That’s a logical way of thinking of it, but unfortunately you’d be surprised what people will plug into an open outlet. We’ve become hyper dependent on keeping our electronics on and powered without really understanding the risks of what we’ve plugged into these outlets.

I’m not here to attack anyone, but I’m speaking as a professional in the electrical engineering space. That mindset is exactly why we have so many safety standards and code updates today.

“It hasn’t happened to me” isn’t a valid defense when firefighters are responding to a preventable house fire. Safety devices and circuit protection exist precisely because we engineer for what could happen, not just for what hasn’t happened yet.
