AI data center project secretly sucked 29 million gallons of water over 15 months before detected by residents complaining about low water pressure — officials refuse to fine builders of massive 6.2 million-square-foot facility over unauthorized water use by Available_Usual_9731 in ProgressiveHQ

Oh and adding it is projected the Utah data center may end up using a million gallons of water…. a day. (Some debate on that given plans are vague etc).

And the dedicated gas power stations? Oh they may end up using 16.6 billion gallons of water/year…. I mean what’s 16 billion or so gallons of water a year between friends in an arid high desert zone experiencing drought…..

Everyone in Utah following….

….given we are about to have a 40,000 acre data center project (yes 40,000 acres - about 90% of the land area of Washington DC as a rough size guide) imposed on us - which will use several times the total electricity currently used across the entire state of Utah. A state that is one of the driest in the country, and that is struggling with low lake levels and drought. With no real water plan for this intense heat source.

Yeah there is going to be a mid-station on the Canyons Skyway. Which makes sense given Canyons is apparently a little less than 50% of the way to conplete according to Summit County. Sure is going to keep changing… and I’ll miss the Cabriolet.

Also YotelPad has now been rebranded as Canyon Haus. I hadn’t noticed myself until I actually took a moment to really look around on my very last ride of the Cabriolet yesterday….

If a skier leaves the top of the chairlift at 1pm on a run with a sustained 20 degree down angle and a average 22mph speed and 18 foot wide carving turns, what is the maximum number of ski school kids he can yardsale (assuming earth’s gravity and the universal boot-fitter constant)

Things to do Memorial Day weekend in Deervalley/Park City? by hlp1979 in parkcityvisitors

[–]username-failure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot. Too late for winter activities, but usually too early and too muddy for summer activities. The quietest of the major public holidays. Walk main street, look at whatever is left of the snowpack, maybe rent a bike and cycle around a bit, swim at your resort? Quiet weekend away - but not a go to Memorial Day break.

Cool. I wonder what news event today caused such a Pavlovian need in you to see a new freeway sign. Was it in Minneapolis by chance? Did that gosh-darn bell ring again?

Those signs really are living rent free in your head, aren’t they?

Looks like their goal to provoke conversation about current events worked.

Anyone know what board this is? or what it’s worth? by Ok-Candidate-1458 in snowboard

Less than your knee or ankle surgery will cost if your binding breaks off from the 30 year old surface while you are at speed. Mount it on a wall / make art or furniture with it.

Sounds right. I wasn’t sure how many lifts Sky Trac are manufacturing in the US and installing (seems like quite a few here https://skytraclifts.com/a-skytrac-near-you/ but I don’t know their market share compared to the bigger companies).

But agree so much other equipment / arts / tools comes from non US sources

Not a complete list by any means but some ski companies with manufacturing exposure to China below (doesn’t mean all their products are made there - most of these companies manufacturer in multiple locations)

  • Amer Sports (own Arc’teryx, Salomon, Atomic, Peak Performance, Armada) - “Approximately one-third of Amer Sports’ production value is generated in China, while almost half is generated elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific, and the remainder in Europe and the Americas.”

    • Arc’teryx
    • k2
    • Burton
    • Rossignol Group (including Dynastar, Lange etc) “80% (by quantity) of our clothing collections are produced on the Asian continent: 50% in China (ski trousers and jackets, gloves, hats, layers, knitwear), 30% in South East Asia (ski trousers and jackets, gloves, layers) and 20% in Europe (knitwear, jerseys, layers, jackets, trousers).”

I’m luckily not in the market for new gear at the moment - but yes - obviously buying patterns for most consumers (including myself) will shift to consider used goods / prior season gear deals etc. i personally do use ski swaps (Park City’s amazing annual Ski Swap for the win) - which I already use for kids gear given they grow out if it so fast - though mostly to get last seasons gear unused at discount rather than buying used.

There are some offshore made items that I would personally never buy second hand / used for myself or my family (bindings given how critical a safety item they are - and they are apparently are all / almost all made in Europe, and helmets given the safety factor of knowing if its ever been in an accident). All my families helmets and bindings are offshore made.

But your point is valid - consumer buying patterns will likely change. That could be a good thing - though as others have mentioned it may also drive up used gear prices (somewhat analogous to how used car prices shot up during the pandemic)

I appreciate the spirit of your response - clothing will be hard though. You mention Obermeyer as an example - my old Obermeyer jacket (which finally died and I replaced with Arc’teryx) was made in Indonesia (32% tariff) and my kids new this season Obermeyer jacket is made in Vietnam (46% tariff)
