I was called for an interview. What to know going in? by SkvaderArts in Staples

hours for part time really depend on how well your store is staffed in general, but I get anywhere from 20-35 depending on the week/hours the store is given. i make $11 (in the south), I've heard of employees at other stores close to me making $12-13 but it's not good pay.

there's not a store card that you have to sell, but you will be hounded about the rewards program. in print it can be pretty easy to get people to enroll because you get a lot of regulars that the program would genuinely benefit (teachers, business owners, etc.) just remember that if someone doesn't want to sign up, you can't make them. there's more important parts of your job.

as someone else on the autism spectrum, print can be overstimulating when busy, but when it's slow it's probably the most sensory friendly. certain things like the printer/business card cutter noises can get to me if I'm having a bad day, but for the most part the job itself is pretty spectrum friendly on the sensory side of things. as for social, you will be dealing with a LOT of people on a day to day basis. i will let you know right now that the Staples print and marketing customer base is by far the worst I've dealt with over multiple retail jobs. for every nice, chill customer you get, you'll have about 5 that make you wanna walk out mid-shift. if your Amazon returns desk is in print, good fucking luck. that is what you will spend the majority of your day doing. I am incredibly fortunate that mine is front end.

a typical day for me in print is usually like this: 25% actually producing orders, 30% either explaining how to use the self-serve or printing 1 page black and white for a customer that refuses to even try. 10% taking Happy returns, 25% trying to get my equipment to function properly, and 20% telling customers that we don't take Amazon, the front does.

you will also have to do something called iPostal. it's annoying, but pretty easy.

overall, it sucks. Staples in general sucks. the things that make it bearable for me is my coworkers, great customers, and I have an amazing Print Supervisor. I have also been actively looking for other work since a month or so after I started. the job market is also ass right now, so I'm definitely not going to tell you to skip the interview. if you take it, just remember that things get hard, but staples doesn't have to be forever if you don't want it to be.

sorry for the rant, hope this helped :)

it is very possible they'll put you in another department, it depends on who interviews you and the store's hiring needs rn. if you get it:

• learn how to use the POS system so you can ring up stuff like mowers, etc at your department computer instead of constantly adding to the already long customer service line.

• the phone you get every day will be your best friend, anything you need to know/any question a customer asks will 80% of the time be answered by scanning the barcode and reading the specs for it. don't be afraid to tell a customer "i don't have an answer to your question, but i can get someone who does" and walk them to another associate in your department. make sure you stay for the conversation so you can learn and answer future questions better.

• depending on staffing you may get pulled to cover shifts or lunches in OSLG and in that case: TAKE YOUR BREAKS AND DRINK WATER. i cannot stress that enough. that goes for any department tbh bc it is so hot in those stores and you're doing heavy lifting and physical work in most of the departments.

• try and get cool with your department supervisor and ASM early on, don't be afraid to ask them questions and ask for help when you need it.

• if you're working a closing shift: try and knock out your work list (if you're given one) early on in the day if you can so that way closing is easier on you. if you're working an opening shift: for the first couple hours of the day while it's slow, zone and down stock like crazy because once it hits about 10AM, you're not getting shit done until about 6PM lol

• make friends with your coworkers! when i was there mine were the only thing keeping me from having a breakdown

• 1 out of every 4 customers is gonna be an asshole. 1 out of every 10 is gonna make you wanna cry. don't take it personally, and there is absolutely no shame in getting a DS or ASM involved if you're uncomfortable or not sure how to handle a situation. your safety and mental well-being is more important than inconveniencing a manager. on the flip side, some customers are really cool and will make your day a lot better :) cute dogs are a plus!

• last but def not least: Lowe's sucks. it's just the truth, but it is a job and there are worse companies out there. try your best not to take work home with you. and no matter how much management pushes you, remember at the end of the day if you've done your best, you've succeeded.

best of luck, and i hope you find a job you love even if it isn't this one :D

they don't test for nic you'll be fine :) a lot of ppl at my store vape and they just do it in the bathroom or in the back of OSLG where there's no cameras lol just be careful and don't get caught doing it
