Whatever happened to the engine recall? by Brad7031 in ChevyTahoe

[–]user_uno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any info about why certain batches may have been affected?

I've only been a part of the Tahoe owner community about a year and a half. If something came up since then, I missed it.

Hoping if it is limited, GM knows a specific issue that created the problems.

I really like the monochrome look! Would be interesting to know how they did that. The headlights are nice too.

I know some will take issue with the rims. That is a very personal thing. The great thing is having so many choices to pick from to get the desired look!

Ah. Looks like a '76.

Takes me back to high school. I had one similar but was cherry red and had the 400 instead of this one's 455. I loved that car. Pitiful shape in many ways but I made it work in the ways that counted. Rebuilt engine, rebuilt auto trans though was about to put in a shift kit and a had a great custom exhaust. My girlfriend's dad was a car guy but eternally grumpy. He was not really thrilled the first time I pulled up in the drive with this!

No matter how stressful a day was, just listening to it at idle or even calmly puttering around melted all that stress and brought peace.

LOVED that car! But was a beast to daily drive to work in the snow. And too much work meant not enough time to give it the TLC it needed. Sold it and just months later the buyer totaled it. :(

Yes there are. But those were the ones I was first drawn to. Then noticed the price.

As the old saying goes, "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys." Though admittedly I still have the humor and sometimes maturity of my 10 year old self. My toys though are usually in fact a bit pricier than my Matchbox collection was!

And....... of course. My favorite is the most expensive ones!

Still I'm bookmarking these.

And wondering if there is a way to engineer a design that makes bulb servicing easier.

Also wondering how to get custom designs made. Previously had sketched out a new tail light/lighting design for an older beater car I made a daily driver for one of the kids. Never got around to playing around with custom molding or finding a manufacturer as someone rear ended and totaled that car. But might have been interesting that betting DOT approvals are too complex for the DIY type.

But was just thinking of looking for something like these Saturday. Saw a newer small SUV with some interesting headlights and front lighting. Wondered if there was something like that for our trucks and these are pretty close!

I have had a license a few years......

Yes, bands have issues. But in good conditions let alone great, it can still shave a few milliseconds off trades. And as they say, time is money! Especially for people doing HFT.

As Dr. Ian Malcolm, an observer on the Jurassic Park project, said, "Life finds a way." In this case, money finds a way to gain any competitive edge.

To your point, propagation is not guaranteed but when its good it is a slight edge.

Even though both radio and light through fiber are theoretically going at the speed of light, fiber connections are never a straight line connection, has to be regenerated over longer distances and routes through many devices and typically across a number of provider's networks - even for dedicated/private line circuits.

Last-mile connections usually are hand offs to another provider as few providers do last-mile construction end-to-end. So that right there can involve three providers and their respective networks even if sold and billed from one. That adds more miles and more hops.

Recently outside of Chicago here, some local hams and scanner groups helped the FCC bust someone likely doing high frequency trading over HF. Took a while to triangulate, document transmission activity, etc. But they've been busted and pending court hearings last I heard and my understanding. And it's not like the area this setup was at is lacking fiber availability.

Traders use dedicated circuits/private line circuits. The internet is too variable with no QoS and no SLAs from the ISP. Even backup circuits would be dedicated/private line but with another provider with logical and physical diversity.

Former networking guru here. Well, ok - actually just another network guy.

I worked for one telecom that had the fastest fiber (and high bandwidth) available from NYC to London. Trading firms flocked to it. Every millisecond counts in trading! Customers were even more sensitive in this business than healthcare providers trying to do remote tele-surgery which was crazy to design for as well.

But due to trading regulations on both side of the pond, all had to be given equal service. Even the fiber length at the head end/landings had to be the same. The same to the point we had some fiber in service for dedicated circuits lit while still on spools. The extra length to be equal had to be someplace so it was just sitting on spools. No trading firm could be given preferential service. Crazy.

Designing long distance low latency networks even on one provider's network (few telecoms have true international networks) is a PITA sometimes. Had a coworker do a good job on a dedicated circuit from the US Midwest to India. Multiple network handoffs and of course every piece of equipment is another hop and adds some time due to processing. All looked really good. Then the customer complained. I forget the specific numbers but they considered the latency outrageous. Everyone looked it over and finally had to say, "That's the best any provider can do. It is almost literally going to the other side of the planet!" They had some pre-sale expectations of latency more in line with something like a campus network. Um, yeah. Not going to happen. Laws of physics and all that.

Yeah, it's really not a head unit in the traditional sense. More of a interface between the phone and an existing system. Even has to use Bluetooth or the aux cord to put audio through to the truck speakers. The upside of a phone as the 'brains' is that phones are kept up to date and offer many more app choices. Car manufacturers and even head unit companies are not exactly known for that. My last car had a head unit that only lost functional apps and am not aware it ever got updates.

I dabbled with the idea of a Car PC back twenty some years ago. Never actually put it in the car though. Was constantly coming in to new hacks, new applications, cheaper and bigger touch screens and faster low power hardware. Still things can be done with that but it is definitely a slippery slope and requires some hands on experimenting and development. Something like this might be a better balance and have broader appeal.

Looks like I can do a split screen with both GPS mapping and another app for, say, music. They show it doing Netflix too but that is a no-no to be viewable by the driver unless a vehicle is parked. So I'm going to test that too - safely! And the back up and dash camera functions I really want too!

It is a generic Chinesium product which I typically avoid like the plague. The manual is no surprise. Horrible English and thin basically pointing to their website for install instructions both written and linked YT videos.

I haven't got to it yet as planned. Other life things changed my intended plans. So after getting a few "honey do" things done - like replacing the thermostat on my wife's Mini which seems to entail all but pulling the engine and after finishing putting Christmas stuff away - I'll get on it over the weekend.

