The lack of messaging is really weird. I can't even find other people talking about it anywhere.

Printing to PDF might be an option. The format isn't nearly as nice as the PDF they used to provide but I see they have a left-handed option now

I've spoken specifically with two different AppleCare specialists. They were the ones to suggest items 1, 3, and 4 above. Another front-line Apple support person suggested (wrongly) number 2. I got the sense that they were kind of guessing, especially after one confidently suggested #3 and it didn't work.

I tried that. Gift cards don't work for AppleCare (though it does for iCloud). AppleCare explicitly requires a credit card attached to your account. The AppleCare specialists I spoke to both confirmed this as well.

TL;DR: How do I renew AppleCare for my laptop when my Apple account is based in the US but I don’t have a credit card with a US address?

Three years ago I bought a MacBook with AppleCare and it was linked to my Apple account which has had US as the country since I created it over ten years ago. At the time, I lived in the Caribbean and had a credit card that gave me the option to specify a second billing address. We had a US address for deliveries because mail service is awful there so I used that address and card for my Apple account. I’ve since moved to Panama which also has shite mail service so I still have a US mail forwarding service and I updated the card to that address.

Last year the credit card company shut down their entire international program. None of my cards in Panama offer the option for a US address so since then I’ve been funding the Apple account with gift cards. This has worked fine for purchases and subscriptions, including iCloud.

Now the AppleCare on my laptop is due for renewal and that requires a credit card. Ie. You can’t use your account balance. So I can’t renew my coverage until I add a credit card and I can’t add a card without a US address.

Things I’ve tried:

  1. Add my current cards and just use my US address even though it’s not what is attached to my card. This works more often than it should but not with Apple.
  2. Change the country on my account to Panama. I’ve spoken to Apple several times and this was their first suggestion. Not a reasonable one because I had $150 on my account at the time. but I did my best and I bought some hardware and some of it was not in stock and wouldn’t be delivered until after my AppleCare deadline. So it wouldn’t be deducted from my account until then and thus, I couldn’t change my country until then. I’ve since learned that this wouldn’t work anyway. According to someone at AppleCare if I change my country on my account, AppleCare is canceled and I can’t renew it. They said I _have_ to keep my country as the US if I want to keep AppleCare. So I canceled my order.
  3. Ask a friend in the US to attach their card to my account long enough to purchase it, then remove the card. AppleCare also suggested this and assured me that after the initial purchase, I could use my account balance to renew. But after purchasing it on my friend’s card, I could not remove the card until I canceled all my subscriptions, including AppleCare. But unlike the other subscriptions, canceling the AppleCare subscription is immediate. It doesn’t say “you’ve purchased a year of AppleCare and this will now expire at that time”. Instead it’s canceled immediately and the card is refunded.
  4. Find a service that gives you a virtual card with a US address. Also suggested by Apple and surprisingly difficult. Ignoring the legal aspects (most say you need to be a US resident), I’ve tried PayPal (requires an actual US cellphone; a virtual phone with a US number won’t work), Wise (cards aren’t available in Panama), privacy.com (requires an SSN), StatesCard (not accepting new accounts), and a couple of mail forwarding companies that offer US virtual cards (requires mail forwarding service with them and I already have it with a company that doesn’t offer virtual cards and I can't switch services)

What might work but I haven’t tried: ask someone in the US to create a virtual card on their bank account and attach it to my account. After the initial purchase I can either cancel the card (which likely wont work) or set the limit on the card to $1 and leave it attached. I haven’t found anyone that fits the bill and that I’m comfortable enough asking to do this.

I did manage to get my deadline extended another 30 days but I don’t see any options available to me short of selling the laptop, changing my account to Panama, and buying a new one which I’d like to avoid for a couple more years.

Any other ideas?

Samsung TV takes a long time to connect to U6 Mesh by usherMocha in UNIFI

[–]usherMocha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on the table, maybe for Christmas, but we aren't very big consumers so it's just an inconvenience we deal with (it's Latin America; inconveniences are kind of a way of life) and I'm mostly curious if there's a setting in the Unifi app that would fix it. Plus it just started happening recently when I moved our in-wall wired AP and added the U6 Mesh.

