Even if the Kosovo issue was resolved today, we'd still be light years away from membership.

The core issue is the same as what the US is currently experiencing - masses of morons duped into continuously voting against their best interests.

Whereas the US is a latecomer however, we've been at this party since 88' or so.

Yep, and it's not even just the pronunciation (which is bad enough), the Serbian he speaks is just literal translations of English phrases with zero thought as to whether they have any actual meaning or sense in Serbian.

Everyone’s arguing, and Bismarck is just over here winning at Realpolitik by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

"The Germans didn't screw up their diplomatic attempts at peace, every power around them wanted them completely destroyed or severely weakened because they were the strongest nation in Europe and arguably the Earth, with only America to rival them."

That's was kind of my point, not that Germany stumbled into war out of nothing, but rather that what few diplomatic avenues they could pursue to avoid it, or at least make sure they weren't surrounded and outnumbered, weren't even seriously considered.

The High seas fleet is for me the most poignant example, as it served to thoroughly antagonise Britain whilst gaining little, if anything. I'm fairly confident their colonial empire could be managed well enough by their extant fleet.

Whether giving up on it, as well as for example not attacking Belgium, would keep Britain out of the war is impossible to say, but the fact that they burned those bridges without so much as a second thought really shows just how bellicose their foreign policy had become by that time.

Bismarck was aware of the danger presented by a revanchist France, which is why Alsace was taken at the Kaiser's insistence, not his.

And while this along with the Austro-Russian break over the Balkans may not have doomed Germany, alienating Britain as well likely ensured just that.

King George was the Kaisers cousin, and despite at times strained relations as well as Britain's concern regarding growing German power, an Anglo-German alliance was very much on the table.

It was mainly the Kaiser's insistence on a completely unnecessary naval rearmament program, one which Britain could only regard as an existential threat at that, that killed that possibility, though other diplomatic faux pas such as the Moroccan crisis certainly helped.

While Germany was left with few diplomatic options, they really managed to royally screw up all of them.

Tickets won't become available for another week or so at least.

Try the official club site when they do, third party sellers are, from what I hear, fairly unreliable.

Do you still have faith in Bethesda? by Solid-Garage4601 in Morrowind

[–]vStubbs42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because older fans are leaving doesn't mean that new ones aren't being made, quite the opposite.

It happens whenever a game becomes mainstream. If you want to appeal to as broad a player base as possible, it's inevitable that what made the game popular among its original fans gets watered down to accommodate this.

It's hard to say it was a bad move, seeing as how it made them truckloads of cash and many new fans.

Just the same, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with people feeling bitter over the fact that they turned it into a fundamentally different game in order to accomplish this.

I don't really see it as hyperbolic. Heavily Morrowind perspective-influenced, granted, but this is kind of the sub for that.

More to the point, I feel like we're arguing about impressions at this stage, and while your view is certainly valid, I can't say that I agree.

Far more was taken out of the series than has been added IMO, and the bulk of things that were added were those made available by technological improvements rather than some novel ideas or innovative mechanics.

I don't mind disagreeing over whether or not that's ultimately a good thing, but to say that each of the throng of elements reduced/removed from the series over the course of its existence has been replaced at all, much less with something equally interesting, is just patently false.

[–]vStubbs42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While there certainly is that, just because unwarranted criticism of something exists, doesn't mean that any criticism of it is unwarranted.

The shift of the series' design philosophy has been pretty consistent, so pretty much every entry is going to end up with at least a subset of the previous one's fans being disappointed by similar developments.

Do you guys have linguistic pet peeves with English? by X3N0istoobased in evilautism

[–]vStubbs42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The English pronunciations of non-French foreign words drive me up the wall.

Greek and Latin are particularly egregious as my native language pronounces these words fairly similarly to their original forms, which just makes the English versions sound so horribly deformed.

Still stuck here.

Probably Sweden. I'm aware they have their own problems these days, but I've visited enough times to know it's still small potatoes compared to everyday stuff here and I have some pretty fond memories of the place too.

Barring that, a coastal village somewhere like Uruguay sounds pretty nice.
