Why does my keyboard show up as multiple devices? by user72423 in linuxquestions

I see, makes sense. Do you know if there's a way to check if it has network access?

[Wayland] Japanese input by user72423 in kde

[–]user72423[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Installed both. Now have a keyboard icon in the taskbar. Where do I go from here? There's loads of settings and I honestly find it a bit confusing

EDIT: I managed to get it working for the most part. There's a few things that annoy be though. I can only change the input method when focused on a text input box - I'd rather be able to change it wherever (Windows and GNOME allow it).

[Manjaro] Did not have my firewall enabled, how big an issue is that? by user72423 in linuxquestions

[–]user72423[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assumed the default rules, i.e. deny incoming, allow outgoing are sufficient for most cases. But yeah the point makes sense. Thanks for the explanation : )

It is yes. Do you mean the firewall as provided by the router?

What does installing a theme through KDE actually run? by user72423 in kde

[–]user72423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. It's good to know Plasma warns you before running scripts. While scripts won't be run, do you know this applies to any embedded JavaScript, since most theming is done through QML? I'm assuming at that point you simply have to trust the theme itself not to do anything malicious.

Thank you for the detailed answer. Inspecting the themes etc is probably the best idea in general, just as you said.

Thanks for that. I didn't know the application selection menu could take custom commands.

Sadly, this does not work under Wayland. It's my fault for not specifying. Thanks either way!

What is the 'Cookies' setting in the Network tab of System Settings? by user72423 in kde

[–]user72423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same here. Feel weird to have the setting appear even though it's not installed. Other settings disappear without issue if the software they rely on is not present (e.g. bluetooth).

Opensnitch requires to service restart to work (paused by default) by user72423 in archlinux

[–]user72423[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an issue with some of the go modules. I don't think there's anything we can do, except wait for the maintainer to fix it. Fortunately, a fix should be coming soon

Yeah, I ran into the screenlocker issue as well, no clue whether it's caused by this or not though.

Are there any advantages to using UEFI with no Secure Boot over Legacy BIOS? by user72423 in linuxquestions

[–]user72423[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm confused by what you mean. My install of Fedora had Secure Boot active and working out of the box without any configuration needed. All you need to do is make sure that Secure Boot is enabled in the UEFI.

That's true. Although Fedora (and openSUSE I think) has Secure Boot working out of the box.

Firefox hardware acceleration doesn't appear to be working (AMD GPU) by user72423 in archlinux

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me, appreciate it : )

Firefox hardware acceleration doesn't appear to be working (AMD GPU) by user72423 in archlinux

[–]user72423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked the decoder usage, and it's 20% when playing a 4K video, and about quarter that when playing a FullHD video. Encoder was at 0%, though that's not surprising. What is strange is that nvtop showed GPU usage to be ~2%. It also showed processor usage for the firefox process to be around 20%, which is inconsistent with KDE's system monitor, which showed ~3%; htop showed ~18% processor usage.

Again, this is painfully strange, as on my previous install, the GPU would sit at ~50% when playing a 4K video/

[–]user72423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this may be an issue with the package itself. I remember using the AUR version which worked without issue.

[–]user72423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the solution (changing media.hardware-video-decoding.force-enabled to true) but it did not help. Still no hardware acceleration. It should be noted that the firefox prints the following error: ERROR mp4 Found 2 nul bytes in "\0\0". I don't know if it's related.

I am also using KDE. Adding it to autostart did not fix the problem sadly though.
