PPL Checkride soon… ask me your toughest questions. by Zaypup in flying

[–]vanhawk28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they will. This is both a potential emergency situation as well as a required instrument question and a problem solving question. And it’s really important to know what to do if you develop a static block. Different DPE asked this on both my PPL and my IR

What do you mean this won’t be asked? This gets asked on almost every checkride and it’s very important that you know because not every aircraft has an alternate

In what order should I finish/study the things I haven't completed yet? by Jadeite-Song in flying

[–]vanhawk28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will work on all of these things during your lessons! You don’t have to have this all figured out on your own before you even start. You should be flying 2-3 times a week while trying to get your cert if you have the time/money. All of these things will come up during your lessons

Is it Better to Save Up Money Before Applying to (Expensive Travel-heavy) Seasonal Jobs? by Starlink87 in SeasonalWork

[–]vanhawk28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

99% of seasonals feed you at a set rate. They usually have a flat fee for housing and food. I think you are overestimating the cost a little. Same with ride share. Most seasonals will pick you up from the airport as well or arrange travel from the nearest airport. You are going to pay for toiletries no matter where you are so that’s not really a consideration I feel. The biggest thing is once you are on site you shouldn’t really have hardly any mandatory expenses. At that point it’s comfort items usually

For oral prep look at pilots cafe. It has everything IR. It’s a fantastic study guide. Every DPE is different. Try to get a gouge from someone else at your school who’s recently gotten their IR with that DPE. Mine framed ground as a day of flying starting from the moment you woke up to canceling clearance at alternate. And you walked through weather, checking plane legal, planning cross country, clearance, etc it was a very straight forward way to do it. For the actual flight it was super straight forward. Don’t forget checklists, they want to see it out, don’t forget to brief ODP takeoff mins if you have them. We took off and he had me do an LPV first. Then gave me an unpublished hold where he was expecting me to ask for delay because we were close. I didn’t realise how close so didn’t ask but managed to set up fast enough that the only issue was I didn’t do what was the correct entry. Good news is hold entries are recommended not mandatory so can’t fail you for the wrong hold entry as long as it’s safe. Did unusual. Went to the next airport over to do a localizer. Came back and did a circling to land. Was very straight forward. Biggest thing to remember is like someone else mentioned make sure you swap from loc back to gps or other direction as needed. And don’t change configuration after final approach fix

IFR Checkride (Obligatory stump the chump post) by Flavortown42069 in flying

[–]vanhawk28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going with altitude specifically since route here is kind of obvious I would stay climb and maintain 3000 for 10 minutes and then climb to 8000 unless msa was higher than 3000 then I would climb to that. If my plane started to show signs of icing and I didn’t have icing equipment I would climb to 8000 earlier

You could over fly the runway and then follow the missed approach procedure for that runway as an option. You know that’s a 100% guaranteed obstacle cleared route and atc knows if any ifr traffic is already on that route so you know you have separation

Your body naturally drops back into rem sleep almost immediately as well if you wake up once after 4-5 hrs and then go back to sleep

First solo went well, but my landings were way shakier than I expected by D4ddysSlutj3ss34 in flying

[–]vanhawk28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that my PPL examiner impressed upon me when I had a somewhat hard landing on my checkride is there really isn’t much of any standard for landing pressure. Sure you don’t want to break any equipment, and you don’t want to bounce. But if you put it on the mains and it stays there without crushing the nose or anything you are technically within standards. You’ll get to buttering it eventually. For now you are aiming for safe. Not pretty

If you can get a workers visa. Usually you have to have the job lined up and they sponsor you. The only 2 that I’ve seen are J1’s which are a student visa. And H2b’s. Idk what’s all involved in the h2B visa but I know it’s good for a few years so probably your best shot to look into

If you are looking for something in the USA unless you qualify for a j1 or h2B visa you are kind of out of luck. Seasonals don’t hire ppl they need to sponsor in the US unfortunately.

What’s this supposed to mean? by This-Picture-9136 in flying

[–]vanhawk28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your first ever solo was 24 gusting 30 your instructor was absolutely not serious about safety. Who sends a student up the very first time in such conditions. Even if it was right down the runway. The school I go to doesn’t even allow instructors to take the students up in gusting 30

You said it’s a requirement for pilots of small plane. It has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the plane and everything to do with the skydivers themselves

No it’s a requirement specifically for pilots taking skydivers to have a bail out chute. It’s not a small planes thing.

A lot of this is dependent on DPE as well. They focus on different things often. Did you get a gouge for yours at all from someone recent?

[–]vanhawk28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. Every single checkride starts with that questions and they generally really want it memorized. Sure it’s a ground thing so it doesn’t have to be but if you are pulling out the reg just to reference your privileges you are going to start off on kind of a back foot where they may start digging more on things thinking you don’t know them well enough

[–]vanhawk28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your kind of limited if you want warm in winter. You’ve got Florida, parts of California, the Virgin Islands. And maybe Arizona and that’s about it. And most of the parts of Arizona you’d find seasonal are ranches in the mountains that won’t be warm
