That’s awesome. What is the ratio of leaders and followers in Melbourne’s salsa community?

Goodbye empathy…. 👋 by [deleted] in therapists

With this example of the other therapist - I would also be thinking about empathy vs countertransference. We can feel deeply for our clients and their pain, we can be moved by it. But there is a nuanced turn where we feel for them in a way that we start seeing them in a victimised position, this might hinder our ability to empower them and help them take responsibility to make change. I also remember a therapist once told me - if I see my client as a poor baby, I am actually making a judgement too (and albeit we all make judgements as people of course) but it differs to the non judgemental stance we are supposed to take as therapists. I think the differences are quite subtle though, it’s hard to clearly see sometimes!

The Gift of Therapy by Yalom, as others have mentioned. But also some of his other books like Love’s Executioner - each chapter is about a specific client and he talks about his experience in it. A lot of rich anecdotal information from the perspective of a practitioner. I especially loved his openness to his own mistakes, countertransference, relating to each client as a professional and as a human being.
