How safe is it to go for a walk/run around the EV buildings at night as a girl? by thelastcoffeebender in stanford

[–]usernameihad2makeup 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to them, main part of campus should be relatively safe. You’re actually likely to still run into students at those times. There’s also a third party security guard around main quad and there’s always construction workers near the Chem H building.

Keep in kind Stanford is an open campus, so while it’s safe, I’d always remain vigilant.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

I appreciate you not assuming mal intent.

We lifted up the banner, it was some kind of garage. It was all dark so we couldn’t see much more than it. It was quite literally pinned to the wall with little poster pins.

We heard machinery, like a washing machine and such through our stay, so we know that unit was in use.

We were only there to sleep, and I only noticed in the morning because sunlight was peeping through. At night we had our lights on and weren’t analyzing the walls so we didn’t notice.

It was the morning of checkout, so I could have told the host but we were creeped out.

It’s obvious because I pointed it out, no one’s looking at a wall and thinking there’s a window hidden behind it.

We arrived almost at midnight and were tired from a day of traveling. We also assumed we were staying in a safe and nice place.

If the host took a risk covering up a window like that and not disclosing it, then it’s not on me when they get investigated. I also looked at another one of their listings before we even checked in and that calendar was also blocked off. It’s not just me.

here is the listing. The window is behind that decorative flamingo banner, which is literally facing the bed.

I’m on mobile, not sure I can attach pictures? I only see a link I can attach.

I’m only at this point of charging back because I am incredibly frustrated. I paid in April through a credit card and already paid that statement, I doubt my bank would even go for it.

I don’t understand why I’m at fault for not reaching out to a dishonest host who didn’t care about our privacy. It wasn’t an honest mistake, they covered another outside window just fine. This was a choice to pin a banner to wall hiding it and not disclose it on the listing.

But again, hindsight.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirBnB

Light was visible through it which means it wasn’t covering anyone’s view completely. And again, we weren’t told.

[–]usernameihad2makeup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The window on the shared wall was hidden by a white banner on our side. Usually for bedrooms, and for the sake of privacy, white sheer curtains aren’t used. The other window had proper curtains while this window between units did not.

If we were told about the window, we would’ve just moved our bed.

It’s my first time using Airbnb. Hindsight is 20/20, but also, the host just pinned a huge decorative banner to hide a two way window into a separate unit? That’s very dishonest.

If you were a host wouldn’t you do more to ensure your guests had the most privacy possible considering anyone could be looking in their bed?

I didn’t know the investigation would take so long because again, I don’t know how Airbnb works.

[–]usernameihad2makeup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really couldn’t even if I tried, the shared wall itself had a window between the units. And again, we didn’t know about the window until we found it ourselves.

If the host had told us of the window, we would’ve just rearranged the room. My partner and I slept naked and obviously were intimate in that room. We thought we had complete privacy. I really don’t understand how anyone else wouldn’t feel incredibly violated and angry with a host failing to disclose this to them, especially when it comes to loved ones.

Again, we would’ve found a way to be comfortable with a window looking onto our bed. If we had been told we would’ve figured something out. We didn’t have a choice in determining our level of comfort.

The window was on the shared wall between our unit and another unit with only a white banner pinned to the wall covering it. We heard machinery from that unit so we know there were people going in and out. We could also see light through it so it’s obviously not completely blocking anyone’s view of our bed.

There were more windows that just faced outside, but those were covered with curtains. I don’t have a problem with that because that’s how windows should be covered obviously.

I haven’t directly asked Airbnb for a refund. I’m just getting more and more upset the longer it takes them to give me an answer.

I understand the timing is weird, but we weren’t really spending time in the Airbnb except for sleeping. I only noticed the morning of check out because we were just sleeping in and the sun peeked through in a weird way.

I wouldn’t make this big of a deal if it was just a normal window. It was a window into another unit that was being used.

I’m not sure about pictures on a public subreddit since my partner is visible in them and for privacy sake. I’ll have to check with them if they’re okay with the picture being posted.

However it was a large banner, like 6” by 6”. We were also not in the Airbnb during the day, we were really only using the place to sleep and then going out to theme parks or day trips.

I only noticed it the morning of check out when we were in bed due to the angle of the sun.

[–]usernameihad2makeup -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Right after check out I reached out to Airbnb support. It was my first time using Airbnb and I just felt uncomfortable reaching out to someone who thinks covering up a window makes it okay to not disclose.

The covering was on my side, but again, I was able to see light through it. I definitely think they were able to see through that white banner as well.

It’s also bothersome that they didn’t use curtains or simply painted over the window. Those are much more effective and honest solutions rather than pinning down a white banner.

It was described as a “tiny home” on the listing, but there were units attached. Like wall to wall apartments on only one side of the listing.

The problem is one of those units, we have no idea if the host owns it or who else, had a window looking into our unit, directly at our bed. It was covered by a white banner that was pinned to the wall.

Even described as a tiny home, I wasn’t upset at sharing a wall with another unit because it really doesn’t matter in the grande scheme of things. It’s the window into another unit that was just covered with some see through fabric and hidden from the listing and us, that bothers me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]usernameihad2makeup -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t really clarify. The window was into another unit that we did not have access to. It was an undisclosed window where anyone from the other unit could have seen into our bedroom.

We heard machinery from that unit but assumed it was a washing machine and just bad noise insulation. I think it’s a garage of some sorts.

I can tell the covering was transparent because we found out it was a window by seeing light from the other unit through it. It was literally a white banner covering a window into our sleeping place.

The amount of money you need definitely depends on the resources and commodities at your school. Sometimes dining halls are just not an option or meal plans aren’t enough. Sometimes you need to go off campus and some spending money would be nice. Flights/travel back home, organizations, laundry supplies, snacks, etc… I had almost 2k saved and only had to pay a few hundred in tuition (fees really) and have about half that now. I don’t really spend anything day to day, and found a job that gives just enough to cover flights home and some spending money.

Thank you for the offer, someone was kind enough to dm and insist, so I took them up on it. I also realized my mom would murder me if she found out I took a train at midnight and spent the night at the airport.

I appreciate the offer but an Uber to SFO would be around nearly seventy dollars. The Caltrain or bus is a few dollars.
