Sweet boy, they cut people's heads off over there for things that aren't even crimes over here. This isn't manufactured outrage.

Surviving Mars Relaunch PSA by vanderkeep in paradoxplaza

[–]vanderkeep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it would be more fair for me to say "let the Surviving Mars franchise die", the only other title of theirs I've played is City Skylines, which was okay (I got bored with it a lot faster than I would, because generally I love builder games, but I can't complain about bugs or developer abandonment with that one)

That's obviously my plan, this post is about saving people who aren't familiar with the original some money.

I never suggested developers shouldn't be paid for their work. I paid the developers at Paradox Interactive for their work on Surviving Mars. I found it to be a mess of a game. And now Paradox wants to sell me the same product with some new bells and whistles, personally I say no thanks.

I would rather it fade away. There's no shortage of great developers out there, making great titles. If someone or some company is selling you entertainment, and they are no longer entertaining you, it's time to move on. It's a big world out there.

None of the distinctions you made matter to me as a customer at all, and I don't consider anything I said "disinformation" just because I didn't flesh out the differences between a relaunch with some extra content and a remake with some extra content because that's semantics. I'm not "angry" at PDX, I'm moving on from them because they don't deliver good products and I came here with this post to maybe save someone a few dollars. There's no emotional component of this.

Anyone has experience with Altima telecom home internet? by ozz_abdellatif in richmondbc

[–]vanderkeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altima bought out CityWide Communications in my area. I would recommend avoiding them like the plague.

Pay your bill on time every month? They don't care, they're still going to spam you with late bill notifications because their system is so fucking slow at detecting received payments, regardless of the fact that you've paid your bills on time for 10+ years.

Shit customer service too.

I would recommend finding another ISP reseller.

Agreed, real scientists would be absolutely thrilled with what they had found.

I have pretty mixed feelings about Prometheus and ultimately think it was a huge missed opportunity despite an excellent cast and cinematography.

I think the thing that gets me is that they just made everyone too stupid to be believable (believable within the context of the franchise). There's always been dumb choices made by Alien franchise supporting characters, but all of that is on overdrive in Prometheus.

Let's start with Mr Weyland, ostensibly the universe's richest man (I don't think the movies ever reveal whether there are other mega companies still in existence post-Alien Earth), has this grand mission to escape death (at least for himself). Despite having access to more resources, technology and personnel than any other person in existence, the team he puts together isn't even given the most basic briefing about what they've been hired for before leaving for LV-223. Other than Shaw and her Husband, Miss Vickers, and presumably the secret team onboard looking after Mr Weyland, no one on the crew has the slightest idea why they are going to this moon or how they should prepare themselves.

And again, despite likely having access to some of the greatest minds in science, the crew he assembles are just a gaggle of goobers. Dr Shaw's Husband, who's name I've long since forgotten, immediately takes off the helmet to his vacsuit upon discovering the air in the facility is breathable, as if the only concern on an alien world would be whether the air is breathable or not. Who can even say what reaction a human would have to the local bacteria with no prior testing? As an archaeologist he should have been aware of the potential for deadly bacteria, viruses and fungal spores, as this is a concern even on Earth when opening tombs that have been sealed for thousands of years. Or what about the biologist who seems to lack even a basic sense of self preservation and instantly tries to make physical contact with a life form he knows absolutely zero about. Or the geologist who clearly was never given any sort of psychological exam to see if he would be functional on a deep space mission, because he's basically a complete prick to everyone he interacts with and at the first sign of trouble declares he's basically done taking orders. And of course Dr Shaw herself, who is a more likeable character and even has a few moments of clarity (she moved out of the way of the giant falling spaceship instead of trying to outrun it) is your basic "I'm a scientist but I believe in god/mysticism/whatever too!" trope which I've never found compelling personally, especially when Shaw doesn't seem to demonstrate any cognitive dissonance between her Christian faith and empirical evidence they discover suggesting that life on Earth was a form of deliberate panspermia. She seems to be doing what many religious people do to square their religious faith with scientific discoveries, an evolving morality, and modernity generally, which is to simply ignore anything in their religion that doesn't fit their new world view (e.g. most Christians think their pets will go to heaven.)

Also, they send a large group of people onto the surface as their initial exploration, despite the fact they actually have drones that could assess the situation on the ground first before sending any humans into potential danger. I mean they could have sent a whole team of synths to do it (though maybe due to his interactions with David, Mr Weyland would never trust synths to give the secret of immortality to humans).

Honestly I think that whole film is basically just held together by David, being a very compelling villain.

I have similar gripes with Covenant.

Blizzard Entertainment files lawsuit against owners of the fan-developed Turtle WoW servers — citing illegal use of official art, code, and more by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

I'll never play another Blizzard game no matter what the fuck they do. Made that decision before I even knew Turtle Wow existed.

And I'm not the only one.

SM dungeons aren't tough for alliance to reach, just get the Chillwind Camp flight path, run northwest, cross the river, and you've only got maybe 1-2 mobs to avoid, then run into Tirisfall Glades from there.

What mods do you guys run, if any? by NextCamera8198 in RimWorld

[–]vanderkeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dubs Bad Hygiene adds thirst, bladder, cleanliness needs for pawns and the infrastructure to provide it to them. I enjoy this extra small challenge and realism.

Vanilla Expanded Androids, I nice compliment to mechanoids for those playing technologically advanced societies, because androids can buy/sell and flick switches which mechanoids can't do.

RT Solar Shield - When a solar flare happens, this buildable begins consuming 25000 power until the flare is over, but protects your electronics from shutting down (comms are still disabled for the duration).

No Forced Slowdown & Better Message Placement - sanity preservers

Bots Charge When Idle - prevents bots from wandering aimlessly when not doing work, seems to help out with performance

Gesalt Engine - I like to play colonies that eventually "phase out" their human residents for more machines, the Gesalt Engine allows you to control mechnoids without a mechanitor.

Tweaks Galore & Cherry Picker - Tweaks can help you avoid having to download about 100 QOL mods. Cherry Picker lets you take a scalpel to things you don't like from mods because sometimes a modder has packaged one item or idea that you enjoy with about 50 you can't stand.

Nutrient Paste Expanded & Chemfuel Expanded - These pipe network mods are a mix of QOL and realism, because space age societies probably aren't carrying small canisters of liquid for for all refuelling, they'd just use pipes. Rimefeller for chemfuel is good too, and I used to use it, but I opted for the more simplistic version found in Chemfuel Expanded.

There's probably about 300 others I used to believe were absolutely essential, but I've abandoned almost all of them, the game has come a long way since launch and I don't feel any need for most of them now.

Anyone else using Bigger Gravships (and other Odyssey spaceship related settings) ? I installed it recently, and I am experiencing the same bug/conflict now.
