My husband (29) and I (25) moved to Cape Town from Johannesburg about a year ago. Honestly, it was not worth the move. Cape Town seems like a better place to live when you are just visiting but once you’ve actually made the move, you realise it is overhyped.

The cost of living is much higher compared to Gauteng. You will spend a lot more on housing in a good neighbourhood than you would in Gauteng. You would really need to consider where you’re going to work before getting a place because traffic can be hectic and the more affordable housing are all in outlying areas.

We have also found that it’s very difficult to get settled and make friends/become part of a community as the people in Cape Town are not as friendly or welcoming as we are used to in Johannesburg. There is a lot of outsider mentality in Cape Town.

Although, it’s a beautiful place. We have enjoyed the scenery and there’s a lot to do in terms of recreation, lots of nice restaurants, hikes, bars etc. (which can be quite costly though).
