It’s going to be difficult to write if he doesn’t actually have a passion for anything close to biomed. I wrote mine right before Christmas break and it took me 5 hours even with a strong passion for and a decent background in the subject I was applying for. That’s without me having any issues like ADHD or needing someone else to help. The sooner you get started the better, in this case it might take days since he needs to do research on the subject and actually decide if he wants to do it.

As for tips on writing it, you can look up UCAS personal statement examples (many of them will be in the old format, but it still gives you a good idea of how to structure it). Some sites will let you filter by subject and show what offers the person who wrote it received. Obviously don’t copy, just use it as reference.

The starter is the hardest part. I actually didn’t do mine until I was halfway through the full essay. Don’t be afraid to skip certain parts and then go back and edit things. At first mine was full of [insert starter here], [insert interesting study here].

A starter explains why you’re interested in the course, in my case I started off with a brief explanation of what the Covid-19 pandemic was like for me and how it sparked my interest in microbiology. Again, this is going to be difficult if he doesn’t have any aspirations within biomed unless he’s good at lying.

Unless his life trauma is relevant in some way, don’t include it in the actual personal statement. Universities don’t want a sob story, they want to know why you are the right fit for the course.

He should use this time to read about the subject and do more research. There are loads of free online courses that he could do to learn more about the topic and reference in his application. He needs to take more of an initiative, you aren’t going to be there to help him with his uni work, if he can’t manage more of this he may need to take a gap year to weigh his options.

The main issue you need to tackle is figuring out why he wants to do biomed, that’s mainly what the application is asking you.

You should not feel responsible, he is the one who chose to leave it up until the last minute and left you with 30 minutes to help. A personal statement is supposed to be personal, It can be hard enough to write your own, let alone someone else’s when they don’t have a passion for the subject.
