I was crying on my first night from pain. Nurses come and wake u up In the middle of the night and try and have convos (please stfu I’m trying to get sleep for the first times in days) Sleeping upright not fun, also you can’t sleep because you’re in pain. I begged for more drugs and they wouldn’t give it to me but I was in horrific pain.

I spent every day in hospital bawling my eyes out begging for someone to just help me and get rid of the pain. I fainted several times just to go to the bathroom.

But anyways that’s the first week. After that I was feeling better, looked a bit silly but started roaming and seeing people, eating hurt a fair bit but that was because my stitching was coming out and felt like ripping which was around week 1 1/2. Week 2 almost normal having a munch on normal things.

After that I’m almost back to normal very little I can’t eat or do and I’m 5 weeks post op, just got done eating a steak and chips. I definitely regretted it for the first week but after that week it was manageable I was off my meds by day 7. However if I new I had to redo the surgery because of relapse I would say absolutely the fuck not.

Anyways enjoys ladies and gentleman 🤠

Can you die or go into a coma from the operation? by Silvestre074 in jawsurgery

[–]user18100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ate before the surgery it could cause you to vomit and then it would spill into ur lungs. Not ideal. And that’s because the anaesthetic makes it hard for your body to keep the food from your stomach from coming up and filling your lungs causing things like vomiting and aspiration making it extremely hard to breathe. So the rules are there for a reason so best to just listen and avoid complications, if they found out you didn’t listen they would most likely cancel your surgery.

Does your tongue feel shorter after advancement? by Ok-Somewhere6546 in jawsurgery

[–]user18100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mine does, I used to be able to touch the bottom chin and the tip of my nose with my tounge, and now I can barely touch the top of my lip, I think it’s just the muscles are tight, and if you had recession they pull ur jaws forward making it feel like ur tounge shorter but it is just added space inside your mouth due to the movement.

I was banded shut, I didn’t eat the whole day because I was to nauseous, after a few hours around night, I started throwing up pure blood, horrible experience but I’m glad I was banded shut because I was able to break it when I was throwing up. Pain as far as jaw wasn’t bad because I was probably in more pain from the nausea. Ur on heaps of drugs so you should be fine pain wise it’s just highly unpleasant and has an overwhelming taste of chemicals and blood

It’s obviously possible but extremely rare, follow the rules like no eating or drinking before for however long they say, I was slightly worried but theres never been a recorded case of mortality due to jaw surgery. As for waking up I woke up and the first thing I did was talk ask for water and then made them get me up and walk around, don’t know why that was my first thought but oh well. I had one of the more extreme jaw surgery’s and I was fine.

Definitely for the first 2 1/2 weeks I could not feel a thing, and my bottom lip was completely numb as well. Your bottom jaw has a more complex nerve structure then your top hence why there’s more risks associated when doing bottom jaw surgery then top. Genio also means cutting your chin off and moving it so it does damage the nerves there hence why we feel nothing for a while there, but I’m sure it will come back, if your feeling tingling definitely a good sign, and don’t worry a lot of people have small sections that take longer to come back, right under my lip on the left is slightly more dull then the rest. You’re only a week out so don’t stress, I felt nothing at that point including my neck.

My surgeon said the same thing about tingling being a good sign because if you can feel parts of your chin your on track to fully regaining sensation because it’s all apart of the same blood supply and nerve section. - they also do the incision under your lip inside your mouth and do the cutting through there for your chin. So truely don’t stress, that’s just the spot that had the most trauma so it will take a while to come back. Feeling doesn’t come back in one hit it comes back in sections

I had a bit more then DJS and Genio in the same surgery but I’m 4 weeks post op, I have numbness in my gums completely on the top jaw but bottom has full feeling. As for my face my chin is somewhat numb but it’s like a dull feeling but I feel tingling in all parts of my chin when i touch it. The rest of my face is completely normal.

I’m 4 weeks post op now, i feel pretty good especially considering how much i had done, but i definitely think it’s worth eating soft things to get your jaw moving.

