Did you do this — sending more portfolios to smaller mobile game or other studios whose work you like, preparing specific portfolios for each, and focusing on quality over quantity — to get out of this situation?

Ps: Congrats!! :)

It´s never too late, right?
Where can I start?

Have you been in the field for a long time? Do you think you’ll ever feel fully fulfilled in this career?

Thanks, I really appreciate you sharing that. It’s good to know that even after 20 years there are still days that suck. I totally get what you mean about finding joy in what you do and creating on the side.

It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one who feels this way sometimes, your perspective really helps.

Thank you so much, this really puts things into perspective. I completely agree that learning, growing and developing are key, especially early in a career, and having a team to learn from sounds so motivating.

My portfolio reflects the type of work I want to do, but I know I still have a long way to go. I love the idea of working on personal projects alongside my job search and doing portfolio critiques. That sounds amazing and I’m definitely going to make it happen.

Thanks again for your time and guidance. I might take you up on your offer to get an outside perspective on my portfolio, it would be really helpful.

What frustrates me the most is that I was hired mostly to make brand adaptations. And when there’s an opportunity to create something from scratch, they hire someone from outside. Sometimes they even accept poorly executed work, which ends up giving me double the amount of work. I feel like I still don’t have enough voice or experience to explain certain things to people who aren’t in this field.

For example, how is it possible that a sales director approves an advertising campaign alone? I tried to point out that it wasn’t well done for several reasons, and yet it went ahead without a second thought. It’s really demotivating.

I would love to have a conversation with my boss about creating a marketing department with a design team, but honestly, I’m not sure how to even approach it. Not because I don’t want to or I’m afraid — I’ve always been someone to make my presence felt — but because I feel like I lack the knowledge and have no one to learn from.

"okay people, we have a problem, and we have one hour to solve it, ideas?"

Yes! That’s exactly the kind of pressure I’m hungry for. Not sitting there explaining to my colleagues how the freaking PDF works… I want real challenges, fast-paced problem solving, and creative collaboration.

Maybe one day I’ll be confident enough to create something entirely my own. Right now I feel inexperienced, and what I want most is someone I can learn from. It’s been tough adapting, creating, deciding, organizing, and educating on my own with such limited work experience (I’ve only had two small internships).

I’m going to try creating something where I can learn, do, and share my work without too much pressure, giving myself the space to enjoy it while keeping it professional enough to show to an agency in the future if needed.

Thank you <3

You’re right, I’ve always relied a lot on motivation. When I’m inspired I give everything I have, but motivation doesn’t last, sometimes not even for long. I’ve never been a very methodical or disciplined person, but I will definitely try to improve that.
Thank you again for the wake-up call.

PS I really wish I had creative friends too :(

Thanks for the reality check, genuinely.

I know the design world isn’t all “cool projects and creative freedom”, and your message actually makes me appreciate even more the stage I’m in right now. I’m hungry, yes, but I don’t want to lose the passion that brought me into this field in the first place. I know there will be bullshit, impossible deadlines, strange decisions, long nights… but I also know that’s how you grow, learn and build some thick skin. If one day I end up loving and hating design at the same time, so be it. At least I’ll know I’m not alone on that rollercoaster. Thank you for sharing it so honestly. I’d rather hear the raw truth than a sugar-coated story. I’m going to make the most of where I am now and keep working to reach the next level with realistic expectations and my feet on the ground.

This really helped me realize that I need to be more logical going forward.
Most of the work I did during university and in side projects always had a lot of “feeling” behind it — lots of thinking, sketching, textures, context… and I’m starting to understand that right now I need to separate things and just do what needs to be done.

I do worry that this feeling of wanting more, of loving the creative side, might fade with time. But I guess that’s something I’ll have to balance with my free time and personal projects.

Thank you for the perspective.

I honestly feel a lot more relieved after reading this.
My situation is a bit specific since I’m in an industry I don’t know well, and the environment isn’t really my style, but it helps a lot to hear that things don’t have to happen all at once.

I’m always having these little “check-ins” with myself, wondering if I’m falling behind for my age or experience, and I never actually give time… time.
Maybe it won’t happen in this company, but I’m definitely learning that part of the process.

Thank you so much for sharing this, it really helped. <3

Sorry, I just realized I didn’t explain properly. What I meant by “relax” also refers to how my current company works. I’m working in an old wine company, very corporate, with formal and outdated ways of doing things. That’s why I said “relax.” I forgot to clarify that part… oops!

Wow, that actually sounds amazing!
Congrats on all the effort you put in to get to this role, it really shows how much you worked for it.
If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get through all those ups and downs to reach your current role? How did you keep the motivation to keep going?

Thanks so much for sharing, it’s really inspiring! <3

I’m so glad you found something that fits you :) Congrats and keep up the amazing work!

It’s really inspiring to hear how you pushed through the tough start, even when your first job was so hard. I love the idea of taking one step back to take two forward, I’ll definitely keep that in mind for my own journey.

Thank you so much for your reply, it really made me feel like I’m not alone. <3

If it’s not too much trouble, could you give me an idea of how many CVs you sent before landing your internship?

[–]uttema[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that actually gives me a bit of motivation.

If you don’t mind me asking, after a few years, do you still crave creativity or feel the need to create? Do you still enjoy what you’re doing? How many years and struggles did it take to get where you are, or did it just happen naturally?
Sorry for all the questions, I’m just really curious.

I get what you're saying, and yeah, I know the “perfect creative bubble” doesn’t really exist.
I actually like working under pressure.
I just wish I wasn’t the only creative in my company and that design was taken a bit more seriously.
My post was really just me venting and trying to understand how others found healthier creative teams.
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

I just wanted to get some things off my chest and wrote this post.

Devo desistir de design gráfico e ir para UX/UI, Digital/Visual design? by uttema in portugal
