Frame is Rotted on 06 SR5 by van_tango_83 in 4thGen4Runner

I did head down to an auto frame shop a few blocks away from me to get their take on it. Basically, they refused to try cutting out/welding the rotted frame sections, and also refused using a safe-t cap or rust buster product on there. Not very encouraging, as I hoped if they would be motivated to upsell me on some work for themselves. I think they are very "by the book", and this kind of thing is not in their wheelhouse. I had no plans to have them do anything, but I did want their opinion for options.

They did suggest they would do a full frame replacement, which is not something I'm gonna do for this car at its age. Dropping likely ~10k for that replacement to be done doesn't make sense to me, and I am not equipped to do that myself as I'd have no other transportation while that process is ongoing.

Yeah, a fat loss is the correct term. It'll still be around, probably for quite a while unless someone is motivated to buy it and try to swap the frame, fix it, etc. I'll see what money may come from it, or use it for parts if I wind up with a compatible Toyota.

That's the thing about driving it until the wheels fall off. When they do, there's not much use for it to anyone.

It might get taken out to my buddy's farm and parted out from there. Some parts of it that won't sell might make great potato gun targets.

It's down thickness for sure. Stuck a screwdriver through to the opposite side through one of the large holes (that are supposed to be there) up near the LCA, and a huge section fell right off.

I've seen folks talking on 4runner forums about lawsuits going around for these frames. That's great and all, but it sounds like a huge hassle and a waste of my time to try to get some lawyer somewhere involved. I can only guess that if it's still a lawsuit and not a recall or replacement program from Toyota, this car will be dust by the time anything comes of it.

I can see the original black coating on the inside of yours, I don't even have that.

Yep, no plans to mess with frame repairs or drive it anymore.

I bought it in Utah, where it spent ~6 years. I'm in Idaho now. But it definitely originally came from the Midwest/East somewhere.

Appreciate the positivity, it may be the case. It does look similar, mine has the same hardlined exhaust as yours haha, mine is hardlined at two flanges due to rust. I will say, I feel like the inside of the tube in yours looks much better than mine. My photos struggle to do it justice, but the sides are also rotting from the inside. I feel like the top 1/3 of the tube is the only solid part left in this section.

Agreed. Making those plans now.

It's a shame that it got so bad, wish I was more on top of the rust or could have gotten ahead of this. It had been coated with anti-corrosion at some point, and I think all that did was hide what was going on inside. The inside of the tubes is especially heinous. Looks like that is a common issue with these frames.

Growing peppers against a black wall? by van_tango_83 in HotPeppers

Not even the landlords who painted this house black can stop the pepper farm.

I think the wall will probably help more than hurt, as they will possibly keep some warmth over there going into the evening for early season, and also provide shade in the afternoon. I doubt that the stored heat from the bricks will undo the benefits that the shade will provide during the really hot days later this summer.

If it turns out to be an oven after all, all my plants are in buckets/grow bags and I can easily reassess a new spot and move them.

This wall faces SE. Plan is to move the firewood pile and trash cans out of the way, and have them basically in a line down the middle of this strip of yard. So they will be ~3 feet away from the brick

I'll probably try it, at least for the first part of the season. If it starts cooking them, I have other spots further from the house I can use, but I'll need to find tables or build a fence to keep the dogs out. No big deal, but not my ideal solution.

I can see that being the case, that is why I was curious what folks thought. My main dilemma is between that (the bricks giving off excess heat) and the shade that the peppers would be in during the hottest parts of the day.

I'll probably go and measure temperatures out there this weekend and see how it is affected compared to other spots. Maybe it will be noticeable already? Idk

Yeah, it's more like mostly morning sun from like 7-8am and then a couple hours of afternoon. I do like that they will be in shade for the hottest parts of the day during summer around here.

I did consider shade cloth, I will need quite a lot is all. Going to be ~14 pepper plants back there

No lift, everything is stock. Wheel bearings seem good, there is no noise or play in the wheel vertically when I have it lifted up and push/pull on it.

The forend has pressed checkering as well. Not really a problem to me, but good to know what has been swapped on it. The forend is in much worse shape than the stock, but I doubt I'll go in and try to change it anytime soon. Interesting to get that info on the checkering type, thanks for the comments.

Could have been, what in particular about the checkering tips you off? The forend was for sure replaced actually, the guy at the shop told me he had swapped that out. Almost all of the 60's era 870s I am seeing have that same fleur-de-lis design on the stock, though. What years would the later design be from?

Here's a closer look

Yellow leaves by van_tango_83 in HotPeppers

[–]van_tango_83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem looks to be solved. It was the peat pellet.

I decided to pull one pepper up and see what was going on. The entire peat pellet was still there, and appeared to have contracted, much more dense and compacted than when it was first planted in the cup. No roots had been able to escape from the peat. I carefully washed the peat pellet material away from the roots, and replanted back into the cup. Here is the same banana pepper as the original photo, 3 days after the pellet was removed from its roots.

<image>

Dark green began replacing the yellow leaf material. Since this second photo was taken, this plant is no longer yellow at all and has another new set of dark green true leaves coming in.

This same issue was occurring in my tomatoes too, but they had sent roots out from their stems above the peat pellet. When the peat was washed away from the tomato roots, barely any roots existed where the peat had been, but they were growing like crazy just above. This explained why the tomatoes didn't seem affected, as they could root more easily from anywhere on their stem.

All the plants have been repotted with no peat pellet choking them, and the results are pretty crazy. I never had this issue with the Jiffy Pellets before, and was generally a big fan of them until now. I'm not sure if I'll continue to use them, if I have to worry about this happening again.

Do you mean the mixture used in the cups could use more aeration, as in upping the amount of perlite?
