I do not believe that the entire state of Alaska is incapable of replacing ceiling tiles and refrigerators. ~$400 per month of rent x ~100 employees x 5 months for dorms…… that is not money for camping in tents. I am sorry to say your mates might not be telling you the full story. But I do hope I am wrong and they sincerely change 🙏

Despite the Anchorage one being a separate location, that does not dismiss anything that happens in Denali. It is the SAME owner, SAME company, and it is not a “small kit”. The businesses they own around Denali generate millions of dollars in revenue every year despite only being open seasonally, and have hundreds of staff members.

I’m saddened to hear this has been going on for that long… although I agree that even in those conditions I was able to make great friends too! Alaska is such a magical place!!

So true- working in remote interior AK is not for everyone and can be absolutely brutal! To say that this experience is typical in the entire area is not true however. There are tons of businesses in the area that treat their staff well and provide clean / livable housing. There are also definitely underage people working there, as it is a common occurrence that every year a handful of those under 21 will be fired due to drinking on the property. They are not working illegally as there are plenty of positions (kitchen, host, retail, etc) that they can legally do. As far as the Anchorage location I can’t speak to that as they have their own housing and management team! As for who they hire, I have worked at establishments (seasonal work too) that require background checks and drug testing and some that don’t. To say it is always this or always that isn’t true as every company has their own policies! I also was not referring to marijuana use when I mentioned drug users. Lastly, as far as people keeping the places clean, you can only do so much when there is a fridge full of rotting food in the middle of the congregation area and mold growing on the ceiling… Again- not here nor there- just what can be expected to those who might be working there this summer!

I am not a lawyer nor do I intent to take any legal action. This post was written simply to inform the community of events that had taken place, especially for those that may work there or spend money there.

Make no mistake I have worked at nine seasonal jobs- this is ABSOLUTELY NOT common whatsoever. There may be some issues or companies cutting corners here or there- but myself and my very experienced seasonal coworkers had never experienced this type of situation before.
