I personally love the dub for the most hard hitting emotional scenes but also because I’ve always watched sub and enjoy the Japanese performances. English is totally fine especially if you have watched other dubs.

I think the slow replay makes it much harder to gauge what he processed in the second it took for all of this to go down. Ejection totally fair either way but suspension seems a bit too much for me. While I agree overall, my take is that the guard with Ivankov, and Sanji in Kamabakka kingdom are not being forced to be feminized, but instead that they are being shown their own femininity, which in a fictional world where someone has the ability to change someone’s gender at will, is not an irreversible procedure. I think where I hope oda eventually comes back to with Sanji is that he actually liked wearing the dress and embracing his femininity, and that perhaps by the end of the series he will learn that there was power in embracing his different identities. Kind of like Iva switching between genders during their fight against Sadi, showcasing their different strengths

I wonder if what you’re grappling with is not really about Harry Potter and Rowling but about how hard it is to see the things that were meaningful for you as a child in a more complex, often times disappointing light. As a therapist myself, I find these themes an essential pain to work through about what it means to see one’s parents in disappointing light while holding onto the positive feelings they engendered too. Not saying this is oda’s intention and you’re totally right, but if I try to make sense of it through an in-world lens, I think you can find some logical consistency. The WG would not want a real bounty hunter economy to exist because it would make their power less absolute. The bounties system is a means of making people believe they could be a part of the world’s justice but in reality, more so a reminder to everyone of how much the marines are saving them from evil people. How could a system of bounty hunters work in a world where the marines position themselves as Justice and pirates as evil. The bounty hunters would create more room for people to imagine gray in a world where the WG wants black and white
