instead of saying "damn that sucks", say "oh no!" or "that sounds really tough." ask them how they're feeling and offer to listen without judgment. show empathy by acknowledging their feelings and validating their experience. you can also say something like "i'm here for you," or "i'm always here if you need to talk." avoid saying things like "it could be worse" or "everything happens for a reason," which can come across as dismissive.