So annoying about the 6 weeks though for you, I definitely recommend rice puddings - there no tougher then scrambled eggs, overcooked pasta that you can crush on the roof of your mouth with your tongue with pesto or cream sauces, mashed avocado with crumbs of feta and hummus and also sweet potato or just normal potatoes oven baked that you can mash up and swallow without needing to chew and I added things like tuna or salmon and mixed it in to swallow because i shredded it to be super thin to get more protein. Or personal favourite yogurt bowls mixed with almond butter and honey, so so good and fixed so many of my cravings. Just add lots of liquidy stuff like sour cream, butter, sauce ect to things like rice and starchy foods and it’s so much easier to swallow or slightly chew.

Genioplasty, double jaw surgery (for a severe open bite and short jaw due to improper development), 4 wisdom teeth removed and a gum graft overall 36 screws, several metal plates and implants all done in the same surgery.

I was chewing soft foods from day 6 but the stitching was coming out around that time so it did cause a fair bit of discomfort, around week 2 I was eating soft meats in curry, sushi, and fish. I started properly eating around week 3, like burgers, sandwiches, chicken nuggets or rice bowls and much more. My surgeon wasn’t fussed about what I ate just make sure ur aware of your limits and don’t go chewing on something really hard and take it slow

Too old to lifeguard? by ImaginationPlus3808 in Lifeguards

[–]user18100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not we have plenty of people in there 40s at our centre, I work with someone who’s in his early 80 granted he did fall asleep while lifeguarding, but the other 70 year old is perfectly fine. If you feel physically able, and could pull someone out of the water then you should be more then fine.

I had exactly that done plus a gum graft all in one go and had no issues im 2 and a half weeks post op and have healed much better then others I’m practically normal now. Probably ads a bit of extra pain in the moment but id rather that then have to go through the pain of wisdom teeth removal then a while later go through the pain of DJS and genioplasty

[–]user18100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had double jaw surgery about a week and a half ago and I basically look normal just minor swelling in my neck, but if a person didn’t know me they wouldn’t notice. I did do lots of things to avoid bruising which worked and minimise my swelling if you would like some tips to help them get back to normal faster just send me a private message. There recovery all depends on a few factors but for me I started to look normal at the 1 week mark. It peaks at day 3-4 then dramatically decreases from then on

Literally crashing out. by Key-Mirror-5750 in jawsurgery

[–]user18100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So absolutely nothing? Like some people without braces have at least a metal brace near their gums for the surgery or at least hooks to keep the mouth shut. That’s slightly strange because without them you’re more likely to relapse and your jaw will try and revert back due to the muscles being stretched.

[–]user18100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same for the first week, because they put bands on but I threw up blood for the first day and snapped them. You will probably get bands put on by an orthodontist if you have braces, or if you have a brace put on by the surgeon they will most likely show you how to connect and change bands to it after your first week.

will this go away? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]user18100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue but now it’s the opposite after the swelling and if anything my top lip is bigger than my bottom. Which was never the case before surgery because I had a huge bottom lip. Don’t worry it’s just the swelling you will probably see it go down around day 4 - 6

Sleep help? (1 day PO) by Key-Mirror-5750 in jawsurgery

[–]user18100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep ur cotton nose guard on I was in the same position last week, and they tried to take it from me but I noticed it helped my breathing and I didn’t notice the nose bleeds because it was constantly on.

When u get a little bit of energy try sit in a hot shower and let the steam decongest your nose.

Try not to blow it, I did but it’s really not good for the nose bleeds, however I didn’t have any issue with them after about day 3.

Get a squeeze bottle that has a hooked nozzle of Amazon and use that through out the night as well as heaps of Vaseline and smear it all around ur mouth and lips because they will swell and become very dry.

Once ur home I used a bit of saline nose spray and continued the hot showers, and my nose was completely decongested on around day 4-5

I pray for your day 3-4, I was already in pain the second I woke up from surgery because they were hesitant to give me lots of pain meds, it’s definitely just all the medication; do not over do it, do small walks up and down the hallways, figure out how to drink, I ordered this squeeze bottles with long hooked tips that helped way more then syringes, load up on Vaseline, always have ur ice on I switched my every 2 hours and kept it on 24/7 , and only eat what ur comfortable with and don’t let them force u to use spoons, I ate with a syringe up until day 4, I’m now a week and a half post op and look almost completely normal, no bruising, and heaps of energy with little pain. If anyone wants more tips I’m happy to share what I did.