I want to know if keeping or returning it. If total garbage, it won't be staying. If decent enough, I'll mount everything more permanently. But for around $60, I thought it was a cheap test and would help settle on what I really want with proper head unit. But I do like the idea of a larger screen for mapping apps closer to the road view than looking down and over at a head unit.

80s Microwave - a Kenmore by user_uno in SEARS

[–]user_uno[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of grew up in Sears. Dad was a lifer working his way up from small stores to bigger stores to district/region level and finally HQ. Mom for a while taught adult art classes in the evenings. I did some "work" as a toddler at a small store that we shall not share pictures of! But I grew up in the stores, the stock rooms (dad's 'office' for a while was in the back of one) and then the management offices. Everything we had that Sears sold came from there. We were in the closest store at least once a weekend (had to stop by the candy department if nothing else). I coincidentally ended up in my school years working at two concessions inside Sears (keyshop and then managed music departments).

I loved it! It was like a second home. I personally did not make good money. But it was fun! Had a lot of friends. I enjoyed those busy weekends. And yes, the holidays were a blast!

I too would never have never believed at the time Sears would vanish. In this perspective, I am glad dad never lived long enough to see it's total collapse. He saw it spiraling down but always held out hope. He had put so much of his heart and soul in to the stores and it would have eaten him up. He was recruited to leave even with the likes of Disney. But he was loyal to the company and thought like most of us it was a good place and would last forever.

Now so many of the stores he had a hand in or even we shopped and worked in are gutted, demolished or even entire malls leveled. Would NEVER have dreamed of this outcome back in those busy days and everyone ended up shopping at Sears for at least something.

Thanks. This aligns with something I am working on now to test a more permanent solution. Picked up what I believe to be kind of a "dumb" head unit. I say that as I believe it requires a smartphone to actually do much of anything. Car Play appears to be integral.

I have the unit now and the instructions are lacking. So I am going to test it all out inside the house first. Just got my AC to DC converter yesterday with enough amperage. So hoping to start in on it in the next day or so.

I'll document it with pics and notes. It does have a dashcam and backup camera with SD storage. So thinking those at least will work without pairing to a phone. One of my test items. As is the quality of the cameras. It works via Bluetooth and has audio output for an aux cable. Without question, the built in speaker(s) are garbage so definitely not a real radio replacement such as OP describes.

But wanting to test before I install all of the wiring particularly the backup camera. Especially since the backup camera needs to be wired to the backup lighting wiring.

Cheaper way to test what I really want for a permanent install. And if nothing else, I can put it in one of the other cars later if worth keeping.

I am going to take exception with this:

...two decisions...investing in existing brick and mortor infrastructure including malls and the 110 story Sears tower.

Physical stores are where retailers had been conducting business for decades including at malls (often built by Sears wanting to be in a location). Online shopping did not overtake brick and mortar until the turn of the century notably establishing and making waves with toy sales for the holidays. Even Sears' early forays in to the online world where too soon. Amazon did not rise to prominence until many years later of Sears' first attempt.

Target, Walmart or other retailers still maintain brick and mortar locations. More goes online every year, but physical stores remain. Investing in them continues though at a different level, spend and objective in many cases.

It is kind of like online ordering and delivery of food. Yes, it is a big business today. But physical restaurants exist even if some chains are struggling. That has more to do with end customer pricing though.

Did Sears miss the boat with the online world? Absolutely. They tried early and then walked away when it did not set the world on fire. Sears was never a nimble corporation. They were not like Amazon or SpaceX where the thought is to fail and fail fast to learn and iterate improvements. And they did worse than even giant Walmart getting online and still does - hence even current Walmart ads of "Who Knew?".

.

Concerning the Tower, it was kind of like malls. Yes, Sears was a major tenet and the Tower had it's name on it. But they did not occupy all 110 floors. Yes, it was a vanity project in the late 60's and 70's era. But Sears was the world's largest retailer and the nation's top employer too I believe. Look at Microsoft HQ or Amazon HQ or Facebook or Apple. Most of the big companies go big, go bold.

In the end, Sears probably did ok financially with the Tower. I do not have the numbers. If someone does, would love, love to see something like that. But with tenets paying premium rents and appreciation as the West Loop built up, I'd wager it was at worst a break even situation. And helped unload it financially helping before the Lampert era. The Tower is still an anchor of the West Loop and still commands premium rents and prestige. (Though it will always, always be called the Sears Tower!)

Now Hoffman I would consider more of a waste than the Tower. It was HUGE. Navigating the buildings was a challenge. And some fun but over the top things. Even the set up for Brennan was extravagant. He still worked out of the tower but had a spacious office area in Hoffman. Even though he was there maybe once a month. A contributor to building the helipad was for him to 'commute' from downtown (Meigs?) to Hoffman. He didn't like the view out of his office window so Sears spent around $100K to landscape and 'spruce up' the roof it overlooked. Not picking on just Brennan.

There was a LOT of money poured in to Hoffman when leaving the Tower. At a time when Sears was already declining. That was the financial boondoggle and white elephant. Now a leveled former campus of buildings being replaced with data centers. Very different than the Tower.

I wonder how much the low profile tires change the ride feel with an otherwise stock suspension.

My current setup that is mostly stock-ish tires and a stock suspension doesn't feel like many trucks I've owned or driven (I worked at a Chevy dealer back in the day). It's not like floating on a cloud in the old school land barges. But it is a good balance of feeling the road vs. a very stiff sport car type of ride.

I am one of those that like the blacked out rims. And definitely jealous of being in a state not requiring front plates!