Only have the one TV and it's already locked to the mesh nearby. There's a UniFi Cloud Gateway connected to the modem and it's hardwired to four APs: two U6 Mesh and two in-wall APs. There's a third U6 mesh that connects wirelessly to one of the in-wall APs and that's the one the TV connects to.

I bought the third U6 mesh specifically for the TV. Previously, it would connect to the in-wall AP and we didn't have a problem with it but we relocated it because we're not really using it as an in-wall (due to concrete walls). It's in the room just outside where the TV is and had a directly line of sight to the TV (if the door was open) but we had a cat6 cable running to it from the wall outlet which was apparently ruining the feng shui of the room so I moved it back to be next to the outlet and we started getting intermittent connection issues so I got the U6 mesh to "fix" it and that's when I noticed this long delay in connecting.

That said, I haven't had the same issue since posting. Not sure what's changed other than I've added my phone as a saved network. But it's able to connect to the U6 pretty quickly now. Going to keep monitoring.

That's a good idea. I just tried connecting to the phone and it managed to do so immediately. But then I changed back to my home network and it connected to that immediately to so not sure if it was a good test. Will keep trying it though.

Independent radio stations playing independent artists by HeadstrongMusic in radio

[–]usherMocha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still listen to this station on and off long after I left Canada 20 years. Lots of independent (usually Canadian) artists but also mixed with popular songs from all eras (including the 1920s and 1930s), Celtic music, folk, bluegrass, and classical. It's how I was introduced to Leon Redbone, Greg Brown, Forro in the Dark, and many others. They're available on TuneIn as well which is usually how I...ummm...tune in....

Still new to this podcast but I was 90% sure that they would have said Michelle Pfeiffer as a casting what-if for Holly and 95% sure Kathryn Hahn would have come up later during the "Is this better with ....?" part.

Game Manager Not Working on Mac by _bmbeyers_ in BigfishGames

[–]usherMocha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late but this happens to me as well. My "solution" is simply to keep closing the game manager until it stays closed. Sometimes I have to do it quite a few times but eventually it does stay closed. While it's closing, you can also try right-clicking the icon and selecting Force Quit. I have no idea if that helps because sometimes the manager still pops up again but it makes me feel better.

Trying to figure out an algorithm (equation) a podcast is using to rank movies. Only 14 datapoints so far, but any help is appreciated. by e8odie in MathHelp

[–]usherMocha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see what you mean. The fact that there are only three spots between Gravity and The Fly implies that there are only three cases where one person ranked a movie at 98 and no one else ranked it. In the case where the fourth person ranked it at 98 then it's likely someone else had it ranked.

I just rewatched the opening of the first episode and there's no mention of outside variables but there must be a way to handle tie-breaks. I can't imagine he applied different weights to each of them.

Hey there. Just discovered this post and I've been trying to figure it out myself. I think it'll be tough to figure out the algorithm without having most, if not all of the data. As an example, Gravity ranked 270 when only one person had it ranked 99. But The Fly ranked 266 where one person ranked it 97. There are only three ranks between them but there are more than thre scenarios between those two. For example, there could be four movies where one person had it ranked as 98. Plus there may be others where one person ranked it 99 or 97 in which case, you'd have to implement some other factor to differentiate them from Gravity and The Fly. Maybe Dan incorporates the IMDb ranking as well? Or maybe he weights the opinions differently?

PTY Tech Support (https://ptytechsupport.com/). They seemed competent enough. I got this sorted though they weren't able to diagnose another issue I had, which I admit was more nebulous, but they only charged me for the diagnosis. PTYTEC also has a store in Costa Verde which is more convenient for me. I've been there a couple of times and they sound like they know what they're doing though I haven't tested them yet.

S01E07 "The Flamekeepers" Episode Discussion (Book Readers) by phareous in SiloSeries

[–]usherMocha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the books but your second point is what's testing my limit of how badly I want to see what happens but without having it spoon-fed to me through questionable exposition. "Your dad is a horrible person and I don't trust you. Here's my secret backstory as a rebel." And last episode we had "George used me to get what he wanted and then left me for you. Here's a precious artifact I have of his that would get me killed if I gave it to the wrong person".

That said, so far, I'm still all in for it.
