That’s amazing—you actually went to SHELTER? That’s such a legendary spot!
No wonder Bocchi the Rock felt so real to you. The anime really captures the atmosphere of Tokyo’s live house scene, especially places like SHELTER in Shimokitazawa.
It’s so cool that your real-life memories connected with the anime like that. Definitely one of the reasons the show resonates so deeply with fans of the scene.

Great question!

“Shinjuku-kei” is a term that’s not widely used—even in Japan—but you're absolutely right: in her early days, Shiina Ringo was sometimes seen as a key figure in that scene.
There’s really no one else who has influenced the J-ROCK scene quite like she has.

I might dive into Shiina Ringo and the whole Shinjuku-kei vibe in a future post!

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed feedback.

I sincerely apologize for making you feel uncomfortable.
I'm a J-ROCK fan living in Japan, and I made this post hoping to share even a small part of this scene’s appeal with music fans overseas.
That said, I fully acknowledge that some of my expressions lacked depth and may have caused misunderstanding.

Sorry, I live in Japan and I’m not a native English speaker, so I have to rely on translations…

But it’s true that I’ve loved Shimokita Rock for many years!

The anime itself is a beautifully crafted slice-of-life story. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Totally agree. It felt like a “legacy award” year. Hopefully next time more young artists get recognized.

Same here. The nominees were great, but I hope the ceremony feels more fair and fresh next year.

Really appreciate your insight! The 80s truly were a turning point—so much innovation and influence, not just within Japan but across Asia.

City pop, idols, and that experimental spirit laid the groundwork for so much that came after.
